"Let's be grateful for those who give us happiness; they are the charming gardeners who make our soul bloom." ~ Marcel Proust

This month officially jump-starts the holiday season. Time for giving thanks, sharing gratitude, and turning energy inward as the brisk air surrounds you. Take advantage of this time by reflecting on how nature is encouraging you to slow your pace and spend quiet time in contemplation.
If feelings of lethargy or sadness creep in during the darker, colder
days where hibernation feels a necessity, counter them with:
- backbends
- alternate nostril breathing
- journal writing
- warm baths
- heaps of hot tea
- crackling fires
- making a gratitude list
November is a month that embodies change. Nature reminds you to take
down time and let go as the trees are shedding their leaves. Tune into
the upcoming holiday festivities filled with food and friends, and absorb all the sensations—the
smell of apples baking, the taste of warm bread, the sounds of
laughter. The yoga practice of mindfulness and awareness can be carried
into the upcoming activities during the holidays. With a focus on being
present and really listening to Aunt Betty’s yearly diatribe while
finding a bit of humor in these challenges, you will emerge a bit saner.
This season is also the perfect time to express gratefulness
for all you have, how far you've come, and where you're heading. Let
the season encourage you to give of yourself through service in your
work, family, and friendships. Remember, no one comes into your world
by accident. Honor and accept the huge responsibility you share with
others through your everyday interactions. As Oprah so poetically
stated, "Think about what you have to give, not in terms of dollars,
because I believe that your life is about service. It's about what you
came to give to the world." You have no idea of the countless lives you touch in the course of your lifetime. Thank you for continuing to touch mine through Tranquil Space.

Please remember to use your voice by voting on Tuesday, November 2. You DO make a difference with the myriad of choices you make every day.

If you have plans to be in San Francisco over Thanksgiving, join me at Yoga Tree Hayes on Sunday, November 28 from 2-4 for an energetic and inspiring flow workshop.

The benefits of my yoga practice are constantly evolving and
shifting. Yoga has been a personal sanctuary, a source of fuel to power
my weary tank, and a space for me to reflect and be more mindful about
my actions in the world. Yoga means "union"—it teaches that our fates
are tied together just as our breath is linked with the flow of our
bodies during asana practice.
Through yoga I have grown aware of how my policy work on peace and
justice, like all jobs, often manifests as tension in my physical body.
My achy sacrum or knotted shoulder blades are often the first signs
that I need to tune in to what is going on for me emotionally.
During this historic election season, for example, yoga has been a
powerful gift. With so much spin and artifice clouding the real issues,
I have felt my jaw clench and my backache flare. Yoga has helped me to
have patience with the absurd mud slinging and to cope with the gravity
of the challenges we face in the world.
I find there is no greater relief from this type of physical and
emotional tension than the release I experience from a deep, silent,
uttanasana with my torso completely surrendered over my thighs and the
pull of gravity elongating my neck toward the earth. I sometimes
visualize all the images of suffering that I carry to my yoga mat, from
war down to my own personal challenges, slowly dissipating out the
crown of my head.
This yogic practice of "pranidhana" or surrender is not about trying
to forget problems or suffering but about gaining the space to find a
fresh vantage point. I can walk around feeling paralyzed over my
frustration about the crisis in Iraq, or I can release my attachment to
blame and shift my focus to my power to act. When I act with equanimity
and an open heart I find that possibilities reveal themselves.
A similar choice presents itself on the yoga mat. I sometimes catch
myself struggling past my edge to get into a full yoga pose when my
body is telling me to modify. The yogic principle of "ahimsa" or
nonviolence reminds me to go easy on myself and to recognize my healthy
limits both on the yoga mat an in life. To make space for the things
that sustain me like the comfort of yoga and the love of family and
friends.
Yoga helps me to examine what is going on in my body and in the
world and to be mindful about my relationship to both. It is a deeply
personal and privileged journey.
It reminded me to always step back, take a deep, full breath, and to
look at the big picture. Three steps that help us avoid sweatin’ the
small stuff.

asana of the
month
alternate nostril breath/nadi shodhana
|
benefits: A powerful method of balancing which in Sanskrit means "nadi cleansing."
This practice is effective in restoring your equilibrium. To practice Nadi Shodhana: sit in a comfortable meditative position.
Lightly place the pad of the thumb on your nose just to the right and below the
bridge; lightly place the pads of your ring and little fingers on the
corresponding flesh on the left side of your nose. Gently pressing with the ring
and little fingers to close the left nostril, exhale fully through the right.
Then inhale fully through the right, close it with the thumb, release the left
nostril, and exhale through it. Inhale through the left nostril, close it with
the fingers, release the right nostril, and exhale through it. This completes
one round of Nadi Shodhana. Emerge balanced and restored!

When I first went to Tranquil Space about two years ago, I really couldn't
sit on a hard floor. I did all kinds of exercise—rollerblading, tennis,
swimming, hiking—and none of them from a sense of should, but rather to
indulge in the pure pleasure of movement. So I thought that my floor
troubles were just part of aging, and decided to ignore the whole thing. To
just chill out and contemplate my navel with some sense of maturing dignity.
Tranquil Space opened up a whole world to me. Not the hoochy-kooch I had
always assumed yoga to be—I had previously only heard that word uttered in
a very breathy, glazed-eyes kind of way. But instead the yoga of Tranquil
Space—of really connecting to your breath, of that insistence that your
own body should be your guide and the poses are signposts along the way, of
an incredibly warm and welcoming atmosphere—all cushioned with tea and
cookies, aromatherapy, lots of pink, and wonderfully generous teachers.
Thank you, TS, for all of that. Now I can contemplate my navel and the new
life in there from, well, a much broader perspective!

I discovered yoga about six years ago - right after my 30th
birthdayand several months before Tranquil Space was born. When
Kimberly began teaching small classes in her living room, I was blessed
to be among the small group of people who discovered this magic place
where a flowing, nurturing practice ended with homemade chai in front
of a warm fire. Every day, I am grateful for the gift of this discovery.
Yoga allows me to rest, to grow, to start anew with each pose of
themonth, each downward dog, each breath. Each time I sit in "easy
pose" on my purple mat, the teacher reminds me to accept who I am and
where I am today; to stretch my body but to hold my ego in check; to do
my own yoga, not to compare to the mat next to mine. Yoga lets me
simply be. Tranquil Space gives me a joyful space to share that with
others.
Tranquil Space is about 20 times bigger than when I took my first
class with Kimberly. Yet, as the studio has grown from one small room
to a church to its current multi-level home - it manages still to feel
welcoming, special, even intimate in some of the same ways it did in
the beginning. I miss knowing everyone's name, but I love the
woman-owned, community-minded success that Tranquil Space has become.
Thank you to everyone who has made the studio the place it is today,
and to everyone who helps it keep growing along with its students.
Namaste.
