“cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”
~ oprah winfrey

bonjour and welcome to 2007! this is our chance to get it right, start anew, and make some changes. the possibilities are endless. a new beginning is offered every day, not just january 1. each morning you are given a fresh canvas on which to paint. you choose the paint colors, the strokes, the pace, and the other players. your life is a constantly evolving work of art. create your new year consiously through reflection, intention, and action.

reflection: reflect on lessons learned in 2006. write out a year in review. note what lessons came up for you, how you will handle things differently, and what you have to be grateful for from these key experiences.

intention: set your intentions by getting them down on paper and staying mindful of them throughout your day. collage or write out on paper what you want 2007 to look like.

action: create action steps on how you plan to get there. post these action steps where you see them every day. (example intention: i want my yoga practice to grow. commit to a daily home practice starting at just 10 minutes, practice at the studio 2-3 times per week, browse the yoga section at a bookstore, carve out a tranquil yoga space at home, subscribe to yoga journal, sign up for level 1 teacher training, etc.)

reflection and intentions will only carry you so far; you also have to be action minded. action won't take you in any particular direction if it isn't done with reflection and intention. you're an artist in motion, and now is the perfect time to begin treating your life with the sacredness and creativity it deserves.

if you fall short on a new year's intention mid-month, pick yourself up, honor your effort, and adjust your expectations accordingly. it isn't possible to be one person on december 31, and a freshly transformed person on january 1. i've read that habits take a shocking 21 days to change. transformation takes time and numerous baby steps (and falls).

acknowledge your progress and reward yourself along the way with simple, luxe indulgences. a few of my favorites include: taking hot baths, browsing at a bookstore, taking a restorative yoga practice, eating a yummy meal, sipping pomegranate tea, dancing to madonna, learning a new skill — hip hop dance, knitting, sewing, french.

as my favorite marianne williamson poem states, "we are all meant to shine and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same." let your inner light sparkle in 2007 through ongoing reflection, intention, and action. watch amazing things unfold. the potential that lies within you is infinite. take some sacred time to mold it and then live out loud. wear red, learn the tango, study art, try meditating, write a novel. may this be your best year yet!

xoxo,
kimberly wilson

teacher feature

siobhan troy

siobhan troyexhale.

something we do automatically. but it's funny how many times during one day we have to remind ourselves or others to exhale. i know that any tranquil space student is used to hearing that while attending class, but who reminds you to do that at other times? it is such a powerful release, to take a moment to exhale and really let go.

do you rehash an event or experience that you regret? exhale and give yourself permission to let it go. sometimes we have to literally give ourselves permission to let go; hanging onto something in the past will only weigh you down emotionally.

do you get tense when you see a particular number on the caller id? exhale, since the drama in your head is probably 10 times worse than the actual conversation.

when entering a room for a social or professional gathering and realizing you don't know a soul . . .exhale. no one will bite and you never know what you might learn or who you might meet.

do you get anxious when you know you are being evaluated? exhale . . . we can benefit and grow from constructive feedback. And no one is perfect — what fun would life be if we all were?

did the holidays leave you drained (emotionally and/or physically)? exhale . . . take some time to unwind, prop your feet up, take a nice hot bath, or — better yet — get a massage.

our breath is a powerful tool, and it is always with us. it is amazing how a big sigh can make you feel so much better and relaxed. i love to have students do simhasana (lion), especially at the end of class. if you really let the exhale "roar" out of you, it makes savasana feel that much more relaxed.

the asana of the month is chaturanga, and it is the perfect pose to focus on your exhale. let your exhale bring you power; using your exhale in your practice can show you a new aspects of yourself. it can show you that you are more powerful than our minds tend to believe. then take that power in yourself and transfer it into the rest of your day. the power to meet new challenges, the power to see things in a new way, the knowledge that: "we are powerful beyond measure." — marianne williamson

january means getting back to our usual routines. exhale, and know that each day is a new canvas. what happened last week, last month, or even five minutes ago is history. we can't change it, we can only learn from it and move forward. so, exhale, let go of whatever is holding you back in this moment, and see all the incredible potential that lies within.

may 2007 bring you many blessings.

asana of the month

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

yogi of the month

this title is reserved for yogis who have shown a strong dedication to their practice, are enthusiastic about their growth, and enjoy sharing it with others.

my yoga journey actually began three years ago this month. i was originally interested in the physical aspects of yoga. after 12 years of running and rowing, sports injuries started to surface. yoga was difficult for me at first due to my extremely competitive nature. once i had overcome that obstacle, the benefits were instantaneous. after becoming comfortable with the physical practice i sought to learn the mental and spiritual beliefs. my profession as a pharmacist could be quite stressful and i realized that i needed a way to handle it better. it was at that time that i began the level one teacher training at tranquil space. i cannot begin to explain the ways in which i have grown. my next endeavor will be the level two teacher training. i am so fortunate to have found tranquil space in the midst of this fabulous journey. thank you!

tranquilTeam player of the month

this title is reserved for members of our team who embody the tranquil space values, excel in their role at the studio, and have a passion for their practice.

gina kelleygina kelley

before i began working at tranquil space almost two years ago as director of the studio, i worked at a few different busy non-profits in the area. i knew that much of my management and operations experience would transfer over to the yoga studio environment, but i never quite realized how much goes into running a business and what an enormous team it takes to create tranquil space. from kimberly's creative vision and energy to the dedicated managers who drive the boutique and office, to the friendly and helpful studio assistants, there are so many teammates that i am lucky and thankful to work with. the team also includes treatments therapists, teaching assistants, two towel assistants who manage all the rental towels, a cookie monster who brings in those yummy cookie treats, a supply runner who keeps us stocked up on essentials, and, of course, the teaching team members who lead classes and workshops, of which i also enjoy being a part.

with so much going on behind the scenes, especially behind the front desk, it's great also to work with yogis who are so dedicated to their practice, and who make the effort to practice their yoga on the mat and off the mat when interacting with the front desk. thanks to kimberly for nicely nudging me into the spotlight as january's team player. i try my best to juggle many roles and contribute what i know to tranquil space, so that it can be a haven to all who seek it out in our urban environment. i wish everyone on the team a happy new year! xo, gina
