yogi night in
An evening devoted to nourishing your inner self through a yoga practice led by Kimberly Wilson, journal writing, clothing and book swapping, tea and treat savoring. We will also have a demonstration of products by The Body Shop that assist yogis' special needs. This will be the first of many "yogi nights in" and we are excited about offering a way to share community, donate items left over from the swap to a local shelter, and play with other yogis in a light setting while coming together to enjoy our practice. A fun, creative way to spend your Saturday night! For those energized by the evening, there's always time for dancing and sushi nearby afterwards.
a hip opening journey
It has been said that the more open the hips, the more open the heart! Join Pary Williamson for an afternoon of hip focusing fun. This workshop will begin with meditation and a flow of various standing asanas to warm the body and gradually open the hips. The breath will be used to assist the opening while allowing the body to go deeper into each pose. The afternoon will end with floor work, using seated and supine poses to relieve tightness and unwanted stored emotions from the hips. You will leave the workshop feeling relaxed and restored throughout while gaining a better understanding of working with your hips!

full moon yoga
The luminous fullness of the moon represents plenitude, abundance, and generous blessings. Join Danielle Polen for a beautiful evening of flowing, meditative movement, featuring guided Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) by candlelight, lunar mantras, and poetic offerings. In contrast to the energetic, heating quality of sun salutations, moon salutations cultivate a sense of calm and rejuvenation, providing an opportunity to shed old layers and reaffirm our highest intentions. Come and celebrate the feeling of being fully alive, as you absorb and integrate the powerful energy and quiet beauty of the full moon.
And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet always in her proper sphere
She's Mistress of the Night.
--Henry David Thoreau
post-natal and mommy and me yoga
This post-natal workshop with Carol Collins will provide moms with the basics of strengthening and de-stressing muscles and emotions overworked by the demands of being a new mother. Use this time to connect again with your bodies by learning how to center your awareness, rebuild your pelvic floor muscles and abdominals. Explore yoga postures that relieve neck and back discomfort, and discover ways to flow through a vinyasa yoga class to maintain balance while strenghtening your legs and lower body. This is also a great way to connect with your new baby and other moms! Bring your baby or come alone. Babies not yet crawling are welcome. Doctor approval is recommended.

asana of the month
headstand
Rests the head, strengthens the respiratory system and circulation, refreshes the entire body, brings a rich supply of nutrients to the brain, spine and nervous system, is said to increase memory, concentration and intellectual capacity. This pose is considered the king of all asanas!
yogi of the month
todd dubenezic

In my 6 years of living in Washington D.C. I found some Tranquil Space a year ago when I took my Newbie Yoga class. Initially a sore knee and poor posture lead me to Yoga. Little did I know I would find so much more.
As a child and as an adult I have been living with a closed posture and shy personality. My body has experienced the trauma of chest surgery and depression. This past year for me has been about opening up my heart and body. Much of this has happened at Tranquil Space.
My experience at Tranquil Space has been a positive one from the start. I took the Newbie Yoga class and I realized that Yoga and I were meant for each other. My teachers that day, Siobhan and Anne, helped give me the fundamentals that I still use to this day. Since then I have moved through Yoga 1 classes and into Yoga 2. Each step of the way I have been nurtured by wonderful teachers who guide me into the right poses and keep me focused in the moment.
To me, Yoga is about finding the peace in every moment, which translates into finding the peace in every moment of life. Sometimes I find there are poses I can't do, so I focus on what I can do. I know Kimberly and Lisa are making sure I honor the poses to the best of my ability.
I feel like a rose that is starting to blossom. I am finally in touch with my body and I love the feeling. I find joy in my practice and in the experience of moving my body. The other day I couldn't help but smile when Kimberly mentioned that Namaskar A was up next. Each pose for me is an expression. I feel like an artist painting on a canvas.
Tranquil Space was the perfect environment for me to open up to Yoga. I needed a nurturing environment with teachers and students who care. My teachers have taught me to honor my body and I am doing that now. Thank you Kimberly for providing so many wonderful classes and workshops and for creating an environment where the process of learning is just as important as the final poses.
Namaste,
Todd

reflective closing thoughts

|
""It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end."
~ Ursula K. LeGuin
|
|
This June marks the end of one long journey for Tranquil Space and the beginning of another. After a year of searching for the perfect place and five months of anxious waiting and hard work, we've finally passed all our government inspections and are cleared to move into our new studio on P Street. In a way, it's like the end of an era. Over the next few weeks, we'll finally get to see the results of all our recent struggles. We'll be leaving the church behind for good, and venturing into brand new territory, opening a whole new stage in our development.
These last few months have been a time of much transition in many lives. In times like these, it is important to honor ourselves, both where we are and where we are headed. Change can be scary, but without it, there can be no growth. Life is all about change learning today's lesson and moving forward to the next. Each new day is a new beginning, a chance to live life more fully, do more good, and accomplish more. If we embrace each day as a fresh start, an important step in life's journey, we will never be stagnant and we will never be bored. Don't be afraid to take your steps boldly and without hesitation.
Many have written on the importance of the journey. It is not the goal that is most important, but the manner in which we accomplish it. In this month of June, let us all set aside some time to contemplate where we are on our own journeys, both inner and outer, and how we can best proceed while nurturing ourselves and those around us.
 | Much love and gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
