Welcome to women's history month and a continual celebration of being female at Tranquil Space. There has never been a better time to be a woman. We owe so much to those who have gone before us, who challenged traditional norms to offer us a world filled with opportunity. A month devoted to honoring women serves as a beautiful reminder of the abundance of choices available to all willing to push edges in order to create opportunity. My mantra for the New Year has been, "edges pushed, boundaries held." I believe this ties in well to a muse focused on the celebration of women. In order to continue the work of the pioneers who paved the road to freedom we so cavalierly possess, we must be conscious of our role in continuing this movement. I write this statement lightly, with lots of room for interpretation as we are all at varying degrees of involvement in the ever-evolving definition of being feminist. However, I view it all as coming down to choice, opportunity and a feeling of empowerment on an individual and global scale.
Notice during your next yoga practice, when you are being challenged to do one more chaturanga, to hold a balancing pose a few breaths longer or to soften into the asana of the month, do you become frustrated with the request or experience gratitude for being challenged? I see accepting challenge as being synonymous with empowerment. Your ability to push edges both on and off the yoga mat makes for a less stagnant and more dynamic existence. Spend some time this month reflecting on areas in your life that feel stagnant, in need of change. For example, how long have you been complaining about your job, relationship, or living situation? What small steps can you take to begin making changes in these areas? Or is the shift needed simply a change in attitude and perspective? Empower yourself with the realization that you are in your current situation by choice and getting out of any position that no longer serves you is also by choice. As we all know, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Let your acknowledgement of a desire for change jump-start this journey today. In addition, bring awareness to areas in your life that beg for you to exert power and hold boundaries. The ability to say no, guilt free, to a request by another is a challenge for many women. Putting the needs of others before your own is a sure way to lose momentum in your own life goals. Remember the importance of holding boundaries in your relationships and life experiences in order to conserve your power for pushing the edges of your own choosing.
Being a yogi is to be mindful of actions on a larger scale how what we do affects others. Use the awareness you brought to the areas in your individual world to a more grandiose view. In light of this month's focus, how can you as a woman, or lover of women, honor the progress made in opportunities over the past century and assist in its continuation? For example, donate to an international women's fund, volunteer at a domestic violence shelter, start a business catered to women, read a book about a powerful woman, mentor a fellow female, participate in a big sister type program, head a fundraiser that supports a female-focused cause close to your heart, create a community for like-minded women. The options are endless, and for that my dear yogi, we owe much gratitude and dedication to those who helped create these choices.
Celebrate the women in your life. Celebrate the woman you were. Celebrate the woman you've become. Celebrate the woman you strive to be. May March shower you with pride, strong feelings of gratitude for those in your life that challenge and empower you, and an activist attitude for improving those areas that aren't at full potential individually and globally. Act on the opportunities pioneers of the women's movement have given you.

zoe lane

I have always known that yoga is extremely good for me, and that I could benefit tremendously if I practiced often. Mentally, it's often difficult for me to quiet my mind and be in the moment. And physically I struggle with some major inflexibility! However, with my work schedule, and other commitments, it was difficult to find the time to practice regularly. I also hadn't found a place to practice that felt just right for me. That's what I've found in Tranquil Space.
I moved to D.C. recently from a place I loved. The stress of moving, finding a new job, and leaving a special place made it all the more important for me to pursue a regular yoga practice. I found Tranquil Space through a new friend, and it has become an important part of my new life. The soothing environment makes it easy for me to quiet my mind, and the wonderful instructors and classes have provided me with the encouragement I need to face my physical challenges, accept where I am, and explore my edge. I am grateful to have found Tranquil Space, and for all the positive things it has brought to my life. Namaste!
