Yoga and Tranquil Space, in particular, have been very important to me for the past year and a half. I started going to Tranquil Space in the dark of winter. A friend told me about Tranquil Space and I tried it. Through the classes, I was able to ease into getting to know my body again and building its strength. The spiritual atmosphere of the beautiful church, the flowers, light, and Kimberly's kind voice put me at ease. I also loved the aromatherapy and tea and cookies after class. I felt like all of my senses had been nurtured. Most especially of all, I did not feel pressure. This was not exercise in some fluorescent gym with the pounding of bad house music pushing everyone to accomplish. (I have nothing against pushing hard - and in fact have started jogging a lot). But yoga is a time to experience. It is an antidote to the stiff strength you get running or lifting weights.

I'm a type A, code red kind of person. Everything has to be done well, you have to push yourself hard to succeed. This attitude has served me very well in my career. It is completely useless, however, in ensuring my appreciation of life and my ultimate happiness. In fact, one of the things that has depressed me in my adult life is how little I feel I am living. Yoga helps me practice living -just being. This is the hardest thing of all to do. Harder than crow pose. Re-teaching my body to trust that the ground will hold me, that I am safe in the world. Learning how to expand this from class to daily living.

My practice has truly evolved over the year. There is so far I still have to go. I still get mad at myself sometimes if I can't get in a pose, or I am distracted by thoughts of what happened before class. Yoga, I'm sure, will be a perpetual thing to practice. Sometimes I think I have to be a stronger person to be happy. In fact, that's not true. I am a very strong person. What I need to do is realize my strength. Slowly I am doing that - realizing it organically as I practice yoga. Thanks Kimberly!

I "fell into" the practice of yoga two years ago. When I signed up for my first class, I was actually trying to get into a Pilates class, but all the classes were full. The woman suggested I try yoga. From my first hour on the mat, I have never looked back. I found Kimberly and was introduced to Tranquil Space.

For me, yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual journey. The strengths and challenges I face in my practice often reflect those in my life off the mat. Working through the asanas helps me to develop the inner strength, courage, and serenity to simultaneously accept myself as I am and grow as a person. What I appreciate most about Tranquil Space is the environment is supportive of this process. The classes are challenging without being intimidating. They move beyond the physical realm to include the spiritual and emotional realms as well. There is also a strong sense of community, a community that is open and inviting to all who come to the mat.

My most recent experiences with Tranquil Space as a summer studio assistant have furthered the positive influence Kimberly and the studio have had on my practice. In addition to being able to attend classes more often, I have been able to give something back to the studio and participate in the Tranquil Space community on another level. I have appreciated the opportunity to expand my practice in this way and to live its lessons both on an off the mat.

kimberly's closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"Aligning ourselves with what life bestows upon us, accepting the inevitability of endings and emptiness, and envisioning new heights of growth and achievement honors the cycles of death and rebirth. We all need time between cycles to rest and fill ourselves up again with fresh dreams and energy."
~ Gail McMeekin

I just celebrated another year passing in my life. These are often times of varied emotions contemplating where I am, where I want to be and how I'm going to get there. When deciding what to write about this month, I thought about the time of year, how I was feeling and have come to realize that I'm usually not the only one with particular feelings of reflection mid-year. Summer is often a time where we hope for a sense of freedom from the mundane, trips to the beach, reading books we haven't gotten to yet this year, starting that self-care or yoga practice we were saving until we had more time. How are your summer intentions unfolding?

I love the notion of cycles, that life is profoundly cyclical and no matter how dark the night, morning always comes. How easy it is to reflect instead on the bad, the darkness, when a light morning is right around the corner. How to put this energy into creating more of what we want mid-year? 2002 is half way over. Have those new year's resolutions been successful, have new, healthy habits been created or have we coasted half way through this year without stopping to reflect? This is a perfect time of the year to take stock. According to Gail McKeenin, "Transformation cannot begin without a willingness to liberate ourselves from what's impeding our growth and happiness."

The idea that when one door closes, another one opens has always provided me with a sense of comfort. Half of the year is gone, another fresh half awaits us like an untouched canvas. Visualizing our lives as a masterpiece which we create helps to empower how we wish to utilize our time while also reminding ourselves that the down time of inactivity can have dramatic effects on future growth. Sometimes simply being is much more productive than doing. May the next half of 2002 be lived consciously with intention of the work of art you hope to create.

Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
