as i prepare to lead my costa rica yoga +
creativity retreat this weekend, i am keenly aware of the blessing of
creativity. creativity has been a passion of mine ever since i read the
artist’s way and realized that even i was creative. life has never been the
same, and i’ve been on a mission ever since to help others recognize their
innate creative juiciness.
i find the practice of yoga and the play of creativity to be what sustain me.
below are a few ideas for carving out your own yoga + creativity journey at
home:
1. collage. peruse your magazines and tear out images, quotes, or words
that appeal to you. begin arranging your pieces onto construction paper, and
glue them down when you’re happy with what you see. think of this collage as a
visual map of your ideal – a treasure map. reflect on ways you can bring more of
what you created visually into your daily life. tools needed: at least
five glossy magazines, scissors, glue, construction paper, and childlike play.
2. plant (or repot) something. get your hands dirty. even if you don’t
have space beyond a tiny windowsill, buy seeds, small terra cotta pots (that can
be painted in vibrant colors), and soil. as the little seedling pushes through
the soil, you will be reminded of your own growth process. the struggle from
idea (seed) to blossom (dream realized) is a very delicate journey that needs
constant attention.
take notice when your plants have outgrown their pots and need repotting.
keeping a plant in a pot past its prime can have devastating consequences.
similar to your own experience, when you’ve outgrown a job, relationship, or
situation, it is best to move on or you may be squelching your soul.
3. create a new yoga sequence. rather than pulling out the same dvd or cd
you always use or moving through memorized sequences such as surya namaskar a
and b, make up your own flow. play with starting in savasana or legs up the
wall. take it to pigeon and keep playing. the beauty of vinyasa is that it
embodies a creative spirit. let your body dance in and out of poses. write down
what worked or didn’t work. voila, you’ve now created your very own vinyasa.
4. do something differently. rather than simply doing something new, do
something you always do differently. instead of sipping chamomile tea, try
sipping jasmine. instead of responding to e-mails as soon as they come in, check
a few times a day and respond in chunks. instead of taking power yoga, indulge
in yin yoga. by making small changes to what is already part of your routine,
you can insert a creative excursion with minimal effort and interruption to your
lifestyle.
omwork (homework with a yogic twist): listen to a different genre of
music. stay up very late or get up way early. make up a new-to-you yoga
sequence. choose bubbly over bland. sign up for a crash course in sewing,
knitting, hip hop, soap making, or public speaking. go on a hike. gaze at the
stars. take a brisk 20-minute walk. play with ladybugs. savor your grape soda
slowly. slurp the whipped cream off your hot cocoa. take a mini-vacation with
journal, sketchbook, or camera in hand to your local park, museum, or botanical
gardens.
i hope these simple tips help to fuel your creative fire this fall. namaste.
creatively
yours,

it has been a busy yet exciting time for me as
i finish my 500 hour teacher training with shiva rea in prana vinyasa flow. i
recently returned from spending 10 days at kripalu where i assisted shiva rea.
it is amazing how much you can learn about yoga and yourself when you immerse
yourself in an amazing yoga community, a community who totally lives outside the
box and embraces the dynamic diversity of each individual. that environment
allows people to see their own amazing beauty and take that into the world and
shine.
my journey has lead me to new exciting adventures: a gathering around
international peace day called the global mala. as part of this celebration yoga
communities around the world are collaborating to contribute the the intention
of peace.
on september 22nd at city dance in dupont, i and two other members of the dc
yoga community will be holding a yoga trance dance. on the 23rd at the marvin
center we will be holding dc's first global mala where we will be doing 108
surya namaskara's in rounds of 27, a day of meditation, chanting, dharma
discussions, kirtan, and drumming.
another exciting adventure has been the
creation of a yoga calendar in which 5 other yogis and i have gotten together to
donate our time and energy to create a yoga calendar. all of the proceeds from
the calendar will be donated to trees for the future.
i look forward to the next adventure and to discovering where the journey takes
me.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
natarajasana
(dancer pose)
benefits
- stretches the shoulders and chest
- stretches the thighs, groins, and abdomen
- strengthens the legs and ankles
- improves balance

i've thought about trying yoga off and on for
years. tried gym-type classes, but didn't really like them. after getting past
some health issues recently, i decided to try yoga again. but where? i knew i
needed to find someplace close to work, or wouldn't be consistent. so, i googled
vinyasa yoga and dc, and found tranquil space!
i took the newbie yoga workshop in february, and the rest, as they say, is
history! i’ve experienced numerous changes in body, mind, and spirit since i’ve
started practicing. i’m slowly becoming more flexible, i feel more focused, and
definitely feel more centered. the things i appreciate most about tranquil space
is the community spirit and the joyfulness of accepting where you are at the
moment that is infused in the classes. i really came to appreciate this concept
when i took a class while on a business trip a couple months ago.
the instructor had just given me a nice correction in a revolved balancing-type
pose, from which i proceeded to extend just a little bit too far beyond my edge.
i fell out of the pose with a slightly less than graceful “clunk,” and i just
started to chuckle…had a big smile on my face…it was highly amusing! after
assuring the instructor that it was not her correction, but my over extension
that led me to fall out of the pose, i could feel the somewhat uncomfortable
intensity of her concerned eyes watching me the rest of class. that’s when i
realized the sense of joyfulness and fun that i felt, even when falling out of a
pose, came from being at tranquil space.
i'm thankful to the instructors and everyone a tranquil space for introducing me
to and sharing with me the challenges and joys of yoga. i learn something each
time i'm on the mat, and that's an amazing gift.

i joined the tranquiliteam under the encouragement of the
fabulous kelly tobin. i had become a regular yogi at tranquil space after
practicing on and off without finding the right fit anywhere else. i hesitated
because i thought the time commitment might overwhelm my already busy schedule,
but i have not regretted joining the team for a minute. rather than overwhelming
me, i've found that being part of such a dynamic and supportive team has
enhanced my life and practice immensely. i feel at home at
tranquil space, both on my mat and behind the desk. i love my role as manager
sub because i constantly have the opportunity to meet new team members and new
yogis. i feel lucky and honored to be a member of such a creative, loving, and
crazy team!
