“to love yourself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.”
~ oscar wilde

welcome to a month focused on love and filled with yummy carnation hearts, chilly weather, and whispers of adoration. i like to think of self-love as an underlying theme for february. even if you don't have a valentine, love can still be your focus this month by encouraging the focus inward. as a favorite julia cameron quote suggests, "there is a direct connection between self-nurturing and self-respect." ensure you're loving yourself fully this month by engaging in oodles of self-care.

as a girl who is constantly on-the-go, i find that taking the time to practice self-care can have profound results — especially during a dreary month like february. a few simple, yet sanity-saving, tools are journal writing, getting a massage, practicing yoga, sitting still (aka meditating), having a good heart-to-heart with a trusted girlfriend, taking hot baths, sipping green tea or hot cocoa topped with whipped cream, and shaking up your routine by doing things differently.

yoga means union and, as practitioners, we're seeking union within our mind, body, and spirit. creating balance within your life is the ultimate way to live your yoga practice and evoke self-care. asana — the physical practice of yoga — is only one of the eight limbs of yoga. the others involve meditation, living the moral codes such as non-violence and truth, and breathing consciously.

reflect on the ways that your yoga can become a practice in self-care this month. when you're on the mat, engage in compassionate self-talk. when you're in a difficult situation, focus on the healing three-part yogic breath. when you're feeling congested or a bit down, break out your back bends.

may february reconnect you to a sense of wholeness and self-love coupled with lifelong romance.

lovingly yours,
kimberly wilson

niyati shahniyati shah

the only constant in life is change . . .

my dear teacher from grade school constantly reminded me of this "fact." change was not only inevitable, but always happening. this concept scared me for many years; as changed reared its head, i tirelessly tried to shadowbox it to the ground . . . until i realized how liberating it was to be free of that fear.

when you truly embrace this concept of change being constant . . . you have no choice but to grow, no choice but to detach, no choice but to venture inwards, touch the spirit, and find your source — the one that is responsible for keeping you grounded through the ever-changing seasons in life. regardless of what is going on in your life, it will change. whether you're feeling happy or sad, angry or calm, eventually the tide will shift. what remains the same is the spirit residing within you . . . and that is truly an empowering image. the river may rise and fall, but the water, the substance, remains the same (unless, of course, you're polluting the water — and then that's an entirely different ballgame!).

for many years i dipped my toes in and out of yoga. i knew that deepening my practice would alter things in my life, so i kept yoga at bay — just enough to flirt with it, but not enough to "fall" into it fully. there are some choices you make, and many are made for you. i realized that i needed to take the steps to make as many positive choices i could — sail my ship, not just go along for the ride. it's been a natural evolution: my numerous career changes, relationships that have come and gone, milestones, heartbreaks and celebrations and set-backs . . . and the one constant through it all — the deepening of my yoga practice. regardless of how many times i hit the mat, how far i think i've gone, i know that there is still so much room for growth. it's symbolic of how the journey of self-study never ends, as a teacher and as an eternal student.

that said, it's so easy to feel like you're falling off the boat. sometimes the waves of change rock you pretty hard, and the ego says, "let's just ride." those are the times when i am most thankful for my connection to spirit, to my source. it's that spirit that checks the ego and says, "move over, time to sail your ship." it's a big ocean of questions, and the only thing, and the best thing i can do is go through it. i sometimes picture our mats as ships . . . in the studio, everyone is on their little ship, and we're all in the same vast blue ocean.

as you move deeper into your practice, i challenge you to find connection instead of separation. ask yourself whether you're moving from a place of integrity with your source, or going along for the ride. embrace the concept of change and see how much more space it creates in your heart, and ultimately in your life.

i find that one of the most joyful elements of yoga is how my practice has evolved over time. i went to my first yoga class at a local gym for the exercise. i enjoyed it enough to ask the instructor for the name of a dc studio. when she told me about tranquil space, she gave me a bigger gift than i could have ever imagined. my practice, the studio, and the warm, compassionate teachers (though unbeknownst to them) helped me move through one of those rocky patches we all have every once in a while. my practice was my therapy and my comfort. as things in my life settled down and new chapters opened, my relationship with yoga morphed again. it became a source of joy and happiness. i began reading books about being present in my life, eating organic whole foods, and incorporating ideals like compassion and grace into my everyday interactions. i recently completed tranquil space's teacher training one, and my experience with yoga has changed in the most wonderful way yet. it is now a source of community, as often times the yogi practicing next to me or the one teaching the class is no longer a stranger, but someone who shared that fantastic weekend with me.

tranquilTeam player of the month

this title is reserved for members of our team who embody the tranquil space values, excel in their role at the studio, and have a passion for their practice.

"if we are truly not trying to get anywhere but simply allow ourselves to be here in this moment as it is, we can stumble easily upon an ancient stillness — behind and within the play of our thoughts and feelings — that in a simpler time, people found in sitting by the fire." — jon kabat-zinn

on a cold winter day in dc there is nothing better than walking into tranquil space, where it is always at least 78 degrees.

when i first moved here, almost two years ago, i was drawn to the studio because of its warmth and light. much of this glow comes from the teachers and staff who make yoga and the tranquil space community accessible. and much of it comes from students who are happy to be there.

i've been fortunate to work with so many inspiring people at 2024 p st. as a student and graduate of the teacher-training program, i have learned a tremendous amount from tranquil space teachers about yoga's power to change your perspective and help you find balance, peace, and optimism in a chaotic world. as a teaching assistant and studio assistant, i've spent time with staff and students who constantly remind me that hard work, perseverance, and a positive outlook always pay off.

so, in the spirit of valentine's day, tranquil space has been at the heart of my transformation over the last two years, and i feel lucky to have felt its love, and heat!
