“i've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget the way you made them feel.” ~ maya angelou
this quote has stuck with me since i came across it, as it offers a powerful statement into how best to live our lives. as tranquil space continues to grow and expand with offerings, i believe this quote truly captures what we strive to do at the studio. i received an email from someone yesterday who wrote, "the first time i walked into the studio, there were actually tears in my eyes because more so than any other place in the city, this felt like home. i still have that same flood of gratitude for being able to practice in such an amazing place with such inspiring teachers. not only does tranquil space provide the ability to move my body and stretch my mind, it refreshes and recharges me spiritually and allows me to give more fully in all the other aspects of my life." her email caused me to reflect on this quote and how best to ensure i make others feel special at the studio and beyond.
at tranquil space, we focus on creating an experience for our students complete with music, the smell of lavender, assists during class, soothing ambiance, and tea and cookies. we hope we succeed in truly offering you a tranquil space a sacred haven in the city. i'd like to take the reflection on senses a step further to discuss how best to use them in a hip and tranquil way during our daily life to have a lasting effect on ourselves and others:
communication: there's a saying that you attract more flies with honey than vinegar. when communicating with others, notice your delivery, and carefully choose your words. during teacher training, students are taught to teach yoga in a clear and concise manner. say exactly what you mean. this translates beautifully off the mat and helps to keep expectations clear and avoid assumption. speak from the "i" and always express gratitude. oh, and people love hearing the sound of their names; use them often.
touch: when connecting with someone, i find it powerful to shake their hand, give a hug, or touch them on their arm when communicating. we don't get enough touch in our society, and reaching out to another in this way can have a great impact. find ways to include more deep connection to others whether it is through physical touch or emotional touch (asking how someone is doing and really listening). your ability to connect with others on an emotional level can take you further than any time management skill or advanced yoga pose. ultimately we are here to connect fully with one another and to help ease each other's journey.
presentation: how we present ourselves to the world speaks volumes of how we feel internally. i remember this playing out when selling candy as a camp fire girl in grade school. the amount of candy i would sell when i approached the doors cheerfully versus filled with an obvious sense of frustration that my mom had me hitting the streets again on a saturday morning was astounding. the lesson has stayed with me. we really are as happy as we make our minds up to be. sure, selling candy when your girlfriends are home watching cartoons wasn't my first choice, but it was up to me to make the most out of it (and sell enough to win a "free" tent). by presenting your best self physically, mentally, and emotionally to the world, you may inspire others to do the same, and are sure to touch lives simply through your presense.
while i work on the mission for the tranquil space foundation (it's currently to create a tranquil space in our society but everyone says i need to narrow it down too broad, apparently!), i continue to be drawn to the notion of touching lives. how can our footprint during our time on earth leave the most profound effect? in what small way can you make a difference today? how can you make someone feel better at this moment? a quick email, phone call, e-card, compliment, expression of gratitude or touch?
thank you for constantly touching my life in such a hip and tranquil way. here's to a continuous connection to making each other feel special . . .
graciously yours,
kimberly wilson

rob hess
two years ago and new to teaching yoga, i experienced many of those things that a beginner does i put great effort and thought into each class, agonized over options and sequences. i was challenged by my teaching and had not yet found the path that flowed from within. on reflection, i view that experience as an essential part to creating the foundation that i have built.
today, i find myself in a very different place. i have expanded my network and community; i have expanded my passion, knowledge, and skills through a variety of new experiences under a variety of teachers that has allowed me to begin to see things in a new light.
my worldview about yoga and myself took a major shift last summer when i went to kripalu to study under shiva rea. this was a new experience a full seven days immersed in study and practice with one of the most influential vinyasa yoga instructors, and one who really inspires my practice. i remember returning from the training, and my partner of seven years noticed that in very subtle but real ways, i moved differently. i took from that training new ways of being and teaching, and i immediately incorporated those learnings into my teaching and my practice on and off the mat.
i followed that up with a teacher training in yoga trance dance and will soon be traveling to los angeles for another two-week yoga immersion with shiva rea. i have discovered, through mentors and teachers, that those answers we seek are already within us, and that yoga can be one of the many doorways to our true self.
today, i am constantly experimenting and challenging myself, and my students, not only under the influence of my early teachers, but also of those who have shifted my approach, my feelings, my thoughts, and my passion for yoga. today, i no longer struggle with my classes. by embracing the universal energy that is all around us, my classes and my practice naturally flow.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
side plank / vasisthasana

tim mooney:
hello, you've probably seen me at the studio . . . i'm the guy sweating in the corner. i used to be the guy sweating in the corner awkwardly falling all over himself, unable to even get into down dog without pulling a hammy. luckily, with persistence and a great group of yoga instruction from the fine ladies and gentlemen of tranquil space, i am now officially (and, perhaps, inexplicably) the co-yogi of the month. enjoy that car, co-yogi tim . . . well-deserved, sir!
it's been quite the journey. . . i was first introduced to yoga through my girlfriend, who just so happens to be the owner of tranquil space, the lovely kimberly wilson. while i was fascinated with yoga, and amazed at the people involved with the studio, i felt that it was important to maintain some level of separation in our lives to ensure our individuality.
my first yoga experience certainly didn't help. i remember it like it was yesterday . . . it was a sultry 100 degrees in talum, mexico, and i think i lost ten pounds in water weight, snapped unnecessarily at kimberly for having the temerity to be helpful, and slipped on my own sweaty mat. thankfully . . . things improved. i took another class with rob in mexico a year later (as we celebrated the nuptials of the dearly departed lisa and nick) . . . i then took the newbie series with kevin last october. since then, i've become a regular at my favorite yoga teacher's saturday class . . . kimberly, of course . . . and no, there's no bias there. i've started going to class two and even three times a week, even sampling a few yoga 2s in the process. the inside joke is that i've developed quite the cuerpo de joga, but i'm not convinced of that yet.
yoga has really been a surprisingly important addition to my life . . . it's been physically and mentally rewarding in ways i never thought possible. i'm truly lucky to have it in my life. while i'll always be the sweaty guy in the corner, i'm hopeful that my practice will steadily improve, and that the lessons i learn about myself on the mat will continue to translate off the mat.
tim kelley:
my brother michael invited me to my first yoga class several years ago. i wasn't sure what to expect, and so arrived with an open mind. i figured it would at least be a physical workout. an asana practice includes a physical workout, yet i discovered that yoga offers more dimensions, such as meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques), philosophy, and more. despite being inflexible and a bit sore after my first class, i enjoyed the class and wanted to return. i didn't feel that i had to compete with my classmates, nor did i want to. i just wanted to do the best i could and to improve over time. for whatever reason, i struggled to find that intention when playing sports or going to the gym to work out. as a result, i'm still at it. i'm reminded of the mind-body connection that is easy to forget in the information and gadget age or, if you will, in the "age of the crackberry!" yoga reminds me that "to be" is often more important than "to do."
tranquil space yoga has been an important part of my life for the past few years. its dupont circle location is convenient and its teachers foster a sense of community on and off the mat. my favorite instructor is my gorgeous wife gina! this opinion is unbiased, of course. in addition to the challenging and refreshing classes at the studio, tranquil space offers wonderful workshops and retreats. i enjoyed the recent retreat to yogaville with gina, kimberly, and tim, who is co-yogi of the month! (we were both awarded new cars for our amazing efforts!) it was refreshing to practice yoga in an incredible rural setting away from the city for a few days.
my hope is to continue going to yoga classes as long as i can, and deepening my asana practice while enjoying the benefits of strength, balance, serenity, and good health. see you at tranquil space!

about three years ago i discovered that practicing yoga at tranquil space was a wonderful experience that always put a smile on my face. so i decided to deepen my practice by enrolling in the intense, comprehensive, and outstanding yoga teacher training available and was thrilled when offered the opportunity to be a teacher's assistant for the noon monday class, for rob hess. i apply adjustments and assists that i am learning in teacher training and afterward i feel as though i have done something important and wonderful for everyone practicing yoga. being thanked and seeing people smile after class is an uplifting experience and it makes me smile not only with my face, but with my heart. thank you, rob hess and tranquil space!
