“it's time to start living the life you've imagined.” ~ henry james

ahhh, the hope of a new year, a clean slate, and a fresh start. a brand new year awaits you. the possibilities are endless. a new beginning is offered every day. each morning you are given a fresh canvas on which to paint. you choose the paint colors, the strokes, the pace, and the other players. your life is a constantly evolving work of art. create your new year consiously through reflection, intention, and action.

reflect on lessons learned in 2005. write out a year in review. note what lessons came up for you, how you will handle things differently, and what you have to be grateful for from these key experiences. next, set your intentions by getting them down on paper and staying mindful of them throughout your day. collage or write out on paper what you want 2006 to look like. create action steps on how you plan to get there. post these action steps where you see them every day — on your refrigerator, by your bed, in your office, on your car visor! (example intention: i want my yoga practice to grow. action steps: commit to a daily home practice starting at just 10 minutes, practice at the studio 2-3 times per week, browse the yoga section at a bookstore, carve out a tranquil yoga space at home, subscribe to yoga journal, sign up for level 1 teacher training, etc.)

if you fall short on a new year's intention mid-month, pick yourself up, honor your effort, and adjust your expectations accordingly. it isn't possible to be one person on december 31, and a freshly transformed person on january 1. i've read that habits take a shocking 21 days to change. transformation takes time and numerous baby steps. acknowledge your progress and efforts on a regular basis. reward yourself along the way with simple, luxe indulgences. a few of my favorites include: taking hot baths, browsing at a bookstore, taking a restorative yoga practice, eating a meal that nurtures my insides, dancing to madonna's latest tunes, learning a new skill — hip hop, knitting, sewing, ballet.

take steps daily that bring you closer to the chic and conscious lifestyle you crave. reflection and intentions will only carry you so far; you also have to be action minded. action won't take you in any particular direction if it isn't done with reflection and intention. you're an artist in motion, and now is the perfect time to begin treating your life with the sacredness and creativity it deserves.

as my favorite marianne williamson poem states, "we are all meant to shine and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same." let your inner light sparkle in 2006 through ongoing reflection, intention, and action. watch amazing things unfold. the potential that lies within you is infinite. take some sacred time to mold it and then live out loud. wear red, learn the tango, study art, try meditating, write a novel. may this be your best year yet!

thank you for continuing to share your amazing spirits with me. for more musings on making 2006 fabulous, listen here.

happy, happy new year,
kimberly wilson

“life is either a daring adventure,
or nothing at all.” ~ helen keller

my yoga journey continues to grow and morph into a lifestyle. when i began this journey a decade ago, i was delighted to find a way to blend mind and body work together. i had no way of knowing the path that my first class would take me on while living in the mountains of colorado. as an aspiring psychologist turned paralegal turned yoga teacher, i am constantly surprised of the turns my 32-year-old life has taken since i discovered yoga.

after graduating with a psychology degree, i backpacked around europe for three months with the savings i'd acquired in college while working my $4/hour job. there's nothing like moving outside of your comfort zone and plopping yourself into the center of a different culture, language, and social norms (you mean white tennis shoes aren't cool?). the dynamics of people outside of oklahoma (especially europe) are VERY different than what i knew growing up in the midwest.

after this experience i moved to colorado to ski, snowboard, and live for almost a year before traveling cross-country to dc to attend georgetown's paralegal school. after completion of the program, i knew reality and retirement planning would begin. so i took three more months and drove from dc to alaska, all the way down the west coast, and back. during this time i slept in my car, brushed my teeth in gas stations, glimpsed grizzly bears, walked on a glacier, became intrigued with anais nin, and devoured any book i could during the long drives. then the pursuit of a legal job began that lasted two years before i took my first yoga teaching training. that's when i truly fell in love with the idea of sharing this practice. i come from a family of teachers and believe it is in my blood. i love connecting with students, watching them open up during a class, and seeing them leave feeling better than when they arrived — a truly rewarding experience.

after inviting strangers into my living room in 1999, i left my full-time job to become a self-employed yoga teacher shortly thereafter. i knew nothing about business or working for myself but i knew my soul had to take the leap in order to stay authentic. i share my winding story with you to encourage you to find your edge in the new year and to leap into unknown territory. i truly believe that it is better to try something and fail than to live a life of "what if's."

yoga has become my saving grace. it's a subject i can't get enough of, and i love exploring how it relates to my busy life as a studio owner, mother (to louis the pug), partner, friend, designer, teacher, student, writer — the numerous roles we all hold. someone recently asked me why i practiced yoga. i found the question to be simple, yet profound. why do i practice yoga? because it feels good, makes me a better person, opens my heart, allows me to find space . . . i could go on and on.

i think an even more powerful question is, "how does my yoga practice translate into my life?" what is the point of practicing if it's only a series of poses, and then we return to the same state we've been in for years? life is a series of two steps forward, and one step back. yet, with the practice of yoga, we're constantly moving toward a more mindful existence. this can play out through conscious consumption of products and food (bramacharya), avoiding harmful thoughts or actions (ahimsa), reflection (svadhyaya), and discipline (tapas). we're all such beautiful works in progress. our practice allows us to explore this is a safe, nurturing environment where we are able to connect to our authentic selves. listen within, observe your sensations, find your edge, and breath through challenge.

my yoga practice has taken me so much further than i ever dreamed. it gave me the confidence to fulfill a need for a special type of yoga studio that nurtures others and gives them the tools to translate the practice into their urban lifestyles. i credit the creation of tranquil space to my practice and continued search for creative outlets. as we continue to offer you more ways to live a chic and conscious lifestyle, i want to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you. living out loud is all about being of service, and i hope tranquil space continues to serve you in the ways that my practice continues to serve me. namaste.

dan:

so i was a yoga skeptic. my girlfriend (and co-yogi of the month) used to always try to get me to go. one day, feeling sluggish, stressed out, and a bit venturesome, i caved in. the rest, as they say, is history.

i still remember entering the very pink studio for the first time. the staff was welcoming and helped me find the perfect — and not soooo feminine — yoga mat and bag (thank you, marianne). i had my first class with gina. though i came in with no idea of a down dog, her gentle guidance and soothing voice got me through. talk about having your cake and eating it too: i just love the tea and cookies after every class. the workshops are also great (especially kimberly's so-called slow flow class).

yoga has given me more energy, a fuller breath, and greater serenity. the studio is truly a community with attention to all the little things. thanks for helping me to create a tranquil space within!

rhodo:

Home
tranquil space
such a different pace
and place
from what is just outside.
inside awaits:
pink, purple, flowers and polka dots,
a base where vinyasa flow is taught.
who would've known
a gem among stones,
that this studio would be the key
to my sanity and tranquility.
teachers all smiles,
students all filed
up at the door
waiting for
an experience, a chance
to engage in a dance-like yoga.
to transform their inner storm,
a time to be reborn
into peace and quietness,
strength and calmness.
flexible bodies and minds,
we intertwine,
twist around, upside down
and out we come
balanced, refreshed and wrinkle-free
followed by cookies and tea.
i always knew
that this was the place to be.
and with nothing more to say,
besides namaste,
this has been a poem,
all about Home.

heather riemanheather rieman

almost two years ago i started practicing yoga at tranquil space after a little encouragement from fellow yogi marissa jones. i had no idea what an integral part of my life it would become. in april of 2005 i left my full time job to start critical exposure, a non-profit organization that teaches inner-city students documentary photography and helps to advocate for better and more equitable schools. i wasn't sure how i was going to be able to afford to continue yoga but i knew i would need it more then ever.

kimberly, always supportive of local charities and organizations run by women, agreed to let me do odd jobs around the studio in return for classes. now, i've put my skills to use and i am the handyperson for tranquil space. you may see me hammering, changing a light bulb, or painting the walls the latest color. i enjoy being part of the team that helps to ensure tranquil space is such a welcoming and special place to practice.

tranquil space has not only helped me to challenge and strengthen my body but has helped me carry a number of lessons off the yoga mat and into my life. i've learned to find my edge and be content with where i am at the moment, to keep the creativity flowing, and how to let go of some of the stress from running a start up non-profit. i feel honored to be part of the tranquil space community. namaste.
