during a recent mentoring session
and after leading the hip tranquil chick retreat, i realized that we are all
searching for basic everyday tools to bring us tranquility in some form. from
our dose of caffeinated beverages in the morning to our food and exercise
choices, we crave a sense of contentment and comfort. when deciding what to
write for this month’s musing, i wanted to share my favorite tranquility
tools, along with some from our fabulous tranquiliTeam.
tranquility is defined as: 1. a disposition free from stress or emotion; 2. an
untroubled state; free from disturbances; 3. a state of peace and quiet. these
all sound pretty good to me! considering the stress that life can bring on a
daily basis (urgent deadlines, metro delays, uninspiring e-mails), if we don’t
have our tranquility tools nearby, within us, or to look forward to, we can
easily get thrown off course.
here are a few of my faves that are sure to elicit a return to a more tranquil
state:
-
the 3-part yogic breath – we all
know this one well. play with it while waiting in long lines or on during
that challenging conference call.
-
meditation – sit still and practice
“being.”
-
aromatherapy – add a dash of
lavender to a pulse point to relax or peppermint to energize.
-
affirmations – observe your
self-talk. replace the negatives with positive statements.
-
massage – a must-have to keep the
body and soul supple.
-
journaling – a great way to
self-reflect and turn inward.
-
6 movements of the spine –
throughout the day, spend a few moments working the spine into a forward
bend, back bend, side bends and twists on each side.
-
healthy snacks – having healthy
natural, organic options nearby (nuts, fruit bars, whole fruits, baby
carrots) saves a guilty trip to the vending machine.
-
get moving – dancing, yoga, biking,
and running do wonders to increase endorphins. carve out time in your
schedule to play.
-
bead, knit, paint – let your
creative juices flow and watch the stress subside.
here are some additional suggestions from some
of our tranquiliTeam:
“i come home from a super-long day at the office and slip into something more
comfortable. i pour myself a nice glass of pinot noir and pop my favorite rodney
yee dvd into the machine. the naked dogs and i curl up on the couch for some
tool-time, as we watch rod's little black microshorts move through the asanas.
if this isn't tranquility, i don't know what is...” – danielle, teacher
“my favorite things to do in the midst of studying are to light candles and
incense while i'm reading, have some lavender oil on hand for sore shoulders,
make a pot of jasmine green tea, and i always look forward to yoga and a bike
ride!” – mary ashby, teacher assistant
“tune in to who you are, where you are, right now. be present and enjoy what's
on the plate right in front of you at this moment.” – john, teacher assistant
“for some tranquility and indulgence in me-time, nothing beats a bath with some
of my favorite salts, essential oils, candles, jazz music, a fav book, and a
glass of something fizzy!” – christy, executive assistant to kimberly
“taking the time to cook dinner from scratch-- chopping veggies and fresh herbs
can be very meditative, and sitting for an unrushed meal feels like a divine
indulgence. long dinners are nourishment on many levels.” – melissa, teacher sub
“i light candles, sip wine, do headstand, and listen to la llorhona by lhasa.” –
norissa, tranquiliT chief operating partner
“my favorite tranquility tool is a long warm/hot bath, with a candle and maybe a
good book in which you get list ... and then falling asleep. or a long slow flow
yoga practice with long holding of hip openers and backbends and a long
supported savasane (with a blanket under the bottom edge of the shoulder
blades).” – anne, teacher
"in recently immersing myself in 'small town
living,' i got reacquainted with gardening, something my parents had done a lot
of when i was a child. planting my own herb, vegetable and flower gardens has
provided me with a soothing connection to nature, and a sense
of solitude and respite from any daily worries. caring for the plants routinely
has added a healthy part to my own daily routine." - gina, programming & finance
director
thank you for joining us on this tranquil journey. i hope this muse helps bring
a dose of tranquility into your day. start now by creating a comfort drawer at
work (see page 146 of hip tranquil chick) and taking 5 deep, full breaths.
remember, yoga is settling thoughts of the mind into tranquility. practice your
yoga off the mat at this moment.
tranquilly
yours,
kimberly wilson

summer is always a special time in my
practice, and next month will mark the sixth anniversary of my first yoga class
and the beginning of an almost-daily practice.
i confess that when i first started teaching, i was very nervous about teaching
beginners. as a new student, there is so much for you to learn. i knew from
experience that those early classes can set off a life long practice or make you
turn away from the mat altogether. however, in time, i began to really enjoy
working with new students. i see it as a privilege to take something that has
had such a profound influence on my life and share it with others.
a few weeks ago, it was one of those typical dc summer days: hot, humid, and
over 90 degrees. i predicted my class would be a bit smaller than usual, and it
was. however, i had three students who were coming to tranquil space for the
first time. i knew what it big step it can be to try yoga for the first time,
and i admired their courage for coming out on a night when it would have been
easier to enjoy air conditioning with a glass of iced tea and a good book. after
class they shared things that clicked for them, what they wanted to learn more
about, and their goals for starting a yoga practice. it was, as it is every
time, a touching and humbling experience for me.
these days, i find the only drawback of teaching beginners is that many of them
eventually move on to more advanced classes. while it can be a bit sad for me to
see them go, i’m also glad that something during our time together encouraged
them to keep going.
namaste!

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

after spending a year practicing yoga at home,
i worked up the courage to attend a yoga class in fall 2002. i sampled several
of the studios in the area and found a natural affinity for tranquil space
because i appreciated the attention toward alignment and the consistent class
structure which offers a balance in fitness and meditation. i feel extremely
grateful to tranquil space for helping me build the strength and flexibility
that is so important to prevent injuries (helping me to prolong my doomed love
affair with running!) and for providing a platform for me to address my
(previously) inadequate stress management skills. even after 5 years of
practicing the same postures again and again, i look forward to each and every
class!!! thanks tranquil space!

it was a delightful surprise to be chosen as team player of
the month! it's hard to believe that 9 years ago, i was a chubby and completely
uncoordinated high schooler with a p.e. report card that read: "arwa puts in an
effort, but achieves little." it took me a long time to convince myself that
exercise didn't have to involve a ball, or a net. as well, basic physical
activities like running seemed like they should be simple, but i realized that i
didn't know how to use my body effectively. who knew that just flailing my limbs
around until i was all sweaty was not good enough? my recent pilates practice
has taught me core control and alignment, but i felt like i still needed to
continue in my wee epic adventure and began trying
classes at yoga studios in the area. on a whim, i stumbled upon tranquil space
and it was the warmest and most welcoming place i had stepped foot in. one year
later, i'm still not the most graceful yogini, but i have enjoyed every breath i
have taken in various classes. i always leave feeling strong, limber and
refreshed. and there are no reports cards after class...just cookies; how could
it be any better?
a huge thank you and hugs to kimberly, all the lovely teachers and the entire
team for being so inspirational. a extra thank you to brooke, sarah and gina for
being lovely trainer extraordinaires! i truly appreciate being part of such a
giving community.
