the eight limbs: taking your yoga to the next level
While most styles of yoga focus on the poses (third limb) and the breathing (fourth limb), there are many other aspects of yoga. In The Yoga Sutras, Patanjali outlined eight limbs. By learning to work these other limbs into their practice, students of yoga can take their practice to the next level. In this workshop with Darren Main poses and breathing are used as a foundation for the latter limbs. By holding poses for longer periods of time, students will have the opportunity to explore the other limbs and to see how they apply to the whole of their practice, as well as to life itself.

yogi of the month

Since I began practicing yoga at Tranquil Space this past winter, I have noticed tremendous growth and change within myself. As a student at Georgetown University, I have led a fairly intense and stressful way of life, and I added to that stress by not allowing myself time to relax, appreciate, and simply "be". My yoga practice has allowed me to do all of that, and as a result, I have felt happier, more balanced, and clearer than I have since I started college. Yoga, with its mental, spiritual, and physical capacities, has moved me to start approaching life in a new way. Tranquil Space has also been a key role in my development and practice. I feel welcome every time I enter the space, and I learn something new about yoga--and myself--every time I attend a class with Kimberly.

I love the philosophy and movement of yoga, and I've found myself incorporating it more and more into my everyday life. Most recently, I've been taking the Level I teacher's training, which has been a wonderful experience, as I cannot wait to share the benefits of yoga with others. Kimberly is a great teacher, and I'm so thankful for all that I've learned from her!

As an environmentalist, activist, academic and dreamer, there's a world in which I live and a world in which I'd like to live. My personal, moral and physical challenge is to make them one and the same. Tranquil Space provides me with a vehicle for this exploration - a community and a process extending beyond the physical to intention and reflection.

I used to sit in the front row, but then one day I got hit by a rock thrown through the studio window. Normally, I might have reacted with anger, frustration and possibly a tinge of fear. However, on that day and at that instant, I proceeded, nonplussed, to sweep away the glass, move my mat and return to the vinyasa flow. The yogic message I internalized was that for that moment, my inner and outer worlds were as one. This is but one example of how my habitual perspectives on and reactions to the world have been altered in subtler and kinder ways.

Tranquil Space is obviously a metaphor that each of us takes to heart in a different form and meaning. I am thankful to Kimberly, the rest of her staff and my fellow yogis for providing such an environment that lets me address some of these questions and their internal/external boundaries. Without wanting to sound cliché, ultimately this relatively simple yoga practice allows me to honor the Tranquil Space in you that is the Tranquil Space within me.

reflective closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"Teaching Yoga is one of the greatest services you can render, and is one of the most honorable occupations you can have. To help someone relieve some of their suffering and see them rediscover the happiness and love in their life is one of the greatest possible rewards."
~ John Friend

Yoga brings so many benefits to practitioners and I like to remind people that the joy can be carried out of the studio and obtained daily through one's own practice. Many students ask how to develop a practice at home or how to deepen their practice. October's reflection is on the art of home practice.

Three vinyasa yoga books have come out in the past few months and one we are using in the training is Baron Baptiste's Journey into Power. Baptiste reflects beautifully on resistance in our practice as a great teacher, claiming that even he has moments of resistance towards approaching the mat but those days usually turn out to be his most powerful practices. The resistance that is felt towards one's practice is normal and can often lead to breakthroughs when we are willing to approach the mat consciously, stay with the poses, and observe the emotions that arise. Often times it has nothing to do with yoga but more to do with what is going on in one's life. The ability to realize this, indulge in self-compassion, and engage in just one downward facing dog can help to ease pain and open the body.

During our retreat to Mexico in August, I discussed the components of a home practice and encouraged the participants to do what they can. By reminding them that we don't all have time for an extended daily home practice, we can make it a goal to do at least one pose a day and then, in time, build on that. Notice a pose you resist or a pose you've been struggling with at the studio. Lovingly add this into a regular sequence at home and notice the mental and physical openings that begin to take place. This month allow yourself to evolve out of the feeling that you have to practice for a certain period of time and into a beginner home practice by taking it (and life) one pose at a time.

**********************************************

As many of you know, we are currently hosting a teacher training at the studio and I am blessed to have such amazing souls participating. The joy that yoga brings to so many people never ceases to amaze me and being surrounded by yogis eager to teach and share their joy is of great inspiration. A special thanks to the teacher trainees (Dulcie, Andrea, Sytera, Donna, Ijeoma, Leigh, Katia, Amy, Gina, Alison, Pary, Nancy, Kevin, Jill) for their enthusiasm and dedication to their own practice. You serve as an inspiration both on and off the mat.

Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
