“autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
~ albert camus
ten tips to help you reconnect to your practice this fall
- put "on the mat" time into your schedule. make your yoga practice part of your daily routine. maybe it begins slowly with an early morning sun salutation and a before bed child's pose. the duration is not as important as the discipline to do it daily.
- schedule quiet time. you've got to set aside some quality private time to replenish. some of my faves are journal writing, meditating, herbal tea sipping coupled with daydreaming, long walks, yoga, gardening, cooking, and bookstore browsing.
|
- write out your fall goals and reflect. what steps can you take now to get you closer to what you had hoped this year would look like for you? where are you now and where do you want to be? how have you grown this year? what would you like the next three months to look and feel like?
- clean out your closet. spend some time mulling through your closet and shedding what you no longer wear. donate these items to charity or schedule a swap with your gal pals. this process is cleansing and opens up space for a few new seasonal must-haves.
- host a charity-centered soiree. reconnect with your fave friends and invite them all over to raise awareness and funds for a special cause dear to your heart. this month's focus is breast cancer awareness. how can you help others think pink?
- self-nurture with a girls' (or boys') night in. gather all the ingredients needed for a decadent evening at home aromatherapy oils, your fave bubbly beverage, an organic oatmeal facial scrub, and heaps of chamomile tea. indulge in some sacred candlelit bath time with your favorite lime flavored sparkling water nearby.
- challenge yourself. take up a new hobby, start writing that novel, schedule a vacation alone, study a foreign language, learn to knit, or sign up for that salsa class you've been thinking about for years. take yourself out of the comfort zone and watch a new, exciting world unfold.
- get organized. clean up your finances, clear off your desk (or kitchen table), sort through your kitchen cabinets, organize your paperwork into files, and put your accessories into labeled drawers. clearing clutter frees the mind and opens up space for renewed creativity.
- join a group of like-minded people. how about a political group, entrepreneur group, volunteer group, book club, toastmasters group, or knitting circle? these connections will help you grow and open up new possibilities.
- create soulful surroundings at home. set up an altar with photos of loved ones and/or teachers, scatter your favorite scented soy candles throughout your home, light nap champa incense, invest in easy-to-care-for plants such as philodendrons, play invigorating and inspiring music, and learn to love your special oasis.

i clearly recall my first yoga class. it was at a health club in princeton, new jersey, and was called hatha yoga. i had always been physically active but resisted joining classes. however, a stressful job and the sudden need to "do something for myself" led me to try this class, and thus began my passion for yoga. i remember the incredible feelings of being energized and relaxed, centered and balanced, a feeling of connection. it was pure poetry, a moving meditation. i couldn't get enough; i was hooked!
since that time, i have taken many classes, studied with a variety of wonderful teachers, developed a home practice, taught yoga in lesotho and south africa, completed teacher training, and have recently taken a "leap of faith" to teach yoga full time. teaching yoga comes from my passion for yoga and my desire to pass this on to others, to support them in their efforts to slow down mentally, to really hear what is going on inside, to feel good about themselves, to connect body, mind, and spirit, to develop an open heart to love and compassion. because once this happens, all things are possible.
one can look at life as a series of challenges to overcome or opportunities to grow and learn and change. I choose to do the latter because, every day is a gift and every moment is precious. i am inspired by the sound of my breath, the ability of my body to move, by nature in general, and the ocean specifically, and most certainly by my wonderful and loving family.
so take the time to count your blessings and create a spaciousness in your heart to cultivate compassion and loving-kindness for yourself and for others.

rose greenlee tranquil space dupont
it was with great trepidation that i climbed the stairs to tranquil space in september 2003. my practice level was elementary, to say the least, so this was a giant leap. after looking around at the ages of the students signing in and feeling quite intimidated, i slinked into the far corner at the back of the room. i decided to do what i could and hoped that it would not prove too embarrasing.
needless to say, the experience was liberating. i continue to look forward to my practices at tranquil space all because of the most caring, nuturing, and enthusiastic teachers anywhere. without their encouragment and assistance during my first few practices, i probably would have given up. my two-year experience has been extremely postive for me, both in the physical changes in my body and a more positive self esteem.
i end with a quote from swami bua that has become my words to live by: "youth is not a time of life it is a state of mind. it is not a matter of ripe cheeks, red lips and supple knees. it is a temper of the will, a quality of of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions. it is freshness of the deep springs of life. nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. people grow old only by deserting their ideals. years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."

i have been taking yoga classes in bethesda for almost a year now. i had plenty of encouragement from my family. my wife took her first yoga class many years ago, my daughter is an instructor, and my son took several classes in college. even so, i was not really sure what to expect. but from my first class as a beginner, our instructor, siobhan, made me feel welcome and comfortable.
when i am in class, i am able to forget all of life's stresses, big and small, and just focus on my practice. the class environment plays a big part with few distractions and great music it is not hard to relax at all. in some sessions i will do better than others, but every session is thoroughly satisfying. your only competition is with yourself, not with anyone else in the class. learning new positions and perfecting old ones, you proceed at your own pace.
siobhan strikes just the right balance, encouraging you to move a little deeper into each position, but reminding you that how far and how fast is always your decision. she also provides some nice extra touches, ending each session with an inspirational reading and, of course, tea and cookies. for those of us with a busy lifestyle, tranquil space is incredibly flexible you can take one class at a time, or an entire series and classes are given during the day and in the evening several days a week.
yoga has many benefits. for me, it helps with my balance mentally and physically. i have developed some neck problems in the past few years and yoga really helps improve my posture and minimize any discomfort that i would otherwise experience. yoga is also great for my golf game. among other things, it enhances my concentration and flexibility.
if you are not sure whether yoga is for you, just drop in and try a lesson. you just might be pleasantly surprised.

i took a class at a yoga studio several years ago. all during class, all i could focus on was the strong smell of "feet" in the class. needless to say, i did not go back there. i did take some yoga classes at my gym, but my practice didn't really improve.
since my father passed away in august 2003, and then my little brother died suddenly in a freak car accident a month later, i've had this urge to "take off" somewhere. a work/study jaunt at a shambhala center in the mountains, a year in rural thailand, a few months studying qi gong in beijing, all appealed to me. then things seemed to get worse for me a seven-year relationship ended, and a startup i had been working on for two years also folded.
with the help and support of incredible friends and my sister, i began to confront my recent losses as well as some very old childhood pain on my path to healing. then i discovered tranquil space in november 2004, shortly after my acl surgery. although i wasn't able to practice, just being around the studio gave me some of the peace i had sought earlier in my plans to "escape" my reality. i also love the embodiment of yoga and life kimberly practices that being a yogi doesn't mean that you can't be fashionable, that we don't need to give up something to be something more. when i was finally able to practice at tranquil space earlier this year, i found that i was able to connect with my body with the poses in ways i was never even aware of before. every teacher i've had the fortune to take a class with has been wonderful in his/her own ways. and i haven't thought of or smelled "feet" once during practice!
