"what you do speaks so loud, i can’t hear what you say" – emerson

bonjour from boulder, colorado. i’m here
taking a course at naropa university on authentic leadership. i love that we
start each day with 30 minutes of meditation. what a perfect way to set the tone
for all the information that follows! i’ve learned about conscious
conversations, personal responsibility, ensuring values are in line with
actions, and how fun it is to dance. tonight’s session ended with us moving to
salsa tunes. now, that’s fun leadership!
our journey into a new home continues to be an exciting part of my world at this
moment. with intense aspiration to personalize it and make the space
super-special, my contractor now has me shaking hands on decisions such as how
many chandeliers he’ll allow. I like sparkles! my desire to have speakers and
chandeliers in the bathrooms, an herb garden out back, a loft space for the
team, and indecisiveness on where the ice-maker should go is killing him. god
bless his patient soul!
we’ve located flooring for the spa and top sky-lit studio from a barn in
virginia. our contractor is big on reusing rather than tossing materials to buy
brand new green ones. the tea bar benches are set up on used tree grates found
on craig’s list. reuse, reuse, reuse. the new windows were put on last weekend
so now the workers aren’t co-existing with the pigeons and we’re sure to be more
energy efficient. the dry wall is about to go up, bathrooms and showers are
getting installed, and soon i’ll start sewing some curtains and throw pillows.
love the details!
we hope to have our new home ready to welcome you mid-spring. i’m already
planning the open house soiree complete with yoga demos, tea tastings, and an
eco-fashion show. i’m delighted to take tranquil space to this new level and
welcome your input as we’re creating its destiny and your new yoga home. we plan
to offer 50 fabulous yoga classes – including a few more specialties, DIY
classes for you contemplative crafty ones, oodles of spa treatments, tasty fair trade tea, and
an eco-fabulous boutique featuring
TranquiliT please let me
know if you have any special requests. the joy i’ve received over the (almost)
nine years of tranquil space is immeasurable – so immense, so full! thank you
for your continued support of all things tranquil.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson

loving kindness
the phrase loving kindness may be one you have heard in class, it is the idea of
“the heart (being) fully awake in friendliness, compassion, and empathic joy”
from yoga journal online. it is showing respect or unconditional love toward
ourselves and others no matter the situation or circumstance.
loving kindness in all situations, your first reaction to that statement may be
similar to mine, that is very challenging if not impossible. but then again if
it was easy our world would be a very different place wouldn’t it? i don’t
believe that life was meant to be a “walk in the park.” we are meant to learn as
we live.
so, february is celebrated as the month of love, which is a wonderful concept so
why not think of it as the month of loving kindness too. let yourself be “fully
awake in friendliness, compassion, and empathetic joy” toward yourself and
others.
as always the yoga mat is a great place to put this into practice. start by
observing how you react to the challenges there or how you speak to yourself
since this is reflective to how we react and speak to ourselves off the mat. so,
start with loving kindness toward yourself on the yoga mat no matter the pose or
sequence. let that be your training ground to how to incorporate loving kindness
throughout your life.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

i started practicing yoga 5 years ago to
balance long distance runs and help the back pain i had from scoliosis. i
practiced at a studio that taught primarily inyengar until last spring,
when i attended my first class with a friend at tranquil space. i had
never tried vinyasa before. as i struggled to keep up as we flowed through what
seemed like four times the number of poses normally completed in an inyengar
class, i felt my active, stressed "washingtonian" mind slow. after class, i felt
renewed, warm, and relaxed (and lightly lavender scented!)
yoga has given me so many things: the ability to free myself from stiff joints
after long runs, physical strength, balance, the skills to find peace in chaos
of every day life, as well as some wonderful friends. tranquil space has helped
me find these things in my yoga practice in a warm, inviting atmosphere. but i
have to say that at the end of the day (literally and figuratively), there is
something so fun about a warm up vinyasa up to "kung fu fighting" and a sequence
of balancing poses to thievery corporation, while sharing the space with such
wonderful people. and that's what keeps me coming back each
week.

it may sound silly, but it took me a long time
to figure out what yoga teachers meant by "return to your breath" or "find your
breath". it has been almost a year since my husband left the military and we
left, for better or for worse, a community that had been with and supported us
through the tumult that has been the past few years. the transition to civilian
life seemed, to me, quite easy at the time. it would be some months before i
realized i held on to leftover tendencies to get too wrapped up in routines, to
move at the speed of light and not take anything in, to not get too connected,
and to shelve my own interests and hopes, telling myself the time was just not
right, but promising to return to them someday. it amazes me how we, as human
beings, are capable of adapting so well to many situations. life goes on during
wartime, during long separations and repeated goodbyes, and through many moves.
you develop your own systems for getting
through them the best you can, but it can come at a price. my return to tranquil
space as a team member threw me directly into the paths of many, many creative,
inspiring, generous and loving souls. so many people, so many stories, and so
much talent and hope flows through this place that it is impossible not to be
affected. i was a little wobbly for awhile, but slowly i began to find my
balance again. new faces have become dear friends. the passion i see in others
for their various endeavors inspires me to re-seek my own. on the mat as well as
in life and work, i am reconnecting with my stability, flexibility and fluidity.
suddenly, i have a community again. suddenly, i have found my breath :)

do you ever wonder what the differences are between different types of massage?
are you looking for something in particular but are unsure what to ask for? in
the coming months we will put the spotlight on different treatments and their
benefits that currently offered or in the works for our spa at tranquil space.
what is reflexology? dating back to the ancient orient, reflexology was
first introduced in the west in the early 20th century as "zone therapy",
reflecting the idea that certain reflex areas on the feet and hands correspond
to organs and systems of the body in the same "zone". Eunice Ingham further
developed the zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed
that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the
corresponding part of the body, and that stimulation of these areas with
pressure can affect these organs and systems.
new this month: prenatal thai
yoga bodywork is now available in 60 minute and 90 minute sesions!
tranquil treatments is growing with the opening of the new studio this spring!
we are pleased to announce that we will be offering our yummy treatments out of
three private treatments rooms, which means we will be able to give you that
