"yoga changes the way you
feel, the way you look at things, and the way you
interpret what’s going on" ~
erich schiffman |
|
|
considering my passion for blending yoga and daily
life, i felt it appropriate to muse on the yoga of
making challenging decisions and handling life's daily
twists and turns. having a tendency toward self-induced
drama, i often think to myself "how much more can i
handle?" as i wipe my brow. and then - poof - i'm given
yet another interesting challenge.
life is full of these lessons/opportunities/challenges
and despite the struggle, we are always sure to come
away stronger because of them. after making a
challenging and saddening decision recently, i took a
moment to reflect on how lokah samastah sukino
bhavantu applied to this situation. the mantra
translates to "may all beings everywhere be happy and
free. may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own
life contribute in some way to that happiness and to
that freedom for all." yoga teaches us to be grounded,
fearless, strong, flexible, aware, loving,
compassionate, reflective - all sorts of yummy stuff.
it's easy to be all of the above when life is going
smoothly. but how to embody yoga when things are hard,
when presented with tough choices, when coming up
against yet another obstacle? THIS is living your yoga.
by remembering that our thoughts, words, and actions
have an effect on others, it makes all our decisions
even more powerful. over the past many months i have
been inundated with decisions to make - from tile to
flooring to staffing to financing to paint colors to
interviewing. these daily decisions and challenges are
our yoga practice. what is the point of a beautiful crow
pose if we are tormented inside? one of my favorite
teachers states that you can tell if you are progressing
as a yogi by how much peace you are experiencing in life
(not how long you can hold headstand). i love that
gentle reminder and i reflect on it often.
when betrayed, hurt, let down, confused, or exhausted, i
encourage you to explore what the lesson is that
underlies the challenge. is there a flower that will
blossom through the unsightly soil? when one door
closes, another is sure to open. letting go is never
easy. change is never easy. making tough decisions is
never easy. staying authentic to oneself is never easy.
but THIS is our yoga. trust in it and stay connected
with your core. you'll emerge even stronger. namaste.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson

i laid out my mat with hesitation as i wondered about my
decision to try on a new challenge in my yoga practice. sitting still on my mat,
conserving my energy and suspending apprehension, i focused on the impending
arrival of my friend who would take the class with me. class started. somewhere
along the way in suryanamaskar a, at a pace i had never encountered, i wondered
once again about my decision to leap onto this step in my yoga journey. yet with
steady effort, and faith in my teachers and in my commitment to my yoga practice
come what may, savasana emerged: settling thoughts, soothing apprehension, and
saluting joy.
i would return again and again, and
each time i would be inspired by the – sometimes unique,
and sometimes predictable – challenges that I faced on
the mat, all with the comfort and joy of knowing that I
have a lifetime to take the journey.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

my refuge
life is filled with stress, but it’s also filled with beauty, such as home-made
steak fries, my partner’s blue eyes, and the team at tranquil space.
each morning, monday through friday, i rush out of the house to sit at my desk
and sift through an endless list of emails that need immediate attention. the
only diversion is preparing or delivering a presentation of my design work to a
client. all day long, i must win new clients, please a client, and deliver on
time. clients can be very needy and of course have stress in their own lives. so
even the simplest inconvenience can cause stress at work. the phones (4 lines!)
do not stop ringing, and deadlines are weekly. most days i hardly have time for
a lunch break.
then the work day ends, i hop on my bike, ride down pennsylvania avenue, pass by
the white house (talk about stress) and arrive at tranquil space. i am
immediately greeted with cheerful smiles everywhere. at last, a tranquil space.
i know the mind is supposed to remain clear while on the mat during practice,
but i must confess that some of my best projects have come to me while i am in
practice. that’s right: practicing with fellow yogis at tranquil space not only
improves my body and soul, but it also greatly improves my creative mind and,
consequently, my design portfolio.
a few years ago, a friend gave me a gift certificate to classes at tranquil
space. she highly recommended vinyasa to relieve stress and broaden creativity.
i was skeptical at first. i made excuses; i had no time to attend yoga classes.
she insisted we go and, well, i’ve been coming back ever since.
truly, the clouds part at tranquil space. i’m incredibly grateful for the
amazingly passionate teachers. people do not believe me when i tell them every
class at tranquil space ends with a nap, a cookie and a cup of freshly brewed
tea.

i can't believe it took this long.
tranquil space enters its tenth year this september, but this will be a first.
no, not because some freshly hired guy suddenly ended up being named the team
player of the month... no, this date in tranquil space history shall be
remembered because this it's the first time its newsletter will include a quote
from green bay packers coach vince lombardi...
the achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of
each individual.
now, i think lombardi swiped this from whoever came up with that line about the
whole being greater than the sum of its parts, but i'll save my "lombardi was a
flaming plagiarist" screed for the next time i'm invited to write for the
newsletter (which, i suspect shall occur sometime in late 2032).
there is absolutely no way any organization can succeed, either as a sports
franchise or as a socially responsible business, without the efforts of everyone
on board. in our case, this includes everyone on staff and every member of the
tranquil space community. as we faced the challenge of our move from p street to
17th street, i was amazed by the efforts of our team, many of whom stayed well
past their bedtime during the packing and unpacking process. granted, these are
the same people who staged a mini-intervention over the staggering amount of red
bull i ingested that week, but i was (mostly) touched by their concern...
in addition to the team members that gave us a hand during the move, there were
several members of the tranquil space yoga community that offered their time and
encouragement as well. i shouldn't be surprised by this support, but i have to
confess it was an important boost during that time, and yet another example of
how tranquil space is more than just four walls, a roof and some yoga... it's a
community that can achieve tremendous things through the collective efforts of
every person involved. i am truly honored to be a part of tranquil space.

greetings
from tranquility boutique manager marq few
now
that we have settled in our new digs, we have been
receiving a few restocks and new items.
mats, mats and more mats! new in the boutique are
manduka eko lite mats. these ultra light mats contain no
oil-based products and decompose at the end of their
durable life. they come in five vibrant colors – moss,
ember, lava, sand and aqua. also, be sure to check out
the restocks of jade and agoy mats.
boutique trivia - did you know that the company name
agoy is yoga backwards? speaking of agoy, we just
received their ultra-cool faux leather mat bags that
come in black and brown. you can use them as a messenger
bag during the day and then simply unzip the straps on
the bottom to carry your mat to evening practice.
for the minimalist yogi, you've been asking for them and
they are in. what is that marq - what are you talking
about? carrying straps for your mat! no need for a bag,
just pull the velcro strap around your mat and you are
ready to head to class.
be present practice shorts for men have arrived in
copper, azure, graphite and red. we also have the kona
pant for women. these long shorts fall a bit below the
knee and come in very cool colors for summer. check out
the beautiful deep red and the cool green apple and
sweet violet.
finally, please be patient as we try to acquire more
sigg water bottles. they have been so popular that we
have had a hard time ordering the bottles that we like.
while we wait, we are researching how to get tranquil
space custom sigg bottles. keep your fingers crossed!
