asana of the month
lotus/padmasana

The benefits of this pose: Awakens the hips, the blood supply to the legs is decreased and redirected to the abdominal region. This increased flow of blood in the abdominal region is beneficial for the inner organs and improves the digestion. Often recommended to people with nervous disorders. When the body is held motionless and stable, it becomes relaxed and the mind begins to calm down which is a precondition for going deeper.

yogi(s) of the month

Adam & Alex

We began consistently practicing yoga in June of 2001. Yoga was one of the first experiences we consciously decided to share together. At the time, we had just entered into a serious relationship with each other and were experiencing all the newness and excitement of being together.

Yoga has brought to our awareness the importance of mindfulness and compassion, of really listening and understanding "the small stuff" in life. Kimberly's personal approach to yoga is so invigorating and calming at the same time. She reinforces the idea that once you cease judgment of yourself, you come to appreciate the process tremendously and realize that there is no final destination of which to arrive. This kind of self-compassion has become a metaphor for both of us in our daily lives. It enhances how we treat ourselves, each other, and others in the world around us.

Yoga really is our spiritual time that we share together. It's a tremendous workout for the mind, body, and spirit. The more we practice, the more other parts of our lives are becoming integrated with a yogic state of consciousness.

I began practicing Yoga about 2 years ago at Tranquil Space (in Kimberly's living room - you had to sign up 2 weeks in advance to get a spot!). About a year or so ago, I intensified my practice and began to enjoy more of the numerous benefits yoga has to offer: a physical strength that also translates into mental strength (still ways to go there …), an increased presence of mind, a sense of centeredness, relaxation and restoration, as well as the ability to grow and go beyond my limitations.

Tranquil Space has played a crucial role in this journey. The vinyasa yoga taught at the studio is full of grace and harmony and yet at the same time challenging. It offers a wonderful balance of a basic pattern with variations and new elements that enables you to grow, go deeper into your practice and learn new things every time you attend a class. In addition, the welcoming and accepting atmosphere at the studio has a restoring and refreshing effect in itself.

It has been an honor and an enriching experience to be able to support the studio in additional ways: as studio assistant, substitute teacher, and volunteer at the Spring Showcase. It has allowed me to connect to a bigger part of the Tranquil Space community, beyond the person right next to you on the mat and during tea time. It has also allowed me to extend my practice, to make it a bigger part of my life, by taking more classes (a benefit of the free class-"compensation" for studio assistants), by passing on what I have learned and by taking my yoga practice off the mat and including part the bigger urban community in it.

kimberly's closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"Creativity can be described as letting go of certainties."
~ Gail Sheehy

My memorial day weekend was spent chanting with Krishna Das. I thought this month's closing would be a perfect venue to share the revelations that the weekend provoked. I had planned this escape months in advance as a gift to myself for the completion of my first year of graduate school, the end of Spring Showcase preparations, and a time to reflect on visions for the summer. Little did I know the lessons that this experience would provide.

I was accompanied by an Artist's Way Circle graduate, Kelly Koh. The feeling of getting away from everything, even for only a couple of days kept us giddy the entire trip down to Yogiville. The last stretch of the drive was incredibly windy and I was happy to be at the wheel during what felt like a roller coaster ride as we continually discussed how we hoped Krishna Das would wait for us to begin chanting. When we finally arrived, we heard him from outside and raced to the building only to realize if we entered from that door, we would end up on stage with him - probably not what the other yogis were anticipating. The first kirtan with him was amazing, his voice is hypnotic and able to take people to another place.

Saturday morning began at 5:50 a.m. with violin playing to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to awaken our sleeping spirits. I made it through meditation and yoga (feel asleep for the first time in shavasana!) and then to breakfast. This was yet another adventure - I couldn't find sugar for my oatmeal and was informed that they probably don't have sugar for us. I was mortified and added honey to all my meal products for the rest of the weekend. No sugar??? Defeated, I set off to do some journal writing and reflection before the morning kirtan. I soon realized that I was desperately in need of a nap at 10 a.m. Yogaville was exhausting me already! Mid-afternoon I was having sugar cravings and needed to get away from the restrictions so we headed to the nearest town 40 minutes away through the curvaceous road while we sung along to Alanis and Sarah MacLaughlin at the top of our lungs. Then I saw the Dollar Store - a shopping spree in addition to sugar, life was good! The next 24 hours continued with more kirtan, a visit to the famous Lotus shrine, the observation of Sri GuruDev and his "disciples" who wore watches with his face on them, and more pouring of honey on every ounce of food.

The weekend turned out to offer me something more than I had expected. I initially had set the intention of reflection, visionary work for the summer months, had brought lots of books, magazines and ideas to work on. However, I took away much more than my initial intention, which was only touched on during the one journal writing session that produced strong desires for a mid-morning nap. I was reminded of the importance of letting go, freeing oneself from preconceived expectations of constantly being productive and simply enjoying the moment - a notion that I love but seldom allow myself to experience.

Thus, the moral of my Yogaville adventures are to remind all of us to be open to what certain experiences allow. It is so important to set an intention for our actions but it is equally important to be open to what unfolds which may be completely different than the intention set or expectation imagined. A road trip can do more for the soul than a block of time focusing on goals. We must feed the spirit in order to continue giving fully of ourself and achieving our limitless possibility. What better way than through a drive down a windy country road singing along to Krishna Das or finding hidden treasures at the local dollar store or releasing expectations and being open to the full experience of what the present moment allows.

Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
