welcome to may at tranquil space. we are delighted to
be celebrating our first year in our 17th street haven
and our tenth year of serving up tranquility in
washington!
over the next six months we will be hosting special
events for the countdown to our 10-year birthday bash on
friday, october 30. stay tuned for all the scoop and be
sure to mark your social calendars. in reflection over
the past ten years, i wanted to share insights into our
tranquilosophy. |
tranquil space exists to serve. when we launched in
fall 1999, my hope was to connect individuals seeking a
like-minded community through yoga. this vision has
grown and expanded over the years, but the value is
still at the core of tranquil space. as a means for even
further expansion of our values, we launched
tranquil space foundation three years ago. (watch
video from last week’s lunafest event). i
believe that organizations and individuals shine best
when giving back.
wondering how to incorporate a little day-to-day do-gooding?
below are a few, simple ways to make a difference in
your daily life:
1. exude kindness: smile, say “thank you” often,
listen fully.
2. get active: support a cause with all your
heart and oodles of resources.
3. build community: gather like-minded
individuals to find support and combine efforts.
4. give back: share your resources, plant a
community garden, pick up trash.
5. go green: reuse paper, eat in season, switch
to wind-powered electricity.
6. be present: give others your full attention.
7. reach out: touch base with loved ones. send
“thinking of you” e-mails.
8. live simply: pack your lunch, savor tea
sipping, trim expenses.
9. be beautiful: put your best self forward.
always do your best.
10. live your yoga: lokah samastah sukhino
bhavantu.
maya angelou reminds us, “i've learned that people will
forget what you said, people will forget what you did,
but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
may we all work daily to leave a memorable mark on the
world. after all, that’s what yoga is all about. what is

of the five niyamas we practice in yoga, samtosha serves as
one of the brightest stars for me. samtosha, or contentment, allows for peace
within ourselves and peace with what is outside of ourselves. like so many
others and particularly in these days, i find it often takes incredible patience
to be in the presence of uncertainty and weather much of the chaos that
surrounds us. samtosha gives us a choice during uncertain times: to acknowledge
current state of mind and current issues at hand while knowing life is dynamic
and in constant evolution and while keeping in mind samtosha is serenity, but it
doesn’t mean complacency or apathy.
a tool i use to practice samtosha is to hold fast to my atman, my authentic self
- what feels right to my soul, what strengthens my mind, and what moves my
spirit. by staying very much in tune to my atman, i can often find a certain
sense of ease, or contentment in reckoning with the ups and downs of daily life.
to experience samtosha is to experience being in a natural state of humanity,
not perfection, just a balance between our internal and external lives.
samtosha can also allow for authentic creativity to emerge. music plays a
significant role
in my life, both personally and professionally. if you find yourself in one of
my classes, you may notice this particular expression of my atman. another
expression is dance. my practice and my teaching is in part a legacy to my late
aunt, merrilee smith, who danced with the new york city ballet and was director
of the atlanta ballet for many years. it gives me great pleasure to remember her
by creating dance-like movements in yoga and encouraging others to enjoy a sense
of fluidity and lightness between postures and in sequencing. i treasure a poem
once written for auntie, who undoubtedly celebrated her atman in the world of
classical dance: “merrilee smith was a friend of the dance in the atlantan world
of culture and art. her way of life was to form and enhance the uncluttered
ballet of the mind and heart. her's was the spirit of music and movement. the
ultimate beauty of the unspoken whole erased the partial by constant
improvement. her life was the balance of body and soul.”
a deep sense of contentment can be found in those moments when we feel we are in
the flow of life, be it chaotic or quiet, when our energies are positive and
when we have no wish to be anywhere but the present moment.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
while spring is officially a time of rebirth, it’s also a time when we must decide if we have the will to bloom again, to become a flower. as journalist stacie krajchir writes, “flowering from an itty-bitty seed it not easy, it’s a commitment. it’s slow and takes work and watering and time. so much work.”
bhujapidasana, too, takes work. commitment. but also a sense of lightheartedness, anusara yoga founder john friend encourages us to cultivate a playful attitude when approaching bhujapidasana. “although at first you might not be able to perform the pose without a great deal of effort,” he notes, “every attempt makes a lasting impression in the energetics of your mind-body. so, dedicate yourself to regular practice of this pose … and you will soon experience a new level of self-empowerment.”

tranquil space has taught me something
invaluable—to laugh at myself. when i first joined, my earnest, competitive
nature did not find anything funny or delightful about falling out of a balance
pose or confusing warrior one with warrior two. it was defeating. through the
gentle guidance of the caring instructors i have (nearly) stopped judging my
every move and have learned to laugh at my stumbles. yes, it sometimes takes an
entire class before i stop trying to do every pose perfectly and just savor the
moment. and, this often happens when i’m falling out of pose or being gently
guided to once again relax my shoulders. for this i thank everyone at tranquil
space--from the welcoming and always smiling team at the front desk, to the many
insightful and inspirational instructors, to kimberly for creating this
exceptional haven where one is free to laugh at themselves.

i first discovered yoga while in marathon training with my close childhood
friend. as she was the talented runner who seems to cover the miles so
effortlessly, i became the person to guide us through yoga in order to help us
relax, prevent injury, and give us new perspectives. through the years and
around the world, it was yoga that stuck with me. as i loved to practice
outdoors as well, i would often find many new friends curious as to what i was
doing in random parks in istanbul or paris. in graduate school, yoga was our
means to keep our heads on straight. it was a social activity, but also focused
enough on the self that we all found a meaningful practice. overall, it was the
perfect blend between community and self- discovery. coming to washington has
been one of the greatest challenges of my life, but at tranquil space, i am once
again finding that these two things are large components of my practice. after
years abroad, yoga guided me through in the absence of friends, and once again
yoga has brought me back to their presence. every time i face a new challenge in
yoga, or in life, i find now that my heart is refreshed because it is the
sweetness of friendship with myself, my peers, my community that i cherish the
most.
