dynamic vinyasa flow workshop
inversions, arm balances, and backbends
simon park with thomas flanagan
This workshop will explore unique and challenging inversions, arm balances, and backbends. "Peak" poses such as tri-pod headstand to sidecrow, compass pose to flying scissors, and handstand to scorpion will be linked together in dynamic and creative vinyasas. The workshop will be taught in a gradual progression so that students of all levels can experience the journey. As this flow unfolds, practitioners gain an internal and external understanding of balance, grace, and progression.
Our yoga practice will be accompanied by the sitar and guitar played by Thomas Flanagan. He will also lead a short discussion on how instruments such as the sitar and didgeridoo are played, and their unique qualities.

full moon yoga
The luminous fullness of the moon represents plenitude, abundance, and generous blessings. Join Danielle Polen for a beautiful evening of flowing, meditative movement, featuring guided Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) by candlelight, lunar mantras, and poetic offerings. In contrast to the energetic, heating quality of sun salutations, moon salutations cultivate a sense of calm and rejuvenation, providing an opportunity to shed old layers and reaffirm our highest intentions. Come and celebrate the feeling of being fully alive, as you absorb and integrate the powerful energy and quiet beauty of the full moon.
And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet always in her proper sphere
She's Mistress of the Night.

asana of the month
revolved half moon
This pose is a deep twisting pose that squeezes and rinses all the organs and tissues of your mid-body, including your digestive system. It wrings out toxins from the liver, spleen, colon, gallbladder, and kidneys and releases the lumbar spine and helps relieve lower back pain while assisting with balance.
yogi of the month
abaseh mirvali

After a 5-year posting in Turkey with my husband, I returned to Washington early this year and discovered that "my little city" had changed quite a bit. Although, I had visited from time to time, I found that people and their attitudes had somehow become less welcoming, stressed-out and cold. The move back home and an overall hectic existence led to a series of migraine headaches and a frenzied feeling.
During my first week back in Washington, I made a new friend who was going through a career change and transition in her life. To give ourselves a bit of structure, we created a list of six-month goals for ourselves to track our progress on a weekly and monthly basis. In order to attain my goal of greater strength and flexibility I decided to enroll in regular yoga classes (twice each week) at Tranquil Space.
I attended my first class with Andrea and remember my nervous laughter, as I made my way so clumsily through class. When I even had trouble distinguishing my left from my right, Andrea would just smile, come over and occasionally gently adjust me. As I remained lying there in savasana at the end of class, Andrea brought me an eye pillow (what a fabulous invention!), and I found myself truly at peace for the first time in ages.
As I attended more classes, I discovered Gina, Jessie, Lisa, Pary, Carol, Siobhan and Peg and found that even though each teacher had her own style and special touch, all of them created the same loving, respectful and nurturing environment. This was clearly the "Tranquil Space" that Kimberly must have envisioned and certainly the one that I had longed for. I was now attending classes three times each week and often stayed after class to enjoy cookies, tea and chatting with my classmates. I had made new friends and felt like part of a new family.
I also remember hanging around to watch the Yoga II students in action, admiring them and hoping that their strength might somehow rub off on me. I watched in awe the beautiful poses of Kate and Carol, two expectant mothers, and continued to work on my own skills to try and grow as strong and poised as they were. Kimberly had encouraged me on several occasions to try a Yoga II, but I was still a bit apprehensive.
I then learned that I had to travel overseas and would be away from Washington for a month, or so. I was quite distressed, as I had just settled into my schedule. Despite the gloomy weather of the winter and spring, I had remained true to both my professional and personal goals. You might say I panicked at what would happen to the "teeny weeny" bit of flexibility and strength that I had achieved up until that point. Someone had recommended Kimberly's CD and while I bought it, Kimberly recommended that I try a few Yoga II classes before trying it out.
Luckily, there was a "Jumping into a Yoga II" class with Lisa and Anne. All I have to say is "thank goodness for positive reinforcement!" And a few days later, there I was, in the last row, flanked on each side with support from Leigh Ann and Maura in my first Yoga II class with Kimberly. The class was so hard and so wonderful at the same time. Kimberly's adjustments came at the most perfect intervals, just when I thought I could not hang on any longer, but I did. As I opened my eyes and gave thanks, I felt a real sense of pride and joy. My classmates gave me hugs, winks, and smiles to congratulate me on completing my first Yoga II class. I thought that it could not get any better than that. Well, it has.
For the first time in my life, I have found true pleasure in exercising and have shown a real commitment, recognizing the progress that I have already seen. I must admit that I love those adjustments, as they push me a little further every time. (We can all use a little pushing in life, can't we?) Not only did I find my tranquil, nurturing place in D.C., but so much more. I have discovered to respect my body, be at peace (oh...and no fidgeting) for an hour and 15 minutes and think about what my practice means to me. Along the way I have also made wonderful friends that I cherish.
I thank all of you beautiful ladies who smile when I arrive at sign-in and all my teachers for their dedication and beautiful spirit. It is a privilege and a joy to be part of Tranquil Space.

siobhan troy

Yoga has been such a blessing to me and finding Tranquil Space was the beginning of a whole new life. Being a competitive person from years of playing soccer and swimming really put my mindset to winning. Yoga has challenged that thought process and makes me ask myself "Why do I have to be better than anyone?" Yoga does not want us to prove anything it just asks that you look within and love what you see. That is why I have been drawn to yoga and Kimberly's openness and encouragement sure helped along the way. It has been and continues to be a way for me to get to know my authentic self.
I have been very blessed in 2003 with many life changes including changing my career from fundraising to teaching. It has been scary but so liberating at the same time. Yoga helped to keep me grounded and helped me find my inner voice that kept saying "the universe will guide me." I love helping to guide others along their path and I am so thankful that I have been able to be a part of Tranquil Space. My fellow teachers are an incredible bunch of wonderful, loving people and all the students, studio assistants & managers are such a joy to be around. Each time I teach I hope I can bring a sense of peace and joy to my students, that same feeling I find when I am on the mat and focus within.

reflective closing thoughts

|
"Aligning ourselves with what life bestows upon us, accepting the inevitability of endings and emptiness, and envisioning new heights of growth and achievement honors the cycles of death and rebirth. We all need time between cycles to rest and fill ourselves up again with fresh dreams and energy."
~ Gail McMeekin

|
I just celebrated another year passing in my life and the transition into a whole new decade. These are often times of varied emotions contemplating where I am, where I want to be and how I'm going to get there. When deciding what to write about this month, I thought about the time of year, how I was feeling and have come to realize that I'm usually not the only one with particular feelings of reflection mid-year. Summer is often a time where we hope for a sense of freedom from the mundane, trips to the beach, reading books we haven't gotten to yet this year, starting that self-care or yoga practice we were saving until we had more time. How are your summer intentions unfolding?
I love the notion of cycles, that life is profoundly cyclical and no matter how dark the night, morning always comes. How easy it is to reflect instead on the bad, the darkness, when a light morning is right around the corner. How to put this energy into creating more of what we want mid-year? 2003 is half way over. Have those new year's resolutions been successful, have new, healthy habits been created, or have we coasted half-way through this year without stopping to reflect? This is a perfect time of the year to take stock. According to Gail McKeenin, "Transformation cannot begin without a willingness to liberate ourselves from what's impeding our growth and happiness."
Growth is scary but it is necessary. This past month has been filled with delight and anxiety as we're settling into our new home and dealing with the move out of what Tranquil Space has known for almost 3 years. How best to experience your yoga off the mat than through taking risks (remember your first handstand?) and moving outside of one's comfort zone. Stagnation is one of the worst feelings I have ever known, yet there is always that balance of knowing when to slow down and let go.
The idea that when one door closes, another one opens has always provided me with a sense of comfort. Half of the year is gone, another fresh half awaits us like an untouched canvas. Visualizing our lives as a masterpiece which we create helps to empower how we wish to utilize our time while also reminding ourselves that the down time of inactivity can have dramatic effects on future growth. Sometimes simply being is much more productive than doing. May the next half of 2003 be lived consciously with intention of the work of art you hope to create.
 | Much love and gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director |

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
