  • Seeking Weekend Studio Manager. We're in search of a detail-oriented, yoga-loving, joy-filled manager for our weekends. Please visit studio opportunities for details.

We are seeking suggestions on who to support for our holiday party through canned goods or small donations to a charity that is close to our yogis' hearts. Please let us know of a charity close to yours by e-mailing kat@tranquilspace.com.
  • Holiday schedule is available online. We are open throughout the holidays but operating on a reduced schedule so please take note of the offered class times.
  • Yogi Babies online! Share your photos of your beloved babies with us and let us welcome them into the community.

  • Newbie Yogi Series coming again on Saturdays in November! A 4-week series catered to the developing, inquisitive yogi. Visit the newbie yogi series page for details!
  • Yogi goodies: please note the mat cleaning spray we've added to the dressing rooms to help keep your mats fresh, the book exchange basket in the tea lounge, and the goodie basket in the girls' dressing room with body spray, hair ties and lotions. Enjoy!
  • Please familiarize yourself with studio tips.
  • Share your thoughts: We have placed a suggestions box in the swirlie hallway which awaits any comments, praise or requests our yogis may have. Or please fill out this studio survey. View our comment corner to read our replies. Thank you for sharing!
  • Community celebration: A way to celebrate Tranquil Space yogis' honors and developments!
  • Please share your recent news with us by e-mailing newsletter@tranquilspace.com.
    • Carole Sargent, a book author and Georgetown English professor, took Kimberly's Artist's Way series in early 2001. She loved it and used the inspiration to start A Word in Time, an agency helping writers find literary agents and publish books! If you are interested in a six-week publishing seminar, please visit http://www.awordintime.com.
    • Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) needs your help! Please join Tranquil Space teacher Gina Davis on 11/22 for the 12th annual Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon. asana of the month
urdva dhanurasana/wheel

Benefits: This pose opens the chest and stretches the abdominal wall; tones the bum and thighs; and stablizes, releases, and brings relief to the lower back. It opens the breathing body, creating a new awareness and rhythm. Backbends tend to open the heart center, ease depression and colds which arise during this time of the year.

"If I can't reinvent myself, how can I find my true self," Dorothy Allison.

To me, this describes my relationship with yoga and with life. Every time I step on the yoga mat, I have the opportunity to recreate myself through poses, vinyasas, breaths, and sometimes grunts. On Monday I can do the perfect tree pose and Wednesday I can't balance to save my life. And this is how my yoga practice goes. The only thing about my practice that remains constant is that every time I come off the mat I continue to be rewarded by an elevated sense of myself.

There are a few things that have recently affected my practice: Warrior I, headstand, and forearmstand. When I began my practice two years ago, Warrior I felt easy and I enjoyed this pose for about a year. Then I listened to a teacher's description about how I was supposed to have "squared hips!" This was something I'd heard about 100 times but this time I understood. I made that seemingly minor adjustment and ever since I've been struggling with the pose. It is no longer natural for me. While I am stunned at having to relearn this pose, I am excited about the new challenge and the notion that new realizations will continue not just with my poses, but with my life. Likewise, I never thought I would be able to do headstand nor did I think I could learn to become more patient. Eventually a teacher set me up with the proper base for headstand and suggested staying in a short down-dog until I felt strong enough to go to the wall. I did this for a month. One day I went to the wall, set up my base, and without thinking, got straight up. For two seconds I stayed balanced on my own. To date, that is my favorite, albeit shortest, headstand. Now I'm working on forearmstand and all I can do is hold my arms around a block in a short down-dog. I've been doing this for months and I feel like it will be months more before I go to the wall. The first time I held this awkward pose I fell over after two breaths, now I can hold it for eight breaths. With every attempt I grow, reinvent, and learn patience.

I am thankful for Tranquil Space and for all the gifted teachers and fellow yogis that help me in obvious and subtle ways to find my true self through yoga.

I love working at Tranquil Space! There is no other environment where I feel so welcomed and comfortable. My life has changed dramatically in the last 11 weeks since Sophia was born. My family is so excited about meeting her, sometimes I wonder if anyone remembers who I am! There are times I'm so wrapped up in my love for her, I neglect my own needs. Then I think about my friends, especially those I've met through Tranquil Space, and I feel like myself again and remember to take care of myself. I know that taking care of myself allows me to be the best mom I can be. I'm thrilled to begin teaching the postnatal yoga series. This is a way to combine my love of yoga, teaching and my baby all in one!! Bringing Sophia with me "to work" brings up all kinds of anxieties: will she be hungry? cranky? Will she sleep through it all? I have no idea. But I do know that I'm ready to accept the uncertainty and to be in the moment. I love teaching yoga not only because I love helping people open up to themselves, but also because on a daily basis, it's so important to me. So thank you, thank you, thank you Tranquil Space for nurturing my ever-changing meditation, yoga and teaching practice! Namaste.

reflective closing thoughts

"Let us be grateful to people who make us happy. They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."
~ Marcel Proust

This month officially jump starts the holiday season. Time for giving thanks, sharing gratitude with family and friends, and with the brisk chilly air enveloping us, turning our energies inward. I find that the Fall season also brings about lots of time for self-reflection as we're no longer running away on the weekends to the beach or spending as much time outdoors, we are forced to spend more time inside, alone with ourselves.

This newfound alone time can be used in numerous ways, especially during the approaching holidays which can often disrupt our balance. Begin by reflecting on the Fall season, notice if feelings of lethargy or sadness creep in. The darker, colder days can bring about feelings not experienced under sunny, warmer conditions. Counter these feelings with backbends, journal writing, warm baths, and hot cups of tea. Take advantage of this time by reflecting on the meaning of these months, the holidays, what they represent to you, and how nature encourages us to slow our pace and spend time inward.

November is a month ripe with the changing season. The request by nature to take some down time, to shed old habits, negativity, things or people that aren't serving you, concurrently with the leaves falling from the trees. Savor the upcoming holiday filled with food and friends, and absorb all the sensations — the smell of apples baking, the taste of warm bread, the sounds of laughter — surrounding these experiences. The yoga practice of mindfulness and full awareness can be carried off of the mat and into the upcoming activities of this season.

In addition, November is a perfect time to express gratefulness for all we have, how far we've come and where we're heading. Let the season encourage you to give of yourself through service in your work, family, and friendships. Remember, no one comes into your world by accident. Honor and accept the huge responsibility we all share with one another through our everyday interactions. "Think about what you have to give, not in terms of dollars, because I believe that your life is about service. It's about what you came to give to the world." ~ Oprah Winfrey

May our bodies and minds be healthy.
May our thoughts be filled with love.
May our practice be free of obstacles.
May we carry its benefits into the world.
