yogi(s) of the month
January Tranquil Space gratefully honors a wonderfully dedicated father and daughter, Bill & Kattrina Hancy, who commute from the Baltimore area for our classes! A fellow JHU Fellow introduced Bill to yoga at Kimberly's Tranquil Space in late 2000. He claims that the timing was perfect in his life for calmness, serenity, and spirituality were destined. Bill thought he would "try" yoga, figuring it to be a fad or just a phase. But after his first hour and fifteen-minute session, his life was renewed, and is again on all Thursdays. Bill's yoga practice ameliorates his wholeness making him feel cleansed, invigorated, and inspired. It has filled a void of self-awareness and self-appreciation providing a meaningfulness to which he aspires. 6 months into his practice, he invited his daughter, Kattrina, to the experience. Together they take the 35-mile trip to Tranquil Space having practiced together ever since.

Kattrina writes about her Tranquil Space yoga experience, "I think that yoga has helped bring structure and meaning to my life. It reminds me that life isn't only about one thing, like school or work, but more about how I relate to school and work and to myself. Practicing yoga allows me to become more centered and less stressed. I feel invigorated and renewed and that is always a good feeling. Yoga is also something that my father and I can do together. Although it's a long trek, I live in Baltimore, I don't mind much at all. I don't actually see my father very often and yoga gives us the opportunity to partake in something together. The atmosphere at Tranquil Space allows me to feel comfortable with myself and with my practice; I do not feel the drive to be perfect. Yoga has made me a better person by allowing me to be more relaxed and more aware of myself." Congratulations Kattrina and Bill Hancy. Thank you for your continued dedication toward your practice & Tranquil Space!

kimberly's closing

Every new year is a gift to the spirit. May your days be blessed with inspiration and the kind of music that only the heart can hear. ~ Flavia

A new year is upon us. A clean slate fresh with opportunity and ripe with possibility. The beginning of a new year is always an ideal time to reevaluate our lives and our current situation. However, after the first few weeks of eating healthier, exercising regularly, and basically being on our best behavior, we often feel discouraged once the backsliding inevitably begins. A binge at a fast food restaurant, the decision to watch tv rather than attend yoga class, one too many glasses of wine, or the inability to keep up the daily writing of a future best-seller can easily send a person into a mental state of defeat.

Yet, do not despair. I encourage you to let this new year be different. Begin by thinking of where you want to be, who you want to be, and how you want to feel at the END of 2002! Set small, accomplishable goals and begin today, right now, with baby steps. Notice how your simple actions and visionary thinking can draw you closer toward the life of your dreams in a seemingly effortless manner. Remember that the key to a fulfilled life is living with a sense of purpose coupled with awareness of how we respond to and create our own reality.

In the upcoming months, use this sense of awareness through exploring the power of yoga in your daily life. Notice how you feel when you approach the mat, and notice how you feel when you leave the mat. Allow the transformation of your life to remain during your yoga practice through continued consciousness of sensations, evolution and fearlessness in poses, cultivating a one-pointed mind, and any resistance or attachment you have to a certain way of doing things. Your yoga practice can bring up many issues that you deal with in your everyday life, and I encourage you to use the new year as a way to truly observe, off of the mat, the prayer we recite at the end of class. (see below) May this new year bring you the happiness you deserve, the discipline to live filled with awareness, and the belief in the power of yourself to shape the world.

Blessings,
Kimberly

May our bodies and minds be healthy. May our thoughts be filled with love.
May our practice be free of obstacles. May we carry its benefits into the world.
