“i choose to rise up out of that storm and see that in moments of desperation, fear, and helplessness, each of us can be a rainbow of hope, doing what we can to extend ourselves in kindness and grace to one another. and i know for sure that there is no them . . . there's only us.” ~ oprah winfrey
the creation of the tranquil space foundation
the purpose of tranquil space can best be summed up with a mission of helping others find their own tranquil space within. as a yoga studio with hopes of enhancing lives on and off the yoga mat, i am embarking on our next journey with the creation of the tranquil space foundation a public charity with hopes of going above and beyond our current studio charity efforts to reach even more people and offer tranquility into their lives.
ahhh, the evolutionary process: seven years ago this month i went through my first teacher training. a few months later, with visions of special strangers huddled around my living room's fireplace drinking tea, doing yoga and connecting, i hung fliers around the neighborhood announcing yoga in dupont. this single act was the launch pad for this young girl from oklahoma working as a paralegal with a psychology degree. thus, tranquil space began.
over the years we've grown to encompass trunk shows, colorful studio décor, lifestyle-focused "off the mat" workshops, the tranquiliT boutique, expansion to bethesda and downtown, creativity circles, the tranquiliT collection, four main charities, and hip tranquil chick. my initial reason for starting the studio continues to expand with yoga and tranquility at the helm. i believe that yoga for the sake of yoga is powerful, but not as powerful as sprinkling it throughout your lifestyle.
social consciousness has always been an important component to us with the numerous charities we support. our four main charities are the humane society, arbor day foundation, my sister's place, and the fund for women artists. for example, this month we'll plant a tree in a damaged national forest for each pass purchased.
with the new tranquil space foundation, we will add more to our current successes with our deserving charities and events like doga and girl's night in. tranquil space foundation will continue what we have already started through tranquil space a movement toward bringing the tranquility of yoga to everyday life. the foundation vision includes more special fundraising events, scholarships to students and teachers, direct service by taking yoga to special populations, and a strong board that resonates with the vision of creating a tranquil space within our society. on top of all of this, tranquil space foundation will itself be a public charity, giving another outlet for members of the community to make tax-deductible donations to the cause.
if you know someone you would like to nominate to serve on the board of the new tranquil space foundation, or would like to share any ideas on how you see it serving our community, please e-mail me at kimberly@tranquilspace.com. i would love to hear your feedback.
my hope is that tranquil space serves to inspire all who enters its doors. life is lived by stepping strategically outside of one's comfort zone to head in the direction of your dreams, while ultimately serving others simultaneously. continue your exploration of yoga as a lifestyle and enjoy the constant evolution of it. unleash your unlimited potential. let your yogic lifestyle be as unique as you are. embrace the teachings, hold onto what resonates with you, and continue to live your life one pose at a time. let's work together to help create a truly tranquil space.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson

carol collins
i turned 40 this may. this birthday was harder than any other i can remember. our culture seems to look at this age as a real turning point. one of the magazines i perused while standing in the grocery line listed women who dressed too young for their age. these celebrities were all in their 40s. do i need to buy a different wardrobe? inquiring minds like mine want to know.
do i need to change my yoga practice? after taking a rather vigorous class two days before my big day, i was sore as hell on my birthday. i came down with a bad cold and i lost my keys. i felt old. i felt sorry for myself. my father-in-law said, "tomorrow will be better". i cringed, thinking: "but then i'm not present with today, with the NOW." that day i needed to look forward to the next day. i needed to get past the buildup of the big birthday. the next day was MUCH better.
so i wanted to write a little bit about yoga and aging. if i had not been doing yoga these last eight years, i'm sure my body would not feel as healthy, strong, and open as it does today. many people tell me i don't look 40. but most importantly, do i feel 40? when i meditate, when i'm present enough to feel that state of pratyahara in my yoga practice, when i'm comfortable in my own skin, when i'm in savasana pose, age is of no concern to me really. all of who i am is all of the years i've lived and maybe even some previous lives. so the more i live, the more of me there is. so there. and if i want to wear my hair in pig tails, with a camisol top and tight exercise pants, i'll do it. not because i'm 40, but because i'm me.
namaste, carol

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

esther zaccagnini
five and a half years i have been practicing yoga at tranquil space! first at the church location, and then at dupont circle, i have witnessed the spectacular evolution of the studio at the caring hands of kimberly and the studio team.
for a long time, i secretly wished i could report the amazing changes that yoga allegedly brought to yogis, both at the studio and elsewhere. but yoga seemed only hard work for me; everything from warrior ii to chaturangas (oh! chaturangas) was a struggle. the classes mirrored the challenging times i was experiencing during the first stages of the adaptation process to living in the u.s.
at first i didn't notice anything worthwhile reporting, apart from the fact that i was feeling much fitter. one thing i knew, i was hooked and i needed my classes. but, after a while, surprise, surprise, i did notice a difference when i missed more than two classes in a row. so . . . the mat was working for me too! i couldn't put it into words as easily as others could, but it was definitively doing its job.
life became easier, my practice was still hard work, but everything seemed to make more sense. and there were the usual ups and downs, both in my inside and outside my practice. with time i have become much more skilled at perceiving the subtle changes my yoga practice has brought to my life, and i enjoy interpreting my yoga practice as a metaphor for life: the need for patience, enjoying the present moment, no attachment to results, etc.
now that i am getting ready to go back to my home country, spain, i have recently managed a chaturangas or two. although i am aware there has to be no attachment to even the smallest achievement, i can only interpret it as a sign; but then, there is crow pose awaiting me.
namaste,
esther

donna:
cranky? yes, cranky. that was me the week before i was to start the tranquil space level 1 teacher training. "why are you doing this if you are so cranky about it?" everyone kept asking me. "hmm, good point," i thought. i didn't know the answer, but i was looking to find out. why was i so cranky when i voluntarily chose to spend almost 30 hours of the coming three-day holiday weekend getting my level 1 certification? why was i even taking teacher training? did i want to teach yoga? i certainly didn't think so. i was just doing this to "deepen my practice."
turns out it was one of the greatest weekends i had experienced in a long time. i had never felt as engaged and connected as i did that weekend. from there i was hooked. once the weekend was over, i immediately went home and signed up for the level 2 teacher training. ten more weekends, 10 hours per weekend, for the next four months. was i crazy? i figured, how often in your life do you find something that you truly connect with and that fulfills you in so many ways? i am so grateful for tranquil space and all the wonderful teachers, yogis and tranquil space team members that contribute to creating such a warm, open, and inviting space that enabled me not only to experience a deeper joy from my own yoga practice, but to discover a new passion in teaching yoga, as well.
rebecca:
yoga was dripping out of my ears. it was everywhere, all the time. you know you are really in it when all you dream about are standing pose sequences. teacher training was way more than i had bargained for, and now that i'm on the other side of it, i can't ever go back, nor would i ever want to.
so why do i keep returning every week? training made me realize that i've only just begun my study of yoga. and what gives me the strength to return to my mat is the unparalleled community at tranquil space. knowledgable teachers, warm faces, new students, old students, my regular monday night crew, my teacher training class . . . the common thread is yoga, but what makes it great, and what keeps me coming back, are the people. as i take the next steps toward becoming a teacher, i feel reassured that i have such a supportive team behind me.
