full moon yoga
The luminous fullness of the moon represents plenitude, abundance, and generous blessings. Join Danielle Polen for a beautiful evening of flowing, meditative movement, featuring guided Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) by candlelight, lunar mantras, and poetic offerings. In contrast to the energetic, heating quality of sun salutations, moon salutations cultivate a sense of calm and rejuvenation, providing an opportunity to shed old layers and reaffirm our highest intentions. Come and celebrate the feeling of being fully alive, as you absorb and integrate the powerful energy and quiet beauty of the full moon.
And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet always in her proper sphere
She's Mistress of the Night.
--Henry David Thoreau

running workshop: the journey on the road to self discovery
Pary will lead you in bringing a more mindful approach to the running. Beginners and experienced are welcome as we enjoy the beautiful scenery of Rock Creek Park. We will begin in the Sea Studio and transition to a walking meditation as we gradually begin to pick up the pace. Total running/walking will be about 45 minutes.
Afterwards, nurture your body with a soothing and rejuvenating yoga practice with focus on opening the calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, hips, lower back and abdominals. Your running performance will benefit from a greater range of motion and a more efficient stride. Besides, yoga feels so good after a run! We'll end with tea and cookies in the green tea lounge at noon to answer any questions and revel in the sensations of running coupled with yoga.
Bring comfortable clothes for both the run and yoga practice. Running shoes are preferable to prevent injury. Eat a light meal before this workshop, i.e., banana or half of a bagel. Water is fine to bring if you don't mind carrying it on our journey. No yoga mat is needed as we'll be learning yoga poses to do outdoors to assist you in implementing a yoga practice to compliment your run.

deepening your practice: hip openers
It has been said that the more open the hips, the more open the heart! Join Pary Williamson for an afternoon of hip focusing fun. This workshop will begin with meditation and a flow of various standing asanas to warm the body and gradually open the hips. The breath will be used to assist the opening while allowing the body to go deeper into each pose. The afternoon will end with floor work, using seated and supine poses to relieve tightness and unwanted stored emotions from the hips. You will leave the workshop feeling relaxed and restored throughout while gaining a better understanding of working with your hips!

women's candlelight halloween practice: make room for mystery awaken to the magic
"At last the bewitching hour has arrived: All Hallow's Eve."
Halloween comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain, held on the last autumn night before the cold and bleakness of winter. Halloween is the perfect time for intention setting and reminding ourselves that magic flows through us and mystery infuses every encounter of every day. In this workshop, led by Pary and surrounded by jack o'lanterns and candles, we will explore the magic within us through journaling, group discussion and fun exercises to help us become fully aware of our feminine powers! We will begin by sharing favorite Halloween memories or exerpts from spooky Halloween tales or poems. During our yoga practice, we will use visualization techniques to help us don the "costumes" of various living things as we move through their namesake asanas. Everyone will leave with a fun bag of fun treats after warm apple cider and pumpkin cookies!
You will need to bring a journal (or just a pen and paper if you don't have one) and a favorite spooky poem, story or memory to share. Fun costumes are optional, as long as you can comfortably practice in them.

asana of the month
setu bandhasana/bridge
Benefits: This pose opens the chest and stretches the abdominal wall; tones the bum and thighs; and stablizes, releases, and brings relief to the lower back. It opens the breathing body, creating a new awareness and rhythm. Backbends tend to open the heart center, ease depression and colds which arise during this time of the year.
yogi of the month
kim o'donnel

I gravitated towards yoga while mending a broken heart in February 2002. On the surface, it seemed like the perfect antidote an opportunity to roll around on the floor and stretch my body, close my eyes and defrag from the stresses of my job, and most importantly, to forget at least while on the mat about my sorrow. And so it was. I quickly began to feel better, less ugly, more worthy, more fabulous, more everything. I washed the man out of my hair, too. And the yoga I couldn't get enough of the stuff.
I had no idea that yoga would become more than a quick emotional salve but an integral part of my life. Almost two years, one retreat, several workshops, two Tranquil Space catering jobs and one teacher training later, I see that everything is yoga, and yoga is everything. With every day, I see my on-the-mat life increasingly mirror my off-the-mat life. Just this week, I described a relationship that is important to me as a "flying crow." I start my day with a down dog, even if it's only one. When I have a headache, I go upside down. When I experience conflict, I now react less and strive for balance, just as if I were doing tree pose or dancer.
When Kimberly told me she was going to need food for the first grand opening party of the new studio space, I refused to let her drive to Costco for a fruit and cheese tray. Food has been my line of work for the past seven years, and I feel passionately about its connection with the body, mind, spirit and community. If yoga was doing the same thing bringing the physical body in touch with the mind, spirit and community then I knew home-cooked food, prepared with love, was an absolute must for this kind of event. Over the years, I've had many gratifiying experiences cooking for others, but watching guests mill about the studio in the middle of January, barefoot and enjoying my food, well, that experience soared to the top of my list.
I was never blind, but I think I do see more clearly with yoga. I am grateful for the community of Tranquil Space for its place in my life, for the friends I've made and for the contributions I've been able to make. Yoga high-fives all around.

tranquiliTeam player of the month
marianne leal

About six months ago, I was in Lesotho, Southern Africa, contemplating life after my two years of Peace Corps service ended. At that time, I knew that my husband and I would be relocating to DC and would need to find an apartment, jobs, and for me a yoga studio. Although I've been practicing yoga for about four years and held classes for other Peace Corps volunteers and Host Country Nationals while in Africa, I felt like my practice hadn't grown. So, at the first opportunity, I checked the internet to see what DC had to offer in the way of yoga. That is how I met Kimberly and Tranquil Space.
There was just something about the information that was presented on the website that resonated within me and touched my soul. So, I emailed Kimberly introducing myself, telling her of my journey and plans for the future. (I'd never sent an email like that to a complete stranger before!) Kimberly sent me back such a lovely email, I knew I had found a kindred spirit.
After arriving in DC in June and unpacking, I came to Tranquil Space to meet Kimberly and take my first class in over two years. It was wonderful! Kimberly and everyone at the studio were so warm and friendly, it was like I had found a home. Since then, I have worked as a studio assistant with all the amazing people that make Tranquil Space such a special place. Amazingly, my yoga practice has grown as I continue on my journey, moment by moment, breath by breath.

reflective closing thoughts

"In the right view both of life and of yoga, all life is either consciously or subconsciously yoga." ~ Sri Aurobindo

I am continually amazed by the extreme varied perceptions of what it means to be a yogi. How can it be so easy for Westerners to practice hatha yoga regularly and still not understand the vastness of the practice? I struggle with this regularly as my focus is not necessarily in only studying the ancient spiritual texts, yearning to spend time in an ashram or even learning sanskrit. Many question whether yoga has become too Westernized. I believe that the practice should work for people of today however they choose to use it. One may find that an initial intention of toning the body quickly evolves into a desire to learn more about oneself, to take more chances in life, and to enjoy a new sense of empowerment. THIS is the true power of yoga.
Our yoga practice is continually evolving and the needs or intentions of approaching the mat each time varies. How can this be wrong? We are always at new crossroads in our busy, stress-filled lives and I'm grateful for the relief that yoga provides many Washingtonians. I encourage each one of you to determine what the practice means to you, how it has assisted your life journey, and to never berate yourself for not being good enough, not knowing enough, or not getting a certain pose. The power of yoga is so much deeper and so individual.
In the approaching crisp months, why not consciously contemplate your yoga practice when you set your intention or dedication? As our natural world begins to shed its leaves, so too can we turn inward and shed what no longer serves us. All of life can be your yoga practice and carrying strength, flexibility, courage and a sense of power off of the mat into your life can have profound results.
I encourage you to complete your practice by invoking the quality of yoga into all aspects of your life. Notice how you speak and interact with others as you leave the studio, how you handle situations and relationships, how you handle challenges. Are you able to view your life as filled with mini-vinyasas that begin and end with best intentions, compassion and love? This month allow yourself to move out of the feeling that your practice has to be a certain way and let it evolve into an internal awareness-filled practice by taking it (and life) one pose at a time.
Much love and gratitude for your continued support,
Kimberly Wilson
