vinyasa flow and sound part 1, with simon park and thomas flanagan standing poses and arm balances
Yoga is a sacred dance of complementary forces; breath/movement, strength/fluidity, earth and sky. Nada yoga is the yoga of sound..... union and harmony through attuning one's self with sound. This two part workshop will explore the power of beautiful music upon our yoga practice.
Part 1 of the workshop will focus on the creative sequencing of standing poses and arm balances. An eclectic Vinyasa practice blending Ashtanga flow/rhythm, Iyengar alignment principles, and Thai massage partnerwork, will be accompanied by Indian classical music, sitar, and world music.
A special section of the workshop will be devoted to Sound Vibrational Healing. In this session, healing sounds from the didgeridoo, sitar, bells, singing bowls, drums, and shells are played over the chakras to produce a meditative and ethereal effect.
The workshop(s) will be taught in the format of an extended vinyasa class, with Thai-massage partnerwork and beautiful live music. You are welcome to join one or both of these practices.

kirtan with wynne paris
Join us for 2 hours of music and Kirtan chanting, offered in a call and response format in which the leader sings a phrase and the group sings it back over and over again. The energy and the pace of the chant builds according to the inspiration of the moment as the mind quiets and the heart begins to soar. Kirtan is the stillness of meditation, the lovingness of an open heart, a permeating breath of harmony, a form of devotional Indian chanting singing the Sanskrit names of Indian Deities. Harmonization through chanting, breathing and meditating together, this music will help to bring one to an inner experience of connection with God.
"Music alone can take you to the highest," Swami Vivekananda.
For the past 7 years world beat musician Wynne Paris has split his time between Northern California and Washington DC, learning the music of yoga, producing new age music and developing a musical style that he describes as "Raga Rock". As a Bhakti, or devotional singer, his influences range from Indian and Tibetan folk music, blues and jazz, and center on Kirtan; a devotional form of singing that he performs at yoga centers, raves, and festivals and gatherings. When performing he integrates ecstatic and holistic expressions of music and mixes tabla-based loops, Indian instruments, chanting, an innovative guitar style, and a few notes on the Sarod (an esoteric Indian instrument) to produce a spiritually funky and uplifting sound.
living your practice with darren main
It is one thing to speak of lofty spiritual principles and ancient philosophies. It is yet another to be able to incorporate those principles into one's daily life. It has been said that this is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Join Darren, author of Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic for a one-hour yoga practice and a talk on how to live your practice. In Darren's talks and lectures, common experience is used to explore the time-tested practice of yoga and to demonstrate how those ideas are relevant in today's modern world. Like his writing, Darren's style is light and fun, but always poignant. The talk is a great opportunity to learn more about eastern philosophy and gain a deeper understanding of how the practice of yoga can transform your entire life.

developing a home practice with darren main
When we come to our first yoga class, everything is foreign and difficult. The experience is filled with strange poses, odd breathing and weird chanting. But after a few classes we start to settle in and it begins to feel more natural. In just a few months we can feel our bodies moving in a new way and old injuries beginning to disappear. Most importantly, the mind becomes more calm and life becomes more peaceful.
It is at this point that we are ready for the next step in the evolution of yoga - building a home practice. In this workshop we will explore the basic elements of a hatha yoga practice and learn how to sequence those elements in a way that will be most supportive. We will also look at techniques for developing a practice that is best suited for your individual needs. Participants will leave with a unique and personal outline for a home practice to help them get started.
You will learn about:
The Elements of a Practice
Sequenceing
Planning Skills
Tips for Regular Practice
Preventing Injury
Customizing a Practice for Unique Needs
Listening to Your Body

asana of the month
marichyasana
Marichyasana is the asana of the month. Benefits: this pose has 4 variations and serves as a forward bend, twist, and hip opener while awakening the spine, hamstrings, and hips through breath and focus. This pose is dedicated to Marichi who was a great sage and the son of Brahma.
yogi of the month
debra perlson

I moved here 5 months ago and after checking out a few studios in the area, found my home at Tranquil Space. Kimberly inspires me with her ability to create such an amazing place while at the same time keeping it real for herself.
My first yoga class was 4 years ago when I was living in San Francisco. One day, I found myself with time to kill near a yoga studio. I had always been curious about this "yoga" thing, and had my gym clothes with me, so it seemed like a perfect invitation. An hour and a half and 110 degrees later, I completed my first Bikram class. I walked out sweating, but glowing and feeling pretty great! I soon started going more regularly.
My initial experiences with yoga were definitely more physical than anything else. I felt stronger, more flexible, etc. But, then these other "things" started happening (both in and out of class) whereby I was developing an increasing sense of self awareness. I began really noticing my breath and about how it amazingly, directly affected my state of mind!
I think that before yoga, I was on a path that was more unconsciously controlled by external circumstances and external satisfaction. Now, I am also learning look inwards (who would have known!) to search for and understand what brings me true joy. Yoga is helping me practice to be more of who I truly am-which means that I am doing some unlearning of old patterns while adding some lightness to my life.
Interestingly, as I become more dedicated to practicing yoga, my commitment is also deepening to living in greater harmony with the world around me. This extends to experimenting more with an earth-sustainable diet. Concepts like ahisma and detachment are definitely capturing more of my attention. I feel deeply drawn to promoting the concept of all beings everywhere being happy and free. What could be better then that! As far as detachment . . . that concept has always been a little confusing for me, but I recently read a great book, Soul Mate by Deepak Chopra whose description of detachment made it a bit more clear:
"You seek detachment not so that nothing can touch you, but so that you have enough space to find out what is real".
Now I am in teacher training at Tranquil Space. Last night in class Cyndi Lee asked the class to think about why we want to teach yoga. For me, it has to do with my sense that if more people on this earth were to have some yoga in their lives, we would have a better chance at living in harmony-and if I could contribute to that happening on any level all the better!

tranquilTeam player of the month
katharine tillman

I came to Tranquil Space after six months on the road. I'd previously
practiced yoga in New York City, but the hitch-hiking, camping,
panhandling, and compulsive journal-writing which defined the period I
spent before settling in Washington really hadn't left much room for
taking classes (and I must admit that it is significantly more difficult
to maintain a home practice when one doesn't have a home). I stumbled onto
this studio and its studio assistant program, oddly enough, while trying
to find a job. Soon after, I walked into my first Yoga 2 class with
Kimberly.
After a half-year yoga hiatus, I was a mess. Twenty minutes into class my
face was dripping with sweat, my breathing was completely off, and my
body, once so supple, was just flat out refusing to do the things it had
done months before. I was exhausted and sore, my chatarunga could have been
more aptly named a feeble collapse onto the floor, and the noises going on
in the back of my throat resembled a hyperventilating freight train much
more than the ocean or even Darth Vader. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little,
but in any case, it wasn't pretty.
And THIS is her story about why Tranquil Space is so wonderful, you must
be wondering? Yes, it is. The reason Tranquil Space is so wonderful is
that I left that class feeling completely serene, calm, content better
than I'd felt in months.
Instead of shying away from her fumbling new student, Kimberly lavished me
with personal attention, adjustments, and encouragement. Despite the fact
that my own focus was off and my flow wasn't quite flowing, I was not
blind to the fact that the energy in that room was amazing, and that
however poorly I might perform the poses, I was part of that. I didn't
know anyone there, but after class was over, I felt connected. I felt like
I wasn't alone. Savasana was complete surrender, and never had little
cat-shaped cookies and herbal tea out of a tiny paper cup tasted so
absolutely amazing. Kimberly assured me I'd be back to my old flexible
self in no time, and I floated all the way home.
Since then, I've improved a bit, and gone through the level one teacher
training, studio assisted regularly, and helped out with all sorts of odds
and ends. I've taken numerous classes, some on good days and some not so
great, but I've never left Tranquil Space without feeling much better than
I felt when I came in.

reflective closing thoughts

|
"March arrives, the last hurrah of winter and the first whisper of spring. Slowly our spirits awaken, along with the natural world, from a long winter's slumber. Branches that just days ago were bare, now blossom with new growth. Deep within we feel stirrings of hope. Turn over the earth in the inner garden." ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach
|
|
Spring is a beautiful time of the year to evaluate our practice of yoga and life. The dead of winter begins to come alive and flowers press up from the barren earth. This is the season when the world around us is blooming with freshness, life and vitality, and why shouldn't we, too? One of my favorite post-practice readings is, "Life is profoundly cyclical, the wheel never stops turning. No matter how cold the winter, spring always comes. Why despair over only part of the cycle?" I find this so appropriate to reinforce the ever changing cycle in the mood of one's yoga and life practice.
This time of rebirth and growth from dormancy in nature can serve as a reminder of approaching the practice of life and yoga in a similar manner. Notice what has been brewing deep inside over the past few months of hibernation. Any hidden desires for change, new challenges, opportunities or adventures? Use this new season as a chance to experiment with these dormant desires, allowing them to blossom with the outside world. Become aware of how bringing this new sense of adventure and play to the yoga mat can help your practice of life and yoga explode with possibility.
