a dream. the oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits

welcome to october at tranquil space. a lovely chill
is in the air, leaves are beginning to fall, and we’re
celebrating our 9th year of serving tranquility to
washingtonians. as we honor our 9th year, i wanted to
share a brief history of our journey:
1999: classes were launched in my 4th floor walk
up at 16th and u by hanging fliers around the
neighborhood
2000: outgrew the living room and moved to a
church parlor at 16th and q
2001: began selling tranquil space tees and
donating percentages to our first charity, my sister’s
place
2002: launched our teacher training level 1
program and the TranquiliT line which debuted at a
fundraiser we held for the rape crisis center
2003: launched our 200-hr teacher training
program and moved to a 2-level space on p street
2004: tranquil space bethesda was born
2005: voted dc’s best yoga studio by washington
post readers, began hosting annual doga events to raise
awareness for the humane society, and TranquiliT went
green with fabrics for the line
2006: launched our own non-profit, tranquil space
foundation, and released my first book, hip tranquil
chick
2007: named among the top 25 yoga studios in the
world by travel + leisure and launched tranquil space
arlington
2008: moved into our new 3-level home on 17th
street and began planting trees for every class pass
purchased
this past weekend we had our annual team retreat where
our team from our three locations came together. we
divided into groups based on our five studio values:
creativity, compassion, passion, community, and
initiative, and had a guest speaker from lululemon (one
of my most respected companies) come in to share some
inspiring fodder. next we worked on our 1, 5, and
10-year goals for ourselves and the studio, received
studio updates, did pranayam and practiced meditation,
and had a fashion show featuring fall eco-friendly
TranquiliT.
seeing the team together in this capacity each year
means so much to me. the group is dynamic, incredibly
talented, and so supportive of one another. one of the
nicest compliments we receive from within and outside
the studio is how special our community truly is. when i
started the studio (a tiny seedling of what we are now),
i wanted a space where people would feel catered to,
acknowledged and appreciated. think norm from the tv
show cheers minus the drink. washingtonians are very
busy and deserve a space where they can surrender their
blackberries, turn within, and get served tea and
cookies.
thank you for your continued trust along this journey.
many yogis have moved, returned to dc, had babies,
gotten married, had more babies, switched jobs, and
returned to tranquil space. we continue to do all we can
to offer you a well-rounded lifestyle experience through
our classes, workshops, retreats, spa, boutique, and tea
bar. again, i thank you from the bottom of my heart for
your support over the years and especially to my amazing
team who ensures tranquility is served with all our
special touches.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson, creative director + founder

i think yoga and i found each other at the perfect moment.
soon after i moved to DC, i discovered tranquil space and have been part of the
wonderful yoga community surrounding the studio ever since. there have been many
wonderful changes in my life since i took my first class, but yoga has been a
constant presence, a touchstone i can always rely on.
i love the feeling of stepping into a yoga studio, knowing that i am about to
experience complete presentness. yoga makes me feel alive in the most
comprehensive sense. i am fully aware of my body, conscious of my breath, calm
yet stimulated in my mind and all three are working in union. even when i am
tired, my muscles are tight, or my breath is stuck, I am conscious and so it is
all ok. in my practice i am able to peel back some layers and connect with my
truest self.
embarking on the path of a teach has been a real adventure. this is not just a
normal job, but an opportunity to guide others on their yogic paths. even one
class can drastically alter our present and future lives if it moves us further
on our journeys. i love seeing my students try new poses, fail, then smile and
get right back on the mat. i love seeing their elation after succeeding at their
first head stand. i love connecting with them, after all the effort and asanas
are complete, over some tea and cookies.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
hanumanasana
(monkey pose or full split):
hanu=chin
hanuman= one with a jaw
hanuman was a famous, mythical monkey chief in the
timeless sanskrit epic ramayana:
"it was the greatest leap ever taken. the speed of hanuman's jump pulled
blossoms and flowers into the air after him and they fell like little stars on
the waving treetops. the animals on the beach had never seen such a thing; they
cheered hanuman, then the air burned from his passage, and red clouds flamed
over the sky…." (excerpted from the ramayana, as retold by william buck and
quoted in yogajournal.com).
this asana is dedicated to lord hanuman, the powerful monkey chief, and
commemorates his famous leap from the southern tip of india to the lankan
islands (believed to be the present-day sri lanka).
benefits:
- stretches the thighs, hamstrings, groins
- stimulates the abdominal organs
- may have therapeutic applications for sciatica
- helps cultivate patience, discipline, and reverence
cautions/contraindications:
may be contraindicated for individuals with groin or hamstring injuries
preparatory poses:
- baddha konasana
- janu sirsasana
- paschimottanasana
- prasarita padottanasana
- supta virasana
- supta padangustasana
- upavistha konasana
- uttanasana
song that most comes to mind while in the posture:
john cougar mellencamp ― "hurts so good"

how much space will "they" give me to
meander……..?
i wrestled with the dilemma of "does a woman's body have to look like this"? a
long wrestling match.
i have exercised since in my late teens. aerobics; weights; dancing; running;
etc.
i loved exercising but there was not much change in my body. or my angst.
then i remembered a famous movie star who was near my age and she 'swore' that
to look healthy and beautiful a woman needed three things… good genes, peace of
mind & YOGA.
then one lucky day i wandered into tranquil space on p street. my first thought
was YEAH. not that cold, high tech décor most of DC adores in yoga studios. my
next thought was ooh ooh… a cross between bohemian, hippie and girly. yikes!
then i met the teachers, the staff, the KIMBERLY. love at first sight. and my
heart has remained true. and so has kimberly, the staff and the studio. the new
beautiful studio space has kept its promise.
and my body WAS NOT DOOMED BECAUSE OF MY AGE. yoga proved that. and continues to
prove that everyday.
and in addition to that miracle…. i have continued on the life path that started
at a young age and continues by virtue of having this adopted family of
extraordinary people at tranquil space in my life, in my heart, in my soul and
being on the PATH with me throughout.
i am surrounded by goddesses! i'm blessed.

why is it that you tend to discover exactly
what you need at exactly the right moment? cosmic intervention perhaps? i
stepped into tranquil space almost 3 years ago with absolutely no knowledge of
vinyasa flow looking for a way to simply cross-train and not expecting much more
out of a yoga practice. during my first class, i found myself simultaneously
lost & mesmerized somewhere in between a downdog and ukatasana or perhaps it was
utananasa. remember, i was completely mystified. as i walked out of the studio
on p street several savasanas later the veil of mystification slowly began to
disappear and the experience that had washed over me continued to draw me back
in. and yes, i was positive there was some magical potion in the lavender
aromatherapy spray.
the quiet refuge of the studio certainly provided a nourishing break from my
daily grind and soon became my office lunch break. reflecting back on my first
classes with tranquil space i had no idea those initial experiences would
inspire me on my recent journey to become a teacher, let alone leave a great
company & marketing career this summer to pursue teaching. as i was considering
the transition, i came across a passage by b.k.s. iyengar, "this idea of a
ladder to be climbed, even if it is in some ways flawed certainly leads to
invidious comparisons between practitioners or the establishment of a hierarchy
of excellence, is pretty universal. yoga avoids this because all petals are
practiced simultaneously and form a composite whole." now, mr. iyengar perhaps
was not referring to the concept of a corporate ladder, but i felt those words,
at that moment in my life were meant for me.
the students, fellow teachers and staff unequivocally create the tranquil
community & experience at the studio. i feel humbled each day i have the
opportunity to take the seat of the teacher and i am compassionately inspired
daily by my fellow yogis & yoginis.
