asana and yogi of the month
big toe stretch
The benefits of this pose include developing balance, focus, confidence and stability, while opening the heart, deepening the breath, and awakening the hamstrings.
yogi of the month
This month Tranquil Space honors Trent Nichols who writes the following of his experience:
For the last several years, my only form of exercise has been either sculling or crew on the Potomac. Rowing is an amazing sport - it is both great exercise and very medatative. EVERY stroke is unique. Unfortunately, rowing is primarily a summertime sport. I was just left with indoor rowing during the winter. I wanted something more. Something challenging - both physically and mentally. My introduction to yoga first occurred in November of 2001. A very old friend of mine, who had left DC for South Beach Miami to get away from DC politics and to find new meaning in life, had become a very well respected yoga instructor there. I hadn't seen Kinga in 3 years - her transformation was amazing. I took one class under her instruction and I has hooked - and sore for the next three days! When I returned to DC, I found Kimberly's Tranquil Space.
One of the aspects of yoga that most intrigues me is that there is SO much to learn. Yoga is a tradition that is thousands of years old, both a philosophy and a practice, a tradition of both mind and body. One of the many welcome aspects of Kimberly's Tranquil Space is that it is a very open place, where participants are allowed, rather than required, to observe, learn, and practice yoga at their own speed; to focus on their own needs, whether it is simply stretching and strengthening their bodies, or their minds. None of the teachers at Tranquil Space attempt, at any time, to move or "adjust" you in a direction you don't want to go. What you will find is a place and people who embody the gentle, open philosophy and practice of yoga.
I feel very fortunate to have found Kimberly's Tranquil Space (it is so tempting to say "MY Tranquil Space"). One last note - whatever you do, don't miss the tea and cookies after class! That is a unique experience in and of itself.

kimberly's closing thoughts

"Wherever you go for the rest of your life - you're always in the middle of the universe and the circle is always around you. Everyone who walks up to you has entered that sacred space, and it's not an accident. Whatever comes into the space is there to teach you."
~ Pema Chodron

During a recent teacher training with one of my favorite vinyasa yoga teachers, I asked her what transformed her teaching to the next level. She replied that the Shambhala Buddhism training evolved her teaching in amazing ways. So upon my return from the training, I immediately and eagerly enrolled in Level 1 "The Art of Being Human" which focuses on our basic goodness, self-compassion, and lojong (mind training) through meditation which I completed last weekend. I must confess that although it was painful mentally and physically to sit for hours and be so out of touch with what was going on outside, I found a sense of relief from the process. My hips are STILL sore but my mind is accutely aware of the small things; noticing the way herbal tea tastes, feeling my feet on the yoga mat, sensing the feelings of tightness or openness in my body, observing emotions that come up throughout the day.
According to Pema Chodron, "The basic notion of lojong is that we can make friends with what we reject, what we see as 'bad' in ourselves and in other people. If we begin to live in this way, something in us that may have been buried for a long time begins to ripen. This is referred to as 'bodhichitta', or awakened heart. It's something that we already have but usually have not yet discovered. Our confusion and misery come from not knowing that the pot of gold is right here and from always looking for it somewhere else."
The words and notions of the Shambhala training are beautiful and thought-provoking. How to live in this world fully, open to all that transpires and feel the present moment without judgment or desire to be elsewhere? I love the concept and am exploring ways to implement my first training in preparation for Level 2, "Birth of the Warrior" - once my hips feel normal again! I wish you an experience of complete acceptance of who you are, the sense of limitless possibility you possess and the motivation to explore ways to experience life fully this May both off and on the yoga mat. Begin by bringing this sense of awareness and acceptance to your practice and watch what unfolds.
Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
