"if nothing ever changed,
there'd be no butterflies." ~author unknown |
|
|
while leading a retreat in costa rica last summer, we
went to a popular butterfly garden and for the first
time i saw a caterpiller emerge from its cocoon into a
wet, wobbly butterfly. its next phase was to dry out its
wings so it could fly. a truly remarkable sight.
since 1999 when tranquil space began, i have felt like a
caterpiller on numerous occasions, struggling to dry my
wings and fly. as we embark on this exciting new
journey, i return to the image of the wet, wobbly
butterfly. change is always scary, sexy, risky, and a
constant state despite continual resistance to it.
in buddhism, the concept of impermanence is a gentle
reminder that so much of suffering is brought on by
resisting change. nothing is our lives is unchanging –
our thoughts, emotions, work, relationships. so why the
struggle and grasping for continual control? why do we
stay in the cocoon?
as tranquil space embarks on its next phase in our newly
constructed home on 17th street, i am watching with
anticipation as our team and yoga community adjusts to
all the changes. some sexy, some scary, and some risky –
all a part of the continual flow of life. in college i
read that we regret more the things we don’t do than the
things we do do. that statement serves as a gentle
reminder every time i question emerging from a
comfortable cocoon.
it is with extreme gratitude that i write this month’s
muse and i partake in this upcoming change. i thank you
for supporting the mission of tranquil space during our
many manifestions. may our new phase offer room for us
all to spread our wings and fly. i look forward to
celebrating with you at our
grand opening soiree on may 17.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson

fear. it makes us worry, causes thoughts to churn
uncontrollably and put undo stress on our bodies and minds. on the other hand
instinctual fear can be good, it’s a defense mechanism and helps us protect
ourselves. but that’s not the kind of fear i’m talking about. i’m talking about
the kind that turns your stomach into knots as you wonder what if, what if, what
if?
one of my biggest fears is losing my loved ones. ever since i was a little kid
it was always easier to think that my family would be around forever because i
just couldn’t handle the thought of anything else. i literally thought i would
fall to pieces if anything happened to any of them. then 2008 rolled around and
i was suddenly faced with what i dreaded most. my dog of 11 years suddenly fell
ill and i was told that more than likely i would have to put him down. i was
beyond horrified. miraculously i somehow got through it (with lots of support
from my friends – especially sweet anne who was my rock!) she constantly
reminded me that i had to stay in the present moment and i couldn’t worry about
things that hadn’t happened yet or were beyond my control. i could not let my
fear get the best of me. luckily the pooch was ok and if i had let myself get
crazy with fear the only person that would have been hurt was me.
however, things don’t always work out that way. sometimes our fears come true
and then what? a month after the dog, my grandfather succumbed to cancer. i knew
it was coming but that still didn’t make it any easier. i was extremely close to
him and really had no idea how i would make it through. again, i found such
strength in my practice. even though i was nervous and scared and heartbroken, i
knew it would not be forever. i knew that i had to just stay grounded and
focused in the present moment and not worry about the future or what that might
entail. i couldn’t let my fear of a world without my grandfather in it take
over. i had to honor his memory and allow myself to experience and process what
was going on. although my fear was realized i did not let it debilitate me.
the two examples i’ve given are pretty major but fear doesn’t always have to be
something as quite that dramatic. it can be starting a new job, ending a
relationship, or moving somewhere new. fear is our reaction to change on any
level. so take a moment and think about what you fear. then think about how
staying in the present moment can help you to overcome this fear. once you are
focused on what is actually going on and not what you think might happen you can
begin to deal with whatever issue you are faced with. don’t forget to utilize
this during your practice, especially if something is worrying you or causing
you extra stress.

i am writing this while on my honeymoon in the
galapagos islands, from a "tranquil space" aboard the anchored yacht. i
discovered yoga at tranquil space almost 2 years ago, shortly after moving to dc
and starting work next door at dupont vet clinic. yoga has enhanced my
well-being and quality of life, and introduced me to a very special community of
generous and sincere people. i began my practice to manage stress, as i longed
for a slice of quietude to care for my inner self. i vehemently defended my yoga
time, and prioritized it as a life necessity. taking yoga principles off the mat
helped me tremendously to maintain a sense of calm and compassion in a demanding
workplace and transitioning personal life. the slow but steady improvements have
been a great source of self-confidence and pride. i love measuring success based
on my own advancements rather than comparing to others; the humility and focus
have definitely helped me in other aspects of life. i'm continually amazed that
after months of attempting a pose, it finally just "happens." yoga has
completely transformed my body, strengthened a back and shoulders previously
plagued with chiropractic issues, and changed the way i carry myself. when my
husband (then boyfriend) attended the partners workshop and then a yogaville
retreat, i knew he would enthusiastically try anything with me! after attending
the level one training this year, i felt magically elevated to a new awareness
of many poses and found much more focus on the breath. the phenomenal people i
have met through tranquil space make me feel part of a special and supportive
oasis. kimberly's approach to philanthropic ventures has inspired me to find the
time and energy follow suit, enhancing my own sense of self-worth in our
community. thanks to all who have made yoga and tranquil space such a treasured
part of our lives in dc!

when i first came to tranquil space in july
2004, i had no idea that yoga would become such an important part of my life or
that i would meet such an amazing group of people. over the past four years,
i've met many great people with whom i have become friends, something i never
expected when i first walked through the doors. everyone at tranquil space -
from the teachers to the staff to the yogis i've met just by working at the
front desk - makes the studio a truly special place. i am so grateful to have
been a part of tranquil space as both a staff member and a yogi, and i can't
wait to see what the future brings for the new studio!
