restorative yoga
Indulge yourself this Sunday afternoon with restorative yoga with Siobhan Troy. Turn inward by relaxing into yoga poses over blankets and letting go of any tension held within the body. A restorative practice is beautiful for all levels and allows one to deepen into various poses while holding for many minutes and surrendering to all that arises. Please bring an open heart and desire to open up to the beauty of the moment.
rooftop yoga
Watch the sun set and enjoy the fresh air as we travel through an intermediate vinyasa practice led by Lisa Farmer on the rooftop of an historic building a few blocks from Dupont Circle. Please bring your own yoga mat, a hand towel, water and an eager spirit. Enjoy the setting while taking your practice further during the challenging, yet empowering class overlooking our nation's capital.
yogi night in
An evening devoted to nourishing your inner self through a yoga practice led by Kimberly Wilson, journal writing, clothing and book swapping, tea and treat savoring. We will also have a demonstration of products by The Body Shop that assist yogis' special needs. This will be the first of many "yogi nights in" and we are excited about offering a way to share community, donate items left over from the swap to a local shelter, and play with other yogis in a light setting while coming together to enjoy our practice. A fun, creative way to spend your Saturday night! For those energized by the evening, there's always time for dancing and sushi nearby afterwards.
a hip opening journey
It has been said that the more open the hips, the more open the heart! Join Pary Williamson for an afternoon of hip focusing fun. This workshop will begin with meditation and a flow of various standing asanas to warm the body and gradually open the hips. The breath will be used to assist the opening while allowing the body to go deeper into each pose. The afternoon will end with floor work, using seated and supine poses to relieve tightness and unwanted stored emotions from the hips. You will leave the workshop feeling relaxed and restored throughout while gaining a better understanding of working with your hips!
full moon yoga
The luminous fullness of the moon represents plenitude, abundance, and generous blessings. Join Danielle Polen for a beautiful evening of flowing, meditative movement, featuring guided Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) by candlelight, lunar mantras, and poetic offerings. In contrast to the energetic, heating quality of sun salutations, moon salutations cultivate a sense of calm and rejuvenation, providing an opportunity to shed old layers and reaffirm our highest intentions. Come and celebrate the feeling of being fully alive, as you absorb and integrate the powerful energy and quiet beauty of the full moon.
And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet always in her proper sphere
She's Mistress of the Night.
--Henry David Thoreau
post-natal and mommy and me yoga
This post-natal workshop with Carol Collins will provide moms with the basics of strengthening and de-stressing muscles and emotions overworked by the demands of being a new mother. Use this time to connect again with your bodies by learning how to center your awareness, rebuild your pelvic floor muscles and abdominals. Explore yoga postures that relieve neck and back discomfort, and discover ways to flow through a vinyasa yoga class to maintain balance while strenghtening your legs and lower body. This is also a great way to connect with your new baby and other moms! Bring your baby or come alone. Babies not yet crawling are welcome. Doctor approval is recommended.

yogi of the month
christina gillespie

The other night I pulled up to my yoga mat after a hectic, stressful day at work. As I settled into sukasana, I felt incredible pain in my shoulders and across my back. I could feel my eyebrows furrow, and could barely hold the position. I was surprised that the whole day had passed, and I had not noticed the tension building in my body. Trying desperately to be a good yogi, I began to breathe into the pain. I was hoping that my practice would help melt the tension. Sure enough the vinyasa flow helped focus my mind and loosen my body. By the end of class I lay in savasana my work day a distant memory, and my body totally relaxed.
I have been delighted to experience the benefits of Tranquil Space yoga both on and off the mat. Last summer I began working in a health center for uninsured / underinsured patients in Southeast Washington D.C. A busy clinic setting with limited resources presents endless challenges and frustrations. I have slowly been learning to take my yoga principles into the workplace. A few deep ujjayi breaths have relieved my frustration when supplies run low or equipment fails. Learning to calm my "monkey mind" has helped me focus on the patient in front of me, rather than being distracted by a busy waiting room. I have come to view the clinic as my "precious gem" an opportunity to learn from that which challenges me the most. (I have to remind myself of this one everyday!) The Tranquil Space philosophy has reminded me of the importance of courage, patience, and compassion and most importantly, has helped me to help others.
The physical challenge of a Tranquil Space class is enough to build an army of yogis. But the mental and spiritual influences of Tranquil Space reach far beyond the studio teaching students to carry what we have learned into the world, enriching ourselves and our communities. Thank you, Tranquil Space!

tranquilTeam player of the month
pam font-gabel

I began working at Tranquil Space this past fall, upon the recommendation of a good friend. I immediately liked the environment and people surrounding me,so when a full time shift became available, I jumped at the chance. Ann (Wallin) was one of the first, and most welcoming people I met at Tranquil Space, so I owe gratitude to her for her kindness and super-training! I must say that sometimes (as most of you), working the desk can be stressful. I always try to be as calm, yet inviting and efficient as possible. When you smile at people, it does wonders, especially b/c yours is usually the first face they see upon arrival. Thanks to everyone for making Tranquil Space what it is and for sharing your gifts with us.

reflective closing thoughts

|
""Wherever you go for the rest of your life - you're always in the middle of the universe and the circle is always around you. Everyone who walks up to you has entered that sacred space, and it's not an accident. Whatever comes into the space is there to teach you."
~ Pema Chodron
|
|
As many of you know, we are now approaching our fifth month of not being in a space we were to occupy in January. Many of the readings I do at the end of class and the quote above remind me that everything happens for a reason and our challenges are our teachers. I realize that, honor that, respect the whole concept BUT sometimes feel that I'm tired of learning lessons and just wish contractors would show up, inspectors would forgo the requirement of a "mop sink" and approve what was signed off on in January, and that our new space would become reality.
However, I also know deep down that our challenges are our best teachers. There's another quote by Pema Chodron from The Wisdom of No Escape which emphasizes that these teachers/challenges will continue to show up until we've learned their lesson, the lesson they are put there to teach. And, once we've learned their lesson, they will appear as warm-hearted companions on our spiritual path. Ah, so the contractors and inspectors are my lesson (albeit, I'm so OVER the lesson) and this situation is here to teach me something.
This concept is a beautiful way to reconstruct challenges, continued obstacles and disappointments placed in one's path. It turns these roadblocks into lessons that will ultimately change who we are, allow personal growth and, finally, help smooth our path towards future equanimity. Over the past few months, I continue to be drawn to and find myself sharing these thoughts at the end of class but resisting the concept playing into our current scenario. How can there possibly be a lesson in this insane bureaucracy, continued change in rules and lack of responsibility on so many parts out of our control? However, as the days continue to pass, I am finding, reluctantly, that there truly is a pearl being carved out of this challenge.
I look forward to sharing this pearl with everyone who has shown such support and dedication throughout the months as our new space unfolds and we're able to delight in our practice at our new tranquil space. Thank you for your continued devotion to your practice. I am constantly grateful for all I learn through teaching the art of yoga both on and off the mat.
 | Much love and gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson
