asana of the month
tolasana/scale pose
Tolasana builds awareness in the core of the body. It helps to build abdominal and arm strength while encouraging usage of uddiyana banda. Two opposing forces work powerfully to create the dynamic lifting action present in this pose. The arms must extend as the hands press fully into the earth and the hips lift up.
yogi of the month

The first time I visited Tranquil Space was with a friend who suggested I tag along with her and felt strongly that I would love the classes. I had been practicing all types of yoga all over town in studios and in various gyms. However, there was always something missing. Most classes were not challenging at all and if they were, they lacked the spiritual aspect. The main and most important factor for me were the teachers. I couldn't find a teacher that I was comfortable with until Tranquil Space.
As soon as I walked in, I immediately felt calm. This was certainly a very tranquil space. I was welcomed with warm smiles from the teachers as well as the students. I found my spot in class and enjoyed the relaxing and centering effects of the incense. The class flowed wonderfully and I loved the challenge of each pose - how just when you think you've got it, you can always take it one step further. Each pose is like a piece of art and the feeling of practicing yoga is like nothing else. I feel strong, yet graceful at the same time. I love how each pose is challenging, yet relaxing as if I'm gaining and letting go. So here we are, finally in the most blissful shavasana on earth. I am melting into the earth, I am enjoying the most perfect music, how can it get any better? The teacher walks over and lightly sprays me with aromatherapy! All of my senses are stimulated. Everything but taste. But if you've ever visited Tranquil Space, you know that Kimberly pays attention to every last detail. After shavasana, you are not shuffled out the door - you are served tea and cookies - my favorite detail! What a great idea!
The teachers at Tranquil Space are some of the nicest people I've ever met, and the same with the students. I have become a better person because of Tranquil Space - I am overwhelmed by positivity and acceptance and my practice thrives in this atmosphere. I always carry the benefits of this very special yoga practice into my daily life.

"Find the Tranquil Space Within"
I sought out yoga as a refuge from the craziness in my life. I was always running to catch up with the hectic pace of school, work, travel, friends, family, deadlines, appointments, marathons, yoga classes, etc., etc., etc. I was always trying to be super man. Always cramming too much into a short day. This distanced me from both my body and soul, which weren't too happy.
"Surrender Yourself to the Mat . . . Surrender Your Ego!"
When I first met Kimberly, I found a yoga style that made me pause and surrender my "to do lists." This stellar teacher focused on what was positive about me, unconditionally. She made me feel confident, while the poses humbled me. I found a place where I could retreat, yet be completely present to everything around me and within me, the pain and the bliss. It was such a change from the feeling of always having to be somewhere else, two steps ahead. Running, running, running! Yoga helped me believe that it is okay just to be present and still in the pose. It is okay to surrender and breathe.
"May We Carry Our Practice into the World"
Yoga has given me a lot more to give. As a social worker, I feel more attuned to my clients' needs. As a friend, I am more attentive and compassionate. As a teacher, I am less focused on the goal and more on the process. As a student, I am more willing to fall. As a human, I have learned to share both my laughter and tears. And yes, as a heartthrob, I have developed a sexy "yoga butt" (hee-hee)!
This spring I will be completing the Level 2 Vinyasa Teacher Certification with Kimberly, as well as my social work program at CUA. So look for me in your local yoga studio and at your neighborhood public health clinic. I'll be the one with the big smile and the cute butt!

reflective closing thoughts

|
"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable. "
~ Helen Keller

|
The year is coming to an end and many dreams or new year's resolutions may not have come into fruition. The end of the year always signals death to me, a chapter closing on my life, and a perfect time to reflect with pride on those dreams that were realized, the lessons learned, and to embody self-compassion on those stars that have yet to be captured. There is always next year, the rebirth of newness with a clean slate and enthusiasm to make even more dreams reality.
One way to honor the dying of the old self and welcome the new is through one's yoga practice. To me, yoga equates empowerment, strength and flexibility not only on the yoga mat but in one's daily life. For example, by noticing a reoccuring sense of apprehension with certain poses or a lack of desire to progress to the next level of a class, one can reflect on a similar tendency in life. The tendency to stay in the comfort zone or to practice negative self-talk by telling oneself that they aren't good enough, strong enough, flexible enough. I believe that what takes place on the yoga mat is a reflection of how one relates to life. By challenging oneself, within intelligent limits, a person can find a sense of strength to push past preconceived boundaries and find bliss in realizing their true potential. This may show up through a yoga pose or changing careers or leaving an unhappy relationship. Yoga helps to challenge and empower people both on and off the mat.
Yoga has become a way of life for me and I hope that everyone is able to find a few moments of "on or off the mat" practice for themselves during the holiday season. May this month serve as a time of honoring 2002, preparing your vision for 2003, and savoring the scents of this festive season. I look forward to celebrating the new year with you in our new Tranquil Space! Happy Holidays and thank you for your continued support.
Many Blessings and Much Gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson
