Soul Yoga Practice with Ira Rosen

soul yoga practice with ira rosen: vinyasa yoga from the heart
As we mature in our practice of Vinyasa Yoga, we experience many stages of evolution. We see that for the most part, our tools (asana, pranayama, meditation, and chanting) remain the same, yet what changes is our relationship to them. The initial stages of resistance in the body and mind gradually transform into acceptance and peace. Finally, our practice blossoms into a heart based spiritual offering.

In this session with Ira Rosen, step into Vinyasa Yoga from the Heart: Our yoga practice will transform into a prayer as we ride a steady stream of flowing devotional energy to the Soul! Ultimately , our intention is to take this way of practicing off of our mats and into our everyday lives: and serve humanity selflessly!

This 3-hour workshop will include a challenging Vinyasa flow class suitable for Tranquil Space levels 1-3 (some experience at Level 1 is preferred). Bring an open mind and open heart!

asana of the month
lolasana/swing pose

Lolasana builds awareness in the core of the body. It helps to build abdominal and arm strength while encouraging usage of uddiyana banda. Two opposing forces work powerfully to create the dynamic lifting action present in this pose. The arms must extend as the hands press fully into the earth and the hips lift up and swing back. Featured on the cover of this month's Yoga Journal!

I recently had two "yoga moments." The first moment came when I did Eight Limb Staff Pose for the first time. This is a pose that I thought would take 10 years of practice and 6 months of study at an ashram in India for me to pull off. So when I got into the pose, I was elated, and I had this moment where my body was doing the pose and my mind was saying "oh my gosh.I can't believe your body is doing this!" While the pose is challenging, it wasn't the sort of grunting, sweating challenge that I'd imagined it would be. That was the moment - it wasn't about achieving a goal; rather, it was about uncovering a potential that I didn't even know I had.

The second "yoga moment" came when I was in Crow Pose and I fell on my face (this is not a metaphor - I fell directly onto my face). My usual tendency would be to see this as a failure. But instead, I saw it as something of a yoga milestone. I said to myself "OK, fell on my face in a yoga pose. I can scratch that off my list!" That was another moment - the ability to see a challenge not as a failure, but as a point on a journey.

The teachers, studio assistants, and students at Tranquil Space have created the warm, safe, fun, and nurturing environment that have helped me find these moments in my practice. I'm looking forward to sharing these and more moments with my fellow Tranquil Space yogis in 2003!

I started practicing yoga 2 years ago as a stressed out med student in Madison, WI. At the time, I felt I had no escape from the constant studying and I was having trouble focusing on my work. My sister suggested yoga. I came out of my first class feeling like my mind had a chance to rest for the first time in months. My muscles were delightfully loose and elastic from practicing an exercise like none I had done before and I felt like was at least three inches taller. I was thrilled.

When I moved to D.C., I was nervous about finding a yoga studio. (Believe me, this was up there on my list of concerns with "finding a place to live" and "making ends meet.") I wondered if D.C. would offer the sort of small yoga community I was used to in Madison. Would the faces in my yoga classes here become familiar? Will the instructors remember my name?

My neighbor told me about Tranquil Space. I was skeptical ... could finding my new yoga studio be that easy? On my first visit, I knew it was a special place. I found the environment of the studio very soothing and inviting with its windows, plants, music, and candles. The workout was challenging and intense, but also peaceful and calming at the same time.

I have come to realize that my favorite part of class comes after class, while we enjoy our tea and cookies. With everyone rested and relaxed, the conversations come easily. At my first class, for example, it came out that another student in the class went to the University of Wisconsin (Go Badgers!) while another was from Madison, her father a professor at my medical school. We chatted away. I felt right at home. I've been finding things in common with my classmates over tea and cookies ever since.

My experience with Tranquil Space has been rewarding in so many ways. The classes are exhilarating and challenging, and the staff works hard to make it an amazing experience. I have enjoyed contributing to Tranquil Space as a studio assistant as much as I have enjoyed practicing there. It is the yoga community I was hoping for.

reflective closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"January, the month of new beginnings and cherished memories, bekons. Outside the temperature drops as the snow falls softly. All of nature is at peace. We should be, too. Draw hearthside. This is the month to dream, to look forward to the year ahead and the journey within. "
~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

Happy new year! A clean slate, a chance to start anew, a fresh beginning into the life we hope to live. This is the time of year to reflect on where it is that we want to be by the end of the year, what aspirations lie within, and what dreams we hope to uncover. Often times this can be overwhelming which may result in inaction or a sense of failure. Allow this year to be different. Begin by evaluating where you'd like to see yourself in one month, six months, one year, five years -- whichever amount of time feels reasonable for where you are right now. Set small goals and gradually built up to the lofty ones. Allow yourself to explore not only goals but aspirations, those longings deep within that have been ignored as unrealistic. These are what make you unique, make you feel in love with life, make you step out of the comfort zone into the life you're born to live.

A few minutes of time alone each day can help you reconnect with these lost parts of your soul that get drawn up in the day to day minutiae. A few small steps can get you closer to those dreams of throwing caution to the wind and doing the things that excite you. During a challenging yoga class, I love to remind my students (and be reminded myself) that it is important to find your edge, in practice and life. Reaching past boundaries and exploring new territories is an example of a life well lived. How will you step out of security and life as you know it this year? There's no better time than now to begin pondering the new year in front of you.

"Wear red...cut your hair...study art in Paris...learn the tango, your authentic self has not abandoned you. Instead she has been waiting patiently for your to recognize her and connect. Turn away from the world this year and begin to listen. Listen to the whispers of your heart. Look within. Your silent companion has lit lanterns of love to illuminate the path to Wholeness. At long last, the journey you were destined to take has begun." ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

Many blessings and hope for a year lived fully,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love. May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
