living your practice: yoga philosophy in your daily life
For many students, yoga is much more than an exercise that is practiced a few times per week; it is a way of life. In this evening workshop with Darren Main, we will be covering many of the principles that guide a yogic lifestyle.
Rather than focus on yoga poses and breathing, we will devote our attention to the rich philosophy that yogis try to live by. The evening will include chanting, a meditation, a talk on yogic principles and time for group discussion.
- Learn about Yogic Philosophy
- Understand Why Yoga Works
- Explore the Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutra and The Upanishads
- Find Ways to Bring Yoga off the Mat and into the Rest of Life
- Learn the Art of Seated Meditation
- Deepen Your Asana Practice
the eight limbs: taking your yoga to the next level
While most styles of yoga focus on the poses (third limb) and the breathing (fourth limb), there are many other aspects of yoga. In The Yoga Sutras, Patanjali outlined eight limbs. By learning to work these other limbs into their practice, students of yoga can take their practice to the next level. In this workshop with Darren Main poses and breathing are used as a foundation for the latter limbs. By holding poses for longer periods of time, students will have the opportunity to explore the other limbs and to see how they apply to the whole of their practice, as well as to life itself.
- Discover the Rich Psychology of Yoga
- Use Poses as a Transformational Tool
- Explore the Inward Nature of Yoga
- Move Beyond Pre-conceived Limits
- Release Old Patterns (Samskaras)
- Learn to Listen to the Inner-Teacher
- Understand Yoga as a Mystical Path
- Complement Psychotherapy
- Explore The Yoga Sutra

asana of the month

yogi of the month
jennette swartout
I came to Tranquil Space in the winter of 2001, after having just moved to Washington, D.C. That winter, after three years of road-warrior consulting and two cross-country relocations, I was seeking relief from a lifestyle that had left me feeling spiritually rootless and physically exhausted. One of my first steps towards creating the life that I wanted was to begin taking yoga classes again. Tranquil Space quickly became a place and a community that I felt connected to, and yoga became much more than just a form of exercise. Yoga brings me a sense of peace and empowerment into my daily life that I really need, and, even in the busiest of days, it helps me to honor my own priorities and keep a sense of perspective that is otherwise buried under paperwork, client meetings and travel schedules.
Thanks to a deepening practice, I feel that I have grown tremendously in this last year and a half- both on and off the mat. But I have also seen Tranquil Space grow; in the number of students, the number and variety of classes, and the number of wonderful teachers at the studio. This growth is a testament to staff's creativity, dedication and vision. The expansion of the yoga 2 and 3 classes shows that as students we are growing right along with Tranquil Space. I'm excited to be a part of this community, and grateful to share my practice with all of you.

Okay, I'll admit it...a little over a year ago, I was a bit of a naysayer. I thought yoga sounded like a good idea for others, but that I really didn't have time to add it to my own workouts.
When I began experimentally taking classes that Kimberly taught at my workplace, though, all this changed. I quickly realized how well the strength, balance, and flexibility I gained from a regular yoga practice complemented my other activities.
These days, I'm extremely glad that I've found Tranquil Space, and I'm thankful that I can use my own skills to help out and give back to the studio.

reflective closing thoughts

|
"In the right view both of life and of yoga, all life is either consciously or subconsciously yoga."
~ Sri Aurobindo
|
|
I am continually amazed by the varied perceptions of what it means to be a yogi. How can it be so easy for Westerners to practice hatha yoga regularly and still not understand the vastness of the practice? I struggle with this regularly as my focus is not necessarily in only studying the ancient spiritual texts, yearning to spend time in an ashram or even learning sanskrit. Has yoga become too Westernized? I believe that the practice should work for people of today however they choose to use it. One may find that an initial intention of toning the body quickly evolves into a desire to learn more about themselves, to take more chances in life, and enjoy a new sense of empowerment. That is the true power of yoga.
The practice is continually evolving for the typical yogi and the needs or intentions of approaching the mat each time varies. How can this be wrong? We are always at new crossroads in our busy, stress-filled lives and I'm grateful for the relief that yoga provides many Washingtonians. I encourage each one of you to determine what the practice means to you, how it has assisted your life journey and to never berate yourself for not being good enough, not knowing enough or not getting a certain pose. The power of yoga is so much deeper and so individual. In the approaching crisp months, why not consciously contemplate your yoga practice when you set your intention or dedication at the beginning of the practice and enjoy all the benefits that yoga brings on the various levels? All of life can be your yoga practice and carrying the strength, flexibility, courage and sense of power off of the mat into your life can have profound results.
Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
