asana of the month
kurmasana / tortoise
Benefits of this pose: stretches the spinal column, opens the hips and hamstrings, and rejuvenates the whole nervous system.
yogi of the month
freya grand

My yoga practice began as an experiment a little over two years ago, in
my efforts to find another form of exercise that would be good for my body
and would keep my mind interested. What I discovered at the very beginning
was that I loved the grace and the aesthetic of the asanas (even before I
could do them correctly!), that my body felt pleasantly tired and well
stretched after each class, and that the challenges of doing the poses
carefully and with proper alignment kept my interest level high.
This had been all I was seeking, at first. And so it was a lovely
additional discovery that the regular practice seemed to be enhancing my
focus and concentration in my work (I am a painter) and giving me the
beginnings of an experience that would lead me to want to take up meditation
as well.
I look forward with great pleasure to each class.
tranquilTeam player of the month
gina davis

I started practicing yoga two years ago when I was
going through a very introspective time in my life,
full of personal challenges and changes. Yoga has
opened up so much space for me - physically,
emotionally and spiritually. Being on the yoga mat is a
consistent and gentle reminder for me to live in the
present moment, accept where I am, honor myself, and
grow from there. When I can more consciously cultivate
compassion and loving-kindness towards myself, I am
better able to extend that to others as well.
Tranquil Space and the unique vinyasa style offered
there have been integral to the development of my yoga
practice. Kimberly's attentive and nurturing
instruction fosters a steady, consistent practice while
also challenging me to grow, learn and develop my
potential. Working as a studio assistant has
enabled me to contribute to the studio, to meet many
like-minded yogis, and to take more yoga classes. I
really appreciate the workstudy opportunity.
I recently completed the teacher training with
Kimberly - this was an amazing experience. The training
deepened my own practice as well as teaching me how to
share yoga with new students. I see
teaching yoga to others as an opportunity to share the
gifts I have received through my yoga practice and
studies. I currently work at a non-profit specializing
in economic development for low-income families, and I
hope to soon start sharing yoga within the communities
in which I work.

reflective closing thoughts

|
"Think about what you have to give, not even in terms of dollars, because I believe that your life is about service. It's about what you came to give to the world, to your children, to your family."
~ Oprah Winfrey

This month officially jump starts the holiday season. Time for giving thanks, sharing gratitude with family and friends, and with the brisk chilly air enveloping us, turning our energies inward. I find that the fall season also brings about lots of time for self-reflection as we're no longer running away on the weekends to the beach or spending lots of time outdoors, we are forced to spend more time inside, alone with ourselves.
This newfound alone time can be used in numerous ways, especially during the approaching holidays. Begin by reflecting on the Fall season, noticing if feelings of lethargy or sadness begin to creep in. The darker, colder days can bring about feelings not experienced under sunny, warmer conditions. Counter these feelings with backbends, journal writing, warm baths and hot cups of tea. Take advantage of this down time by reflecting on the meaning of these months, how nature encourages us to slow our pace, and spend time inward.
November is a month ripe with the changing season, the request by nature to take some down time, to shed old habits or negativity along with the leaves falling from the trees, savor the holiday filled with food and friends, and absorb all the sensations surrounding these experiences. The yoga practice of mindfulness and full experience can be carried off of the mat and into the upcoming activities of this season. In addition, November is a perfect time to express gratefulness for all we have, our friends, family, health, and numerous other areas of abundance. Let the season encourage you to give of yourself through service in your work, family, friendships. Namaste.
Many Blessings and Gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson
