this month's e-news contains:

May our bodies and minds be healthy.
May our thoughts be filled with love.
May our practice be free of obstacles.
May we carry its benefits into the world.

~ Oscar Wilde

Welcome to February! This is a special month to honor your connections with others, to note the importance of everyone who crosses your path, and to realize the power of loving yourself. For this month's opening, I wanted to share a poem by Rumi on the importance of every person who walks into one's life, which serves as a gentle reminder that you have a gift to share and that your encounters are not by accident.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture,
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

     ~ Rumi

From candied hearts to flowers and chocolate to sappy Hollywood movies, the idea of "love" can be romanticized, yet the power of special connections is truly hard articulate. These connections begin internally. Let us not forget that the most important relationship we will ever enter into is the relationship we have with ourselves. It is impossible to contribute to the happiness of another if you are not happy in yourself. It may be true that everyone we meet comes into our lives for a reason, but that does not mean we should never let go of our connections. People leave our lives for a reason as well, opening up the door for new connections and new lessons to be learned. This is the Law of Attraction.

As I reflect upon this poem and the many personalities that I've come into contact with since I started Tranquil Space, I am incredibly grateful. I think of February as a perfect time to honor these connections. May this month fill you with a sense of connection to yourself and those who enter your sacred space, but let it also give you the courage to end those connections which no longer serve you. I hope February fills you with a sense of self-compassion, gratitude, and love for the gifts that life brings every day by way of lessons and people. Happy Valentine's Day. Thank you for sharing yourself with me through Tranquil Space.

February is a fabulous month to set aside some time to celebrate life and love. But sometimes it can be heavy on the heart especially if you find you are spending it alone. Last year I sought out love's rush on the high seas and took myself sailing. This year I only need to go as far as my yoga mat because I have found someone. Every time I hit the mat, I reconnect with my most authentic Self. Who is she?! I swear if I could transcend time I'd be forever 4! She's a curious girl who isn't preoccupied with the past, aware of the future but not overly concerned with that either. She's a trusting girl, somewhat silly, fully aware and living in the present moment whether it be at play with puppies in the yard, angels in the snow, or standing on her head with her legs up against the living room wall. She's a happy girl shielded with parental love from life's harshness, left to experience and see the world as it really is with all of its beauty and knowledge of its truth. That is, a place where there is no such thing as loving too much or too deeply or having too many playmates.

Over time, I allowed life's hurts, disappointments, and losses to shield me. Burying my heart's dreams and aspirations in busyness, work, and regrets, forgetting the importance of play, rushing through precious moments, learning to hold onto everything and at the same time, holding everyone I love so dear at bay. Just waiting for life to happen, then finding myself running away from it or running at it a little too late. So it is here on the yoga mat and off where I have relearned life's most valuable lessons, the very things that 4 year old knew so innately — to love truthfully and to live fully in the present moment without fear. For that, I am celebrating this month. I am so thankful to the incredibly kind-hearted and passionate teachers at Tranquil Space for providing the safe haven I needed to further navigate the process of waking up and return to self. This journey continues for me, and I am constantly reminded through words and example to play with my edges, to practice with a light heart and open mind, to pay attention and listen to the teacher within.

To newbie and experienced yogis who are now just returning: Whatever it is that brings you to the yoga mat (i.e., a seeking, a sadness, a stirring in your soul), just be with it. Explore yourself through the poses. The compassion of these teachers will guide you. Your strength and courage and the grace of this creative space will help you weather Psyche's storm. Prepare for joy! I hope Cupid's arrow is with you this season. Namaste, Carolyn

I began practicing yoga while in graduate school in Seattle after seeing how rewarding my mom found her practice. For me, yoga has both a physical and mental attraction. I am keenly aware of both mental and physical blocks when I don't practice regularly and greatly appreciate the benefits of yoga when I do practice. Understanding that yoga is not simply an exercise program has enabled me to integrate it into other aspects of life. Yoga has helped me come to understand that the process/journey is often times more important than the results, and it's also taught me to be more patient and understanding of myself and others.

I have been fortunate to practice with a variety of instructors in different settings. This has given me an appreciation of how the interpretation and meaning of yoga is variable, yet also constant and comforting. What I really like about Tranquil Space is that it is a quiet, reflective, comforting studio and I immediately feel calmer even just after walking in the door. Thanks for making me the "Team Player" of the month and I certainly appreciate the role Tranquil Space has had in deepening my practice. Namaste!
