“10 principles of enlightened business: enhance the well-being of others, respect your financial commitments, act with absolute equanimity, convey true impressions, bring people together, speak professionally and respectfully, speak about meaningful things, find happiness in what you have, celebrate others' achievements, see the hidden potential of all things.”
~ geshe michael roach, author of the diamond cutter
when my managing director, gina davis, called exclaiming that we'd received a letter from the washington post announcing that tranquil space had been voted best yoga studio, i was elated. this was the first year that this category was listed, and i was delighted to see yoga recognized as such an important part of dc's community. the letter stated that this award placed tranquil space within the top 50 businesses in dc, truly an honor for a business that began in a living room less than six years ago. i can't emphasize enough how lucky i feel to be surrounded by such an amazing community of students, teachers, managers, consultants all the special members of the tranquiliTeam.
we strive to make every detail enhance this experience sounds, smells, touches, colors, comfort, encouragement, challenge, and creativity. each of you have contributed exponentially to this experience from attending classes in my living room to a church parlor to p street, teaching students, picking up the supplies and treats, assisting in classes, supporting our workshops, mingling off the mat at our community events, keeping the studio in order, expanding tranquil space to bethesda and penn quarter, offering top-notch tranquiliT treatments to our students, creating specialty programs such as newbie, pre- and post-natal, helping spread the word about tranquil space, merchandising to help keep the sign-in area fresh, and sitting on the visionary team or advisory board. i could go on and on! the students and team attracted to tranquil space are truly unique and gifted.
considering my degrees are in psychology and women's studies, the operating of a business has been a "learn as you go" experience. i've realized that it truly is about initiative, and a strong desire to build something that serves a community outside of myself. that's what had me passionate about working 17-hour days designing teacher training, updating the website, developing the creativity circle, conceptualizing the tranquiliT line, researching retreat ideas, writing the newsletters, and all the details that go into the creation of a business at the beginning. now i find a 14-hour day to be a bit too long, and am constantly working to squeeze in that self-care time that i so believe in. a pedicure, yoga practice, massage, reading time, and a good nap sure go a long way.
among 15 other books by my bedside, i'm reading this great one called the diamond cutter: the buddha on managing your business and your life, about a buddhist monk who built a large diamond operation from nothing using ancient wisdom of buddhism. he shares that westerners sometimes equate being in business with being out of sync with trying to lead a spiritual life. i recall walking into an independent bookstore out west earlier this year, and asking where their business section was (my fave section after self-help!). the front desk person grimaced as he replied that they didn't carry those books. he must have forgotten that he was working in a business that was bringing a great service to his community, and that also assisted with his ability to sustain his way of life. the author goes on to share how a person with greater resources can do much more good in the world than one without, and that doing business is about creating meaning. he also wrote that the goal of business, and of ancient tibetan wisdom, is to enrich ourselves, and to achieve prosperity inside and out. one of my favorite points that the author makes is that it is important never to lose a generous outlook or to lose creativity surrounding challenges, reiterating the notion that we create what we focus on.
as i continue to strive to create a sustainable business that is enlightened, i want to thank you for supporting tranquil space along the way. some of you have grown with us since my living room and it has been a true treat to have you along for this journey. thank you for assisting with its growth into a true lifestyle-focused studio where we seek to enhance washingtonians' way of life. i hope that tranquil space continues to help you sprinkle touches of tranquility into your everyday urban life. join us for a charity community event, a yoga class, a specialty workshop, a massage, or a browse in the tranquiliT boutique your tranquil space awaits you.
gratefully yours,
kimberly wilson

after completing my teacher training just over a year ago, i have relished where the yoga path has taken me. i have grown to appreciate that there is something very special about yoga, and that is the yoga community. in the past, i have walked down the street with many strangers and felt a sense of disconnection. however, now, as my practice in yoga has matured, i feel a connection a great connection with all things around me. the yoga community creates that feeling of belonging, of home, of connection which is rare to find in many settings. yoga brings strangers together in community, and there is commonality without regard to someone's past or future; the focus is on the present moment.
a knee injury was the turning point for me. as darren john main so eloquently said, "for many of us, it is an aching body or stressed out mind that brings us to the mat. this can seem like a bad thing in the beginning, but it is a cleverly hidden gift. whatever it is that gets us to the practice of yoga, it is only the excuse that spirit uses to get us stared on the path." so it was for me.
to me, the gift of yoga is all about connection with self, and extending that to the external world. it is about connecting the flow of breath, movement, and spirit. also, letting go of the mind and the craziness of the world for short periods of time to receive a gift from the practice; a gift that i can learn from and take into the world.
my classes and students remind me of how fun and challenging life and community can be. sometimes, the excitement comes from a reading that has special meaning that challenges my thinking. at other times, it may be experimenting with a new pose where i must make a special effort to learn where i have to laugh at myself because of those clumsy initial attempts. and, regardless of whether the challenge results from a provocative new thought or a challenging pose, i always remember that this is about the journey, and celebrating through it all!
my most valued learning is always to come from the heart. i have found that when i am true to myself, that my intentions reflect through to the class i am teaching and to the life i live.

david hennage tranquil space dupont
my yoga practice started five years ago at an ashtanga studio as an attempt to stay in shape as i got older. a little over a year ago i started to drop in to tranquil space because it is conveniently located between my house and my work.
soon i became committed to the tranquil space vinyasa style, where each class is a different work of art created by the teacher and the students. kimberly has attracted a staff that is dedicated, competent, and caring. the students and the ambiance reflect kimberly's and the staffs' qualities. although i am a bit of an outlier among the students, as an over-60 male, i always felt completely accepted and supported in my practice by the teachers and my classmates.
because i am a practicing meditator, i am attracted to the spiritual underpinning of yoga and find the weekly spiritual themes at tranquil space, and the opening and closing rituals, an important part of my practice. travel is my middle name, and i have been to yoga studios all over the world, but i consider tranquil space my home for my yoga practice. i have deepened my practice by taking teacher training and many workshops at tranquil space. i plan to teach when i retire in about a year. i am looking forward to working with kimberly and lisa who are leading a yoga retreat to my wife's and my caribbean retreat center this coming february.
for me, tranquil space is just that a tranquil space in the in chaos of my life. |
andrea abrams creel tranquil space bethesda
i began taking yoga classes in 1999 as part of a summer theatre workshop. after taking my first class, i realized that yoga helped me to be more grounded and focused as an actor, decreased the stress and anxiety i experienced, and increased my flexibility and strength. most importantly, yoga was fun!
in the past six years, yoga has become such an integral part of my life that i can't imagine my life without it. the more i practice yoga, the more i realize the subtle ways the yogic principles create change in my life and my outlook. yoga has helped me to look inside of myself for wisdom instead of relying on others. when i am on the yoga mat, i get an internal sense of validation and gain an awareness of my body that cannot be found by gazing in a mirror or looking to others for approval. reminding myself to stay in the present moment allows me to be happy with where i am instead of comparing myself to others or to my past or future selves.
in january 2005 i discovered tranquil space bethesda, and after taking one of siobhan's challenging and exciting classes, i was hooked. in april i completed the level 1 teacher training in bethesda. since discovering tranquil space bethesda my practice has grown deeper and my arms have grown stronger (i guess all those chaturangas are good for something after all!). i love the way siobhan challenges you to go deeper while still encouraging you to accept where you are in the pose. siobhan has taught me that all of life's problems can be answered by simply engaging uddiyana bandha. my bookshelf and cd collection have expanded as well, since whenever i hear a reading i like or a song i enjoy, i run out and buy it.
i am now embarking on my journey of becoming a yoga teacher. the guidance and inspiration i have received from siobhan, anne, and carol have given me the skills and confidence to prepare me for this new adventure in life. thank you, tranquil space, for giving me the courage to follow my bliss.

i have been a dancer all my life and have found great joy in learning and performing . . . but in the past few years, my lessons in classical ballet and jazz where no longer fulfilling in the ways they once had been. i could feel that my body craved a style movement and level of challenge that was new and exciting. about two years ago, while living in chicago, i tried ashtanga yoga because i had heard it was an invigorating and difficult practice. this piqued my interest, and over the following months, i tried several studios, teachers, and other styles.
i moved to dc in august '04 to begin a ph.d. program in clinical psychology at american university. i left many friends behind in chicago, and my boyfriend headed off to france for a year. i knew i was in for a year full of transitions, and that i would benefit greatly from a regular practice. i made it my number one priority to nurture my mind and body and i promised myself that i would not to get swallowed by the stress and pressures of my academic undertakings . . . which brings me to tranquil space.
after my first class i was hooked. a month or so later i "floated" into yoga 3. my body felt reenergized, challenged, and full of life. i was finding more peace with myself every time i came to class, and naturally i wanted to take as many classes as possible. in the winter i began working as a studio assistant, cleaning the studios in exchange for classes. it was not the most glorious position, but because i was earning free classes, it allowed me to deepen my practice, and for this, i am extremely grateful. now, although i have given up scrubbing toilets, you can still find me working in the boutique with gina . . . or in class several times a week. i believe tranquil space provides its students and employees with a whole experience it engages every part of the person, not just the yogi, in each of us. everyone in the tranquil space community seems to be compassionate and dedicated, working toward cultivating greater peace. i feel lucky to be a part of this amazing group, and especially honored to be selected as the team player of the month. namaste.
