studio happenings

  • At our 4th annual holiday party, Tranquil Space collected over 50 canned good items for the Capital Area Food Bank and raised $277 for Bread for the City. Thank you to all the fabulous yogis that attended this festive and karmic event! View holiday celebration photos. A very special thank you for celebrating the season with Tranquil Space.
  • Slightly revised winter schedule! We still have 42 weekly yoga classes but have made a few shifts; please view our 2004 schedule.
  • Class price increase. Effective January 1, 2004, drop-ins at the studio will increase to $16 and class passes by approximately $1 each. Tranquil Space has not increased its fees in over 3 years, since the studio began in Kimberly's living room. We appreciate your understanding, as our expenses have risen extensively since our earlier days. Please take this into consideration when purchasing passes in December as you'll have all month to get the current rate. Visit our updated class pricing list to view our 2004 rates.
  • Lots of great workshops coming this year — a book club, women's creativity circle, off the mat series, and more! Visit our enlightening events page for details!
  • Escape the chill of winter and join Kimberly in Costa Rica February 14-21!
  • Teacher training at Tranquil Space. We now offer 3 options to assist your exploration of teaching vinyasa or simply deepening your own practice. Level 1 begins January 16 and Level 2 begins January 30.
  • We now have scan cards for our pass holders to help expedite your check-in process! Please arrive a few minutes early in the New Year to pick yours up.
  • Rent the studio for your own practice or event. Visit our studio rental page for details.
  • Newbie Yogi Series coming again on Saturdays and Sundays in January! A 4-week series catered to the developing, inquisitive yogi. Visit the newbie yogi series page for details!
  • Prenatal time change in 2004. Join Anne in the new year at a new time! Beginning Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, prenatal yoga will be held in the sky studio from 12:15 - 1:30 instead of 4:30 - 5:45.
  • Baby and me classes with Carol and her baby now on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Ongoing offerings:
    • 3 for $33. A wonderful gift idea for someone new to Tranquil Space!
    • Interested in free yoga? Visit studio opportunities for our current openings.
    • Refer a friend who buys a pass and receive a free class! Have your friend fill out a referral card with your name on it and hand it to the studio assistant when purchasing their class pass. Valid only for first-time pass purchases.
    • Yogi Babies online! Share your photos of your beloved babies with us and let us welcome them into the community. Send photos and names to info@tranquilspace.com.
    • Community Bulletin Board in the Tea Lounge. Let your fellow yogis know about your cooking classes, dog walking services, or need for a roommate by posting notices on our board. Please obtain management approval prior to posting.
    • Massage at Tranquil Space! We are pleased to offer a complement to your yoga practice. Visit our massage page for details. Gift certificates available.
    • Private Sessions are available at the studio. Please visit our private sessions page for more details.
    • Create a Tranquil Space at your office or next event! Tranquil Space offers yoga parties for any special occasion, series of classes at your office and office yoga workshops! For more information, please contact yogaoutreach@tranquilspace.com.
    • Please familiarize yourself with studio tips.
    • Please arrive 15 minutes early to guarantee your space as select classes may fill quickly. We've noted class sizes of less than 10 in pink on our website schedule.
    • Book exchange, yoga mat cleaner and more treats available in the dressing rooms and tea lounge. Enjoy!
    • Share your thoughts: We have placed a suggestions box in the swirlie hallway which awaits any comments, praise or requests our yogis may have. Or please fill out this studio survey. View our comment corner to read our replies. Thank you for sharing!

challenging yourself off the yoga mat
In yoga, we are constantly striving to deepen our practice; to grow by pushing ourselves to be uncomfortable as we work to improve strength, flexibility, mental focus, and a sense of relaxation during our asana practice. This requires courage. Personal growth requires the same type of work. It means being willing to be uncomfortable emotionally and to intentionally create opportunities to stretch ourselves metaphorically. In order to do this, we must reflect on our lives, identify issues that hold us back, and take the necessary steps to move forward. Join Peg Armstrong for an interactive workshop focused on challenging yourself off the yoga mat.

As we will move back and forth between physical and verbal modes, please wear appropriate yoga clothing. Open to all levels of yoga students. No prior writing experience necessary. big toe stretch / utthita hasta padangusthasana

Benefits: Strengthens the standing leg, strengthens and tones abdominal muscles, opens the hamstrings, teaches balance and (lots of!) humility.

yogi of the month

I started practicing yoga a few years ago because I was looking for a way to balance out my spinning workouts and I wanted long and lean muscles. My first impression was that I was far too type A for yoga and could barely tolerate a 10-minute savasana. But somehow I stuck with it and actually began to look forward to my weekly class. After a few months, I wanted something more and started exploring yoga options outside the gym. I tried a variety of styles and while I enjoyed the classes, nothing seemed to resonate with what I wanted from my practice. A friend suggested that I try Tranquil Space and promised that the class would go to eleven. She was absolutely right!

From my first yoga 2 class with Kimberly, I knew I had found a studio that offered what I wanted: A non-dogmatic, physically and mentally challenging practice. Over the past year, I received far more than a great yoga class from Tranquil Space. I found a warm, nurturing and supportive community. In order to share this experience with others, I completed level one teacher training and teach one class a week to my work colleagues. I also try to practice off the mat by staying patient while riding the metro or driving in rush hour. I am not always successful, but as Lisa always reminds us, yoga is an evolutionary process.

I was introduced to yoga 10 years ago after a car accident left me in chronic pain. Practicing yoga was the only thing that helped heal my injuries and get me off pain medication, however, as the pain decreased and my life returned to its hectic pace, yoga slowly faded into the background. For the next 9 years it resurfaced in spurts, but nothing that stuck long term. However, last year I decided I needed to do something for me — something that would ground me, give me that famous yoga body, and help me meet new people since I was fairly new to DC — so I returned to yoga, once again. As the cliche says, I found so much more. Practicing at Tranquil Space has allowed me to discover old and new parts of myself. It has helped me become a stronger and nicer person. It's also teaching me that life is a practice, not a laid out plan, and that baby steps are ok. My practice has evolved from an on-the-mat physical experience into an off-the-mat life practice, which sometimes falls flat on its face, but which I practice as best I can each day.

I look forward to walking in the door of Tranquil Space to work as a Studio Assistant or to practice yoga because I know that I will leave a happier and more peaceful person. For the first time in my life, yoga doesn't seem like a chore, but instead is a joy that I look forward to each day. Tranquil Space has introduced me to an amazing group of people. Each person I've met has their own story and in their lives I have found inspiration, courage, and strength to change my own life for the better. They've helped me deal with the end of a long term relationship and have helped me find the courage to begin a career change. In January, I start the Level 2 Teacher Training program and couldn't be more excited to expand my yoga experience to teaching. So thank you to all of the amazing students and teachers, who have unknowingly taught me invaluable lessons by coming to the studio, rain or shine, and sharing your practice and stories with me. I am a better person because of it. As Darren John Main says in the Path of the Urban Mystic, in a yogic life there is no room for guilt, but plenty of room for growth. I look forward to growing with you.

Namaste.

reflective closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"January, the month of new beginnings and cherished memories, bekons. Outside the temperature drops as the snow falls softly. All of nature is at peace. We should be, too. Draw hearthside. This is the month to dream, to look forward to the year ahead and the journey within."
~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

Happy new year! A clean slate, a chance to start anew, a fresh beginning into the life we hope to live. This is the time of year to reflect on where it is that we want to be by the end of the year, what aspirations lie within, and what dreams we hope to uncover. Often times this can be overwhelming which may result in inaction or a sense of failure. Allow this year to be different. Begin by evaluating where you'd like to see yourself in one month, six months, one year, five years — whichever amount of time feels reasonable for where you are right now. Set small goals and gradually built up to the lofty ones. Allow yourself to explore not only goals but aspirations, those longings deep within that have been ignored as unrealistic. These are what make you unique, make you feel in love with life, make you step out of the comfort zone into the life you're born to live.

A few minutes of time alone each day can help you reconnect with these lost parts of your soul that get drawn up in the day to day minutiae. A few small steps can get you closer to those dreams of throwing caution to the wind and doing the things that excite you. During a challenging yoga class, I love to remind my students (and be reminded myself) that it is important to find your edge, in practice and life. Reaching past boundaries and exploring new territories is an example of a life well lived. How will you step out of security and life as you know it this year? There's no better time than now to begin pondering the new year in front of you.

"Wear red . . . cut your hair . . . study art in Paris . . . learn the tango, your authentic self has not abandoned you. Instead she has been waiting patiently for your to recognize her and connect. Turn away from the world this year and begin to listen. Listen to the whispers of your heart. Look within. Your silent companion has lit lanterns of love to illuminate the path to Wholeness. At long last, the journey you were destined to take has begun."

~ Sarah Ban Breathnach
