october is such a fun month! mainly for halloween. i loved it as a child, and going trick or treating with my siblings, but must admit i was never very creative when it came to costumes. even as an adult, i always got a bit anxious if i was required to wear a costume for a party or work.
what can also bring on anxiety this time of year is simply the time of year. october means that thanksgiving and the holidays are fast approaching. hard to ignore this when the stores start breaking out christmas decorations. i love michael's (the craft store), but they have their christmas stuff out. for that store, i understand a bit better, since it does take time and planning if you want to make decorations or presents for the holidays. so, to survive i put the blinders on and headed straight for the aisle i needed.
surviving the holidays and even the stress of daily modern life takes being mindful of what is going on and your reaction to it. let your yoga practice be part of your toolbox" for keeping the stress in check.
- set aside time for yourself whether attending class or getting up earlier to have 10 minutes to sit in quiet.
- give yourself a treat by starting a home practice keep the ambition low here; start with five sun salutations and savasana. as you get used to doing this a couple of times a week, then you can incorporate a few standing poses, bridge pose, and maybe legs up the wall or shoulderstand. remember, a little goes a long way.
- create an evening routine to help you unwind from your day, and let this be your ritual before climbing into bed. my favorite is a cup of chamomile tea and flipping through a catalog. it is mindless, and gives me the winding-down time.
- when you find yourself in a stressful situation stop, take a few deep breaths, and then notice what your body and mind are doing. how we react in these scenarios off the mat is the same on the mat.
the fall is so great, with the cooler weather, leaves turning colors, pumpkins, and cornfield mazes! if you have never gone to do one of these i highly recommend it. here is one that i have been to: www.circleofseeds.com. the washington post usually will list some of the local farms that do this and it is fun to try to find your way through a cornfield. i grew up in a city, and then the suburbs of houston, so this is particularly fun for me. if you have kids, take them to some of the local farms that let you pick your own pumpkin, or, better yet, pick apples! let yourself enjoy the month of october and even join september in our fall retreat to really get some tlc.

three years ago in charleston, sc, i skimmed across a class schedule at lifequest gym. "yoga . . . ha! i don't have the right body to practice yoga," i quietly whispered to myself. "i have such huge hips and weak arms!" on the following day, i briskly walked past the studio in my sneakers. the studio was dark and lit up with beautiful glowing candles. my interest piqued and i peered through the glass window. glistening bodies moved in unison, gracefully flowing from one pose to the next so powerful, energetic, and spiritual. i was captivated and yearned to join.
three years later, i am still practicing yoga with the same thoughts. i don't tell myself stories anymore about how i don't have the right body to practice yoga. i no longer find comfort in the anonymity of darkness. these are stories of the past. i am confident and i shine. it's the "little victories" in yoga that keep me curiously exploring the depths and capabilities of my body, mind, and spirit (i used to be scared of this!). i thank the teachers at tranquil space for fostering growth in different aspects of life and for creating a truly unique studio atmosphere. go team!

my (short but continuing) life as a yogi
i started taking yoga classes in 2000 when i began to notice a decrease in my flexibility. i started with anusara yoga which i found to be a great introduction to the asanas. i was ready to kick my yoga practice up a notch when i found tranquil space bethesda. i loved the practice in the church space with its high ceiling, but i am loving the feel of the new space and how it encourages community. i have been so thrilled to see the studio grow since the move. congrats to all!
i am a wonderful example of slow, but steady, progress in a yoga practice. when i began practicing yoga, i had a rotator cuff injury which limited the range of motion when i stretched out my arms above my head. one day, about a year after i had been practicing yoga, i lifted my arm and realized that it didn't hurt! last year, i anticipated what I thought would be inevitable aches and pains of winter, but they never arrived!
other small things that i love about yoga:
- how you think that you know how to do a pose, and then realize after years of practicing, that one small change makes all the difference;
- how, when you are holding a pose that stretches a muscle for a long time and think that you have stretched as far as you can, the muscle relaxes, and you stretch a little more;
- the instant rapport that you feel when someone says, "oh, you practice yoga so do i!"
- the love and support and encouragement of fellow yogis, especially in the early days of your practice, when you really need it;
- the sweetness of a deep breath.
