"yoga changes the way you feel, the way you look at things, and the
way you interpret what’s going on. – erich schiffman."
|
below are ten steps to enlightenment (or at least a little tranquility) this
fall.
1. put "on the mat" time into your schedule. make your yoga practice part
of your daily routine. maybe it begins slowly with an early morning sun
salutation and a before bed child’s pose. the duration is not as important as
the discipline to do it daily.
2. schedule quiet time. you’ve got to set aside some quality private time
to replenish. some of my faves are journal writing, meditating, herbal tea
sipping coupled with daydreaming, long walks, yoga, gardening, cooking, and
bookstore browsing.
3. write out your fall goals and reflect. what steps can you take now to
get you closer to what you had hoped this year would look like for you? where
are you now and where do you want to be? how have you grown this year? what
would you like the next three months to look and feel like?
4. clean out your closet. spend some time mulling through your closet and
shedding what you no longer wear. donate these items to charity or schedule a
swap. this process is cleansing and opens up space for a few new seasonal
must-haves.
5. host a charity-centered soiree. reconnect with your fave friends and
invite them all over to raise awareness and funds for a special cause dear to
your heart. this month’s focus is breast cancer awareness. how can you help
others think pink? Download a free toolkit
here
6. self-nurture with a girl’s (or boy’s) night in. gather all the
ingredients needed for a decadent evening at home – aromatherapy oils, your fave
bubbly beverage, an organic oatmeal facial scrub, and heaps of chamomile tea.
indulge in some sacred candlelit bath time with your favorite lime flavored
sparkling water nearby.
7. challenge yourself. take up a new hobby, start writing that novel,
schedule a vacation alone, study a foreign language, learn to knit, or sign up
for that salsa class you’ve been thinking about for years. take yourself out of
the comfort zone and watch a new, exciting world unfold.
8. get organized. clean up your finances, clear off your desk (or kitchen
table), sort through your kitchen cabinets, organize your paperwork into files,
and put your accessories into labeled drawers. clearing clutter frees the mind
and opens up space for renewed creativity.
9. join a group of like-minded people. how about a political group,
entrepreneur group, volunteer group, book club, toastmasters group, or knitting
circle? these connections will help you grow and open up new possibilities.
10. create soulful surroundings at home. set up an altar with photos of
loved ones and/or teachers, scatter your favorite scented soy candles throughout
your home, light nap champa incense, invest in easy-to-care-for plants such as
philodendrons, play invigorating and inspiring music, and learn to love your
special oasis.
i hope that these ten tools can infuse your fall with a yummy dose of
tranquility. as we celebrate our eighth year of serving the washington area, i
want to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing support. if there is
anything that we can do to serve you better, please
let me know.
happy haunting!
tranquilly
yours,
kimberly wilson

i'm thankful to have yoga in my life right
now. experiencing the power of being present and coming into my body time and
time again grounds me in a world that at times seems so uncertain and scary. the
contentment of feeling healthy goes a long way in keeping up my confidence. i
have faith and hope in community through my connections at tranquil space. maybe
i would have found these things in my life through something other than yoga.
maybe. but i found them through yoga. thank you to everyone for making tranquil
space what it is.
each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

unlike many yogis who experience love at first
asana practice, i can honestly say that yoga and i didn't hit it off right away.
chalk it up to bad timing, to my impatient stubborn streak, to my inability to
compromise...however you slice it, we decided we'd be better off as distant
friends. it took a cross-country move and jumpstarting a life in west hollywood
to find a companion in yoga. overextended and injured from running to compete
with life's stresses, i found myself searching desperately for peace in a mind
and body filled with imbalance.
somewhere around 6 weeks prior to my migration back east to washington, d.c. (my
hometown) i found yoga and fell madly in love. in the face of imbalance and
insecurity yoga has gracefully shown me the counter emotions to these
hindrances. i learn as i'm ready, and by cultivating the patience to understand
that the glory of asana is returning faithfully to practice.
i made it back to d.c. early last fall. with new found hope in just about every
category one can imagine, i took up yoga regularly. i joined tranquil space and
have been a faithful student ever since. the instructors nurture me with their
words, creativity and spirits. the energy of the studio inspires me to give more
-- to my loved ones, to myself, and to my community.
it's through tranquil space that i owe thanks for teacher training 1.
enthusiastic to deepen my own practice, i am also so excited about the prospect
of helping others deepen theirs! just taking the first step on that path gives
me such joy. it is also through the studio that i learned of karma yoga, where a
person takes the mindfulness practiced on the mat and incorporates that
thoughtful contemplation and action into their daily life practice. karma yoga
prompted me to volunteer my time and energy to help out with the tranquil space
foundation!
overall i feel enriched and grateful to tranquil space -- for every minute i
spend practicing and creating and for each new breathe of acceptance and grace.

i have been a tranquil space enthusiast about
a year and a ½ now. before that… i really can’t remember what life was like in
d.c, or how i even got through it on a daily basis! tranquil space has brought
so much to my life, so much more than just "yoga classes" or even "really
good, amazing yoga classes!"
there is a deep sense of community at tranquil space which makes it such a
comforting place to come to after a long day’s work, or any day at all really. i
love working behind the desk with all of the fabulous studio assistants and
managers! i feel so lucky to work with and be part of such an amazing team. i
have enjoyed every second of every class i have been in at tranquil space and i
am very grateful for our talented teachers!! it is very fulfilling to contribute
to this remarkable place which gives so many people a sense of serenity and i
hope that i have been able to give back all of the wonderful things that
tranquil space has given me.
