"Visioning is a process of creating the life you want. It is a method of finding the dream that lives in your heart and translatingit into the world of three dimensions. Visioning can be described as practical dreaming."

July is a fabulous mid-way point to reflect on your 2004 dreams. Have your New Year's resolutions proven successful? Are you still hoping to set the world on fire or are only faint ambers burning? What better time to contemplate and create a vision statement for your life? The days are long, the smell of fresh cut grass lingers, restoration is only a yoga pose away, and a sense of playfulness hovers over the city during summer months.
Today's yoga-lover knows the importance of seeking balance and exuding mindfulness during the practice of yoga and life. While modern life pulls in so many directions, the ability to stay grounded and connected to a larger purpose can help even the newbie yogi come back to stability.
To maintain balance, pay careful attention to nurturing yourself, your surroundings and your relationships. Develop your inner artist through constant creative endeavors. Get in touch with your strengths and weaknesses, both on and off the yoga mat. Exude confidence; and create a signature style that reflects your inner flair. Display grace in all interactions, and show compassion to those who cross your path. Begin this mindful lifestyle by creating a passion-filled vision statement.
A vision statement is a simple promise to the world that your presence on this earth is not in vain. No, actually, it is with a very clear purpose. It can be as specific as opening a much-needed shoe store in your neighborhood or as global and grandiose as changing the world through activist efforts. Begin by noticing what moves you what ignites passion, and what you admire in others. It is true that the unexamined life is not worth living, so establish a purpose. Once the vision is set, align decisions and goals in accordance with the vision. Until then, if there is not a clearly defined direction, the path towards an actualized vision will be very windy.
OMwork (not "HOME"work):
- Write 20 activities that bring you joy. Ex., running, writing, and listening to music.
- Write 10 causes that inspire you. Ex., feminism, bargain shoe-buying, and animal rights.
- Write 10 1-year and 5-year goals. Ex., Getting certified to teach yoga, completing a business plan, or writing a book proposal may be a 1-year goal. A 5-year goal may be opening a yoga studio, getting published, or becoming a well-known speaker on feminist issues.
Do you see a common theme among these three lists? How can you weave them together to create a vision statement for your life? A vision statement for these examples could be to inform others of the importance of living an empowered life through writing about yoga and feminist values. Once a clear vision statement has been set, inscribe it on colorful note cards. Position them all around you at work, in your planner, at home, in your luscious handbag so that you are constantly reminded of why you're here and where you're going!
Half of the year is gone; another fresh half awaits us like an untouched canvas. Visualize your life as a masterpiece which you create daily with every decision. This will empower you to make conscious choices. May the next half of 2004 be lived consciously with awareness of the art you create each and every day.

I have been a hip and tranquil dude since October 2003, when I found Tranquil Space after trying out a few other yoga studios. In finding a studio, I looked for a place that would closely resemble my preschool experience. In yoga, as in preschool, the most important task is finding the right mat. I found a soft one that is blue (my favorite color) and invokes the joyous sensation of finger painting. The similarities don't end there. Both preschool and yoga provide a nap time (savasana). Tea and cookies are snack time, and the yoga gem reading at the end of class reminds me of my pre-school teacher reading me the Berenstain Bears books. One finds strength and stability through downward facing dog, the foundation of vinyasa yoga, and it is also the name of my favorite reading corner book. And though preschool was over twenty years ago, the girls still don't talk to the boys. Tranquil Space has become a major part of my life, and I don't see myself changing preschools while I'm living in this school district. |

All I ever really needed to know about my yoga practice, I learned from being the Tranquil Space towel woman:
There will always be more dirty towels, just as there will always be more for me to learn in my yoga practice.
In a recent Yoga Journal, Judith Lasater wrote an essay entitled, "After the Laundry, the Laundry," where she advised readers to accept that nothing ever really gets "done." Getting into the routine of dropping off clean towels and picking up the dirty ones has helped me to see the joy in the "doing," not the getting it done.
The key is consistency.
My own laundry used to pile up, and I didn't practice yoga with any regularity because it is so easy to find other things to do that sap my time. Making myself responsible for the studio's towels has given me the ability and the reason to practice consistently, which is where I can start to see change happen.
There is joy in service.
Just as I have enjoyed playing my small role in making the studio a comfortable place, I recently took the level 1 teacher training class and found how much I enjoyed helping others create a yoga practice.
The most important thing I have received from being the TranquilSpace towel woman is the chance to come regularly to this comfortable studio and learn from such gifted, generous instructors. In addition to the changes I have seen in my body from regular practice, I believe I have gained confidence seeing that I can bring about changes with steady application. TranquilSpace has given me a place to practice being more accepting with myself, for which I am very grateful.
