“i change myself, i change the world.”
~ gloria anzaldua
|
welcome to women's history month! notice
during your next yoga practice, when you are being challenged to do one more
chaturanga or to soften into the asana of the month, do you become frustrated
with the request or experience gratitude for being challenged? i see accepting
challenge as being synonymous with empowerment. your ability to push edges both
on and off the yoga mat makes for a less stagnant and more dynamic existence.
spend some time this month reflecting on areas in your life that feel stagnant
and in need of change. it's spring and time for rebirth. for example, how long
have you been complaining about your job, relationship, or living situation?
what small steps can you take to begin making changes in these areas? or is the
shift needed simply a change in attitude and perspective?
empower yourself with the recognition that you are in your current situation by
choice, and getting out of any position that no longer serves you is also a
choice. as we all know, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single
step. let your desire for change jump-start this journey today.
being a yogi is to be mindful of actions on a larger scale — a more global view.
how can you assist in a continuation of freedom for all people? for example,
donate to an international women's fund, volunteer at a domestic violence or
homeless shelter, start a business catered to women, read a book about a
powerful woman, mentor a fellow female, participate in a big sister program,
head a fundraiser that supports a cause close to your heart, create a community
for like-minded people.
celebrate the women in your life. celebrate the woman you were. celebrate the
woman you've become. celebrate the woman you strive to be. celebrate the women
who paved the path for your freedom. may march shower you with pride, gratitude
for those that challenge and empower you, and an activist attitude for improving
those areas that aren't at full potential, both individually and globally.
use march to bloom what has been dormant and germinating below the surface all
winter.
blooming
with you,
kimberly wilson

march is a funny month, with one foot in
winter and the other in spring. this change from one season to the next isn’t
always smooth, as our recent weather reminds us. one day it’s 60 degrees and
sunny, the next we’re buried in several inches of snow and ice. this got me
thinking about changes in general. my life will change forever in just 3 short
months. if you’ve seen me around the studio recently, you probably know that i’m
a soon-to-be first-time mom. like most of life’s changes, this is exciting,
scary, and overwhelming. i have absolutely no idea what it’s like to be a
mother, and no way of knowing until i am one. but yoga has taught me not to fear
the unknown, but to embrace the entire experience. i look forward to all this
new adventure offers and the many rewards and challenges of motherhood.
my yoga practice will change along with the rest of my life. in lots of small
ways, for sure. maybe i won’t make it to many weekday evening classes after
work, but instead i’ll get to share my practice with my little guy at baby and
me classes. and it will change in big ways, too. my yoga practice has taught me
to be more mindful, breathe more deeply, and fully experience each moment before
it passes. being a parent demands these qualities, and in turn, will help me
nurture them even more in my life and my practice.
this spring, i hope your yoga practice is a catalyst, and a companion, for the
changes that await you. namaste.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

when i first moved to dc about five years ago,
i was in the middle of the most tumultuous period of my life to date. i’d made a
few major life decisions and was about to start my first ‘real’ job. i was
moving away from home and family for the first time, to a city where i knew no
one. i was scared – scared to be on my own, scared i’d made the wrong choice,
and most of all, scared i would fail. but a small part of me was also
exhilarated; here was my chance to do something new and different, to become
someone different. i decided that i was going to try new things, and yoga was
one of them. i picked tranquil space for my first attempt at yoga because of the
name – if there was anything i really needed at that moment, it was a tranquil
space. from my first class, i was hooked. i felt challenged physically and all
the clamor of doubts and worries quieted for a full hour for the first time in
months. when i left i felt calm and energized, and i’ve continued to come back
to tranquil space for that feeling. the pleasant environment, warm and
compassionate teachers, and sense of community at tranquil space have always
made me feel welcome. as i’ve become more comfortable with my life here in dc,
the fear has largely been replaced by the more normal stresses day to day
living, but yoga has continued to be my soft place to land after a hard day.

"there is only one journey. going inside
yourself." rainer maria rilke
who would have guessed that stepping into
tranquil space years ago would allow me to do just that -- go inside myself in a
way that i had never thought possible. i had been practicing yoga on and off for
years, but it was this place, this space that became a huge turning point in my
life, and for that i am eternally grateful. at the time i didn't know it, and
looking back now, i realize it's not one particular moment, but rather a series
of moments that have happened, and continue to happen. this cozy studio, the
people who work and practice here quickly felt like 'home' -- in a city where
people move in and out daily, this was immensely important to me.
no moment is like the last, no breath is like
the breath before it, and every moment is truly an opportunity to be mindfully
present. that is the beauty of being a part of this incredible team - i am
grateful to be learning from them & with them on a daily basis..thank you all!
i'm also so happy to be putting my energy into the mix, it comes from a place of
compassion and with the vision of making the world a better place for us all.
