"cheers to a new year and another chance for us to
get it right." - oprah winfrey |
|
bonjour and welcome to 2009! this is our
chance to get it right, start anew, and make some
changes. the possibilities are endless. a new beginning
is offered every day, not just january 1. each morning
you are given a fresh canvas on which to paint. you
choose the paint colors, the strokes, the pace, and the
other players. your life is a constantly evolving work
of art. create your new year consciously through
reflection, intention, and action.
reflection: reflect on lessons learned in 2008.
write out a year in review. note highlights, lessons
learned, and what you have to be grateful for from these
key experiences. |
intention: set your intentions by getting them
down on paper and staying mindful of them throughout
your day. collage or write out on paper what you want
2009 to look like. become mindful of qualities you hope
to cultivate.
action: create action steps on how you plan to
get there. post these action steps where you see them
every day.
sample reflection: feeling stagnant and in need
of more doing things differently.
sample intention: i want to live more creatively.
sample action: sign up for a watercolor class,
wear red, learn the tango, browse the creativity section
of amazon.com, read the artist’s way, try your hand at
DIY projects (see our sustainable crafting classes at
TranquiliT’s showroom), sign up for french
lessons, start that novel, get a sewing machine)
as my favorite marianne williamson poem states, "we are
all meant to shine and as we let our own light shine, we
unconsciously give others permission to do the same."
let your inner light sparkle in 2009 through ongoing
reflection, intention, and action. watch amazing things
unfold. the potential that lies within you is infinite.
take some sacred time to mold it and then live out loud!
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson, creative director + founder

what is your favorite yoga pose and why?
my favorite pose is supta baddha konasana. i love to open my front body, feel
the slight compression in my lower back and stretch my shoulders over my head.
then breate in the powerful vulnerability:)
what is your least favorite yoga pose and why?
my least fav pose is warrior 3. my low back is slightly misaligned. so warrior 3
on one side is extremely challenging. i feel a strong burn deep in my hip and i
need to be careful i'm not straining my low back. i love doing the pose with the
help of a wall!!
what yoga teacher inspires you? why?
jenny otto from golden heart yoga in annapolis. she knows so much about body
mechanics and the mind-body connection. she teaches way beyond the scope of any
teacher i've met so far.
give one example of how you struggle to bring yoga into your daily life. use one
or two of the yamas, niyamas or limbs of yoga to explain.
i consistently struggle to be truthful in my life. satya. truthful with myself,
those closest to me and of course others i meet. the more i learn about myself,
the more layers of pretense i see.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
according to bks iyengar,
“regular practice of sirsasana makes healthy blood flow through the brain cells.
this rejuvenates them so that thinking power increases and thoughts become
clearer. the asana is thus a tonic for people whose brains tire quickly. it
ensures a proper blood supply to the pituitary and pineal glands in the brain….
people suffering from loss of sleep, memory, and vitality have recovered by the
regular and correct practice of this asana and have become fountains of energy.
the lungs gain the power to resist any climate and stand up to any work, which
relieves one from colds, coughs, tonsillitis, halitosis, and palpitations. it
keeps the body warm…. regular practice of sirsasana will show marked improvement
in the hemoglobin content of the blood…. [it] develops the body, disciplines the
mind, and widens the horizons of the spirit. one becomes balanced and
self-reliant in pain and pleasure, loss and gain, shame and fame, and defeat and
victory.” [light on yoga, at p. 190]
salamba
sirsasana (basic headstand pose):
salamba = with support
sirsa = head
benefits: - calms the brain and helps relieve stress and
mild depression
- stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands
- strengthens the arms, legs, and spine
- strengthens the lungs
- tones the abdominal organs
- improves digestion
- helps relieve the symptoms of menopause
- therapeutic for asthma, infertility, insomnia, and sinusitis

i started in the tranquil space community 4
years ago just after working on a the last presidential election and my
involvement has evolved over the years into my full time job. i was eager to
renew and restore myself in jan 05, having a long lapsed yoga practice, but was
also eager to be a part of a team that gives such a nourishing and authentic
experience. i started as a pr assistant and sa in the bethesda location and took
the level 1 teacher training there. the following year i took tranquil space's
level 2 teacher training and started the practice and art of teaching yoga. i
started working the next year as a manager for tranquil space. similar to some
of the grassroots work i have done in the past, working for tranquil spaces is
more than just a job, but is satisfying to the soul as well. as i go into the
the
new year full of many hopes and anxieties, i am glad to be working in a place
with such a sense of community. i am grateful to kimberly, tim, marq, brooke,
and all the other staff and teachers who greet each day with a smile, and work
to make tranquil space a great place for our yogis, but also a great place to
work. who knows what the next four years will bring, but i know that tranquil
space will continue to be a place of laughter, friendship, yoga, and i hope i
can be a part of making it an oasis for all you as well.
