“what lies before us and what lies behind us is nothing compared to what lies within us.”
~ emerson

tranquil space is a lifestyle-focused yoga studio that serves to enhance lives on and off the yoga mat. but what does this really mean? having reflected on this a lot recently, i wanted to share the evolutionary process. six years ago when i went through my first teacher training, i consciously decided that i didn't want to become a yoga teacher who leads students through a series of poses and then simply sends them on their way. so when i began inviting strangers into my living room to practice, i knew i wanted to offer them more — ways to live life more fully, ways to explore their creative side, ways to connect with other like-minded washingtonians, and ways to find their edge.

my knees and hips ached from pounding pavement. i knew when it was going to rain, by the pain in my hips. my back would seize up after many hours of working. i couldn't stand up straight, nor touch my toes, for that matter. my stomach churned from precarious eating habits.

my doctor offered pills, which made me numb. my friends offered me sound advice, which i could not hear. my bosses offered me pay increases, to stave off my dissatisfaction. i would offer myself goals, which i could never achieve, and thus led myself to greater sadness.

i was just miserable. i wasn't sure of where i wanted to be, but i knew i ached everywhere. i was a bit of a wreck physically, mentally, and spiritually. nothing seemed to fit; everything was misaligned. what i thought i wanted was not what i wanted.

i started taking yoga because i needed mental as well as physical exercise. it is hard to learn to slow down in dc, and stress from work seems to follow me around like an unhealthy companion. yoga has taught me much over the last four years. i have learned to live in the moment, understand and challenge my body, and become a less cynical and more compassionate person.

virgo. ain't no cusp about it. former congressional staffer, lawyer, daughter, sister, wife, and hopefully future mother. always pushing forward to the next thing.

i first started yoga via video. thanks, rodney. my first in-person class was on my honeymoon. i started my yoga practice at the dupont studio and then moved to chevy chase and away from my tranquil space. back to rodney. during some travels i injured my neck and was in extreme pain. when provided options, i knew i couldn't have an operation on my neck. i just couldn't. physical therapy wasn't working and the meds were working too well. after a successful and continuing experience with massage therapy i received an email about tranquil space opening a bethesda studio. it was a sign.

i found yoga and tranquil space through a colleague at work at an international environmental organization. since then i have always associated my practice as something that complements the values of my career. as yogis, we must be attentive to the world around us and live in harmony with it. of course, sometimes work can be stressful and demanding. for me yoga keeps me in balance (and breathing), challenging me to seek out time for myself while meeting the demands of my career. on the road, the tranquil space cd keeps me connected to a universal space i can call my own. no matter which language i am practicing or currency i am trading, "namaste" remains the same.
