is no concentration" - bhagavad gita

after calling the studio “yoga at kimberly’s”
during our humble beginnings, i began to crave a name that evoked more of an
experience. while exploring options with a group of girls, i came upon “tranquil
space” in 2000 and have loved taking the concept of tranquility into all we
offer. tranquil space has been created to serve as a respite, a haven for busy
beings craving some peace and nurturing within their fast-paced lives.
when we moved into our arlington studio last fall, i received a lot of feedback
on how much everyone loved the color scheme – golds and rich earth tones. hmmmm,
guess the pink, mint green, and purple walls have worn their welcome? my beau
says it feels like “welcome to my sorority dorm room.” well, i did win the
tri-delta room decorating contest my senior year! however, i hoped i’d moved on
from that era.
as we plan the décor and vibe for our new tranquil space on
17th street,
i’m describing the look as “zen princess.” sure no one has any idea what i’m
talking about – i like mystery – but i’m hopeful that blending zen motif with
chandeliers and our colorful accents (not full walls, but accents!) will somehow
come together in a streamlined style that exudes tranquility.
tranquility is a way of life. as a girl constantly on-the-go i’m always seeking
a dose of it. lately i’ve found tranquility in daily cupcakes, soy chai lattes,
and meditation. where do you find it? how can you get more of it?
spring is upon us – thank goodness – and this is always a fun time to reflect on
blooming. as tranquil space gears up to bloom into a new home, we’re doing a lot
of spring cleaning by sorting files, tossing former must-haves that have passed
their prime, and organizing what lies behind the closet curtains. to embody
tranquility, explore what lies hidden, and needs to be tossed or sorted. embrace
march’s theme of discovery and practice it toward yourself. get ready
to bloom. replace old habits with new tranquility-inducing habits. surround
yourself with more tranquility-filled friends. read more tranquility-producing
texts.
we look forward to blooming with you in march. join our spring blossom 20-day
challenge, volunteer, savor a cupcake, sit for 5 minutes a day, write in your
journal, sip green tea, get your yoga on – find tranquility!
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson

when i was little i wanted to be a check-out girl at k-mart.
the smart red smocks, brimming toy aisles, and illuminated cash registers
enchanted and delighted me. each visit i’d hide under clothes racks, trace the
edges of cellophane wrapped packages, and dip my fingers into the display bins
at the back of the tool department. for a six year old, this was magical stuff.
by sixth grade, however, i reasoned that a lifetime supply of hardware and
barbie accessories was a shallow premise for a life’s work. i shifted my
ambitions to electoral politics—president of the united states to be specific—in
order to help others. my progressive social agenda promised to eliminate
everything from poverty to animal cruelty. but a brief stint of as our class
president taught me that politics had its own cruelties. i’d have to find
another route to a life of service and contemplation.
while i abandoned my goal of elected office, i did not reject my initial intent.
i still seek a life that gives to others, and i still long for the childlike joy
of sensory exploration. practicing and now teaching yoga has helped me discover
that service, sensation, and wonder can all be part of the same mission.
as we come to our mats this month, let’s savor a sense of discovery in our
practice. indulge in the delight of each movement and each moment—the lift of
the collarbones, the deepening of the breath, the stilling of the mind. it is
this self-discovery, which yoga so beautifully facilitates, that in time reveals
our paths and our passions.
what are you are exploring? what delights you? and how can this discovery enrich
your life both on and off the yoga mat?
my discoveries ultimately led to neither the toy aisle nor the oval office, but
to a path unknown to me as a six year old. as we come together this month we
each have a different path to explore. let’s delight in discovering them
together.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

my first exposure to yoga was as a young boy.
johnny carson had a "yogi" who folded himself inside an impossibly small box.
fascinating, yet totally weird (in texas, anything non-texan is suspect). fast
forward to my first classes at ts in 2003 where i realized that i had somehow
picked up yoga through the years and was quite surprised to learn that the
postures had ancient sanskrit names, not just "that arm stretch my tennis coach
taught me." with this realization, i dropped my perception of yoga as being
"weird" and felt very much at home. however, when i first took classes, i was
really doing it for somebody else. when she lost interest in yoga, my practice
followed. when i restarted again in 2006 i did it for myself and that has made
all the difference.
i am now drawn to yoga because i enjoy the discipline of a dedicated practice,
of overcoming the mental and physical challenges. i am drawn to tranquil space
because the staff has that perfect balance of friendliness and sarcasm (ala
southwest airlines) and the teachers are giving and bring a variety of styles.
my practice has shown me humor (yes kimberly, my hamstrings are definitely
"awakening"), humility (tadasana on your tiptoes with your eyes closed is not
that easy), a deeper calm, and new words like ahimsa and satya that are now part
of my mindset as well as my vocabulary. it has exposed my flaws, yet given me a
path to improving them. to me, tranquil space is just that: a place where i can
relax and enjoy the tranquility of my practice because there is a sense of
family or, as diborah is fond of saying, "i feel like i am practicing with my
friends". thanks kimberly, i am looking forward to a nice pot of lapsang
souchang at the new studio.

i thank you all for the honor of being chosen
for the tranquility team player of the month.
i "discovered" yoga in denver three years ago, but didnt really apply it to my
life until i moved to washington. i have learned through the teachings at
tranquil space to use the harmony and balance i found on the mat in my day to
day dealings off the mat. i want to say that my life before yoga was filled with
drugs and alcohol and i did not know who or what i was, nor did i care to know.
when becoming sober, i soon realized that i had no idea how to deal with the
little things in life that were common to all, and that is when yoga became a
path to a better life. i know that without it, i would probably be lost.
i have a beautiful life now, i am the director of an important historic house
museum ( a job i would not have had unless i had learned to listen to my inner
voice) i have an adopted family here and most of the members are people i have
met through my practice at tranquil space.
i feel blessed daily, and have learned through yoga how to be grateful and share
my joy with others. thank you for helping me become the crazy, happy, caring and
free person you see today.
