"we need to remember that we are all created
creative." – maya angelou |
|
|
bonjour and welcome to a sultry month in dc! let me
begin by expressing extreme gratitude for each of you
who walk through the doors of tranquil space. i am so
honored. as i begin work on a second book that focuses
on mindful business and lifestyle, i stand in awe at the
community that we’ve built together over the past 9
years. thank you from the bottom of my heart. tranquil
space would not be here without your amazing support.
in an effort to offer you more tranquility, we’ll be
adding more classes to our schedule. look for two 8:30pm
on-the-go flows coming your way on monday and tuesday
nights this month! more coming in september.
also, we’re offering a 1-year membership special this
month. we hope you’ll be able to take advantage of the
benefits of being a
tranquil
space member.
i’m fresh back from teaching a yoga + creativity
workshop in san francisco and taking a 2-day workshop
based on one of my favorite books. thus, i’m full of
ideas and i welcome yours. as we strive to continue to
live up to the honor of being named one of the top 25
yoga studios in the world by travel + leisure magazine,
i am continually searching for ways to offer more
tranquility to washingtonians. our goal is to offer you a
true lifestyle-focused destination where you can sip
organic tea (pots of tea and scones coming soon!), shop
for green gifts, indulge in a massage or specialty
treatment such as psychotherapy or ayurvedic
consultation, and take oodles of creative tranquil
space-style yoga classes. if there is something you
would love to see added to the tranquil space menu of
offerings, please share your ideas with us at
www.mytranquilspaceidea.com.
in addition to idea-seeking, i wanted to share with you
some inspiring insights on the interplay of yoga and
creativity.
my weekly column in the examiner has eight
weeks dedicated to this combination but i want to go a
step deeper and share how yogic principles can assist
your creative practice. we are all creative (as maya
angelou reminds us above) and are given opportunities to
express this creativity every day from the words we
choose, the way we dress, the music we listen to, and
the way we decorate our cubicles. to weave your practice
of yoga off the mat into your creativity, play with
these 5 yamas and niyamas (moral tenets of yoga):
1. tapas: discipline. in order to create a business,
book proposal, dress, or screenplay, you must set aside
time to make it happen.
2. ahimsa: kind thoughts toward self and creations. sure
your first draft might not woo the publisher, but by
editing and tweaking with compassion, you’re destined to
create a winner.
3. saucha: purity of surroundings. ensure your creative
space is inviting for creativity. it is hard to create
among chaos as you’ll constantly be pulled in other
directions to tidy, organize, or answer e-mails.
4. santosha: contentment. be proud of your creations –
however small. taking the time to honor and acknowledge
your baby steps will have a powerful motivating effect
to keep moving forward.
5. svadyaya: self-study. by taking time to reflect on
what you want, how you’re feeling, and where you’re
heading through yoga, journal writing, and meditation,
you can ensure that you stay on the right path and
continue moving forward.
may you continue to find inspiration and ways to
express creativity daily on and off the yoga mat. thank
you for allowing me to share my creative ideas with you
over the past nine years.
tranquilly yours,
kimberly wilson, creative director + founder

i've reached that point in my yoga practice where i'm
regularly asking me myself why am i practicing? for awhile i admit that i was
caught up in the physical aspects of practice and i was very focused on
mastering as many of the most challenging poses i could fine. funny thing is
mastery is a subjective word when it comes to yoga. there is always a more
challenging pose or deeper variation right around the corner. heck, right neck
to me in class might be 3 or 4 people who can take the pose deeper. looking
outward to the world for answers in a painful place to be. i began to hunger for
something deeper. i have turned inward and have begun the search for my truth.
so when i'm asked today why i practice yoga the answer is because my life has
been better over the course of my yoga practice. sure i've had my ups and downs
but the overall trend of my life has definitely been on the upswing since i
began my yoga practice 6 years ago.
when i was a young boy i had an experience which help shaped my life. i was
playing across the street with my best friend. i did something which caused my
friend pain. when my friends mother questioned me i lied. when my mom found out
what happened, after my admission of guilt, she made me go back to our neighbors
and ring the doorbell and apologize for lying. the walk over was very long but i
did apologize. the lesson that taught me has been a lesson i've carried for life
and that lesson is the importance of satya (truthfulness.)
so how does satya apply to my yoga practice on the mat. i typically ask myself
what do i need from my practice today. one day my body may be tired. if i'm
honest with myself i may find that what would serve me best is to skip a fast
paced flow class and take a meditation class instead. by being honest with
myself i align with my spirit. my goal in life is to remove those obstacles
which keep my true self hidden from myself and the world and to embrace those
practices which bring me face to face with my truth. may each traveler on the
journey of life find their own unique path.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
supta
virasana (reclining hero)
benefits
- this is a cooling pose that will give the quads an intense stretch as
well as stretching the hips, abs, and knees.
- can also help digestion.

diana
and greg morrison
with my hectic work days, greg's busy
lifestyle as a working actor/playwright/musician and the general stresses of
21st century living, we were really looking for something different to do that
would be both spiritually grounding and enjoyable. we had talked about trying
yoga for quite sometime, but kept getting distracted from actually making it
happen. i had read that yoga could also help with some of the chronic shoulder
pain i was having. greg came across tranquil space's website and we decided to
give it a try. we were so profoundly affected after our first class that we were
anxious to come back again for another class. we were pretty much hooked
instantly! we have been taking classes since february of this year and i'm so
pleased that my shoulder pain is now gone. the energy at tranquil space has
always been so positive and everyone there has been extremely helpful,
encouraging and friendly. although we don't live very close to the tranquil
space locations, we really enjoy the teachers and staff and look forward to
developing our practice there. we are both very honored to be selected as yogis
of the month and give thanks to all of you who have helped us on our journey.
one love,
diana and greg morrison

so this is my second time being team player
of the month- the first time was in december of 2002. a lot of things have
changed over these last six years. i can't believe it's been six years since i
began working here. there's been a ton of growth from church community room to
new eco-fabulous yoga flagship. also, a lot of things have changed in my life
including becoming: an experienced-certified yoga teacher (eryt), an independent
clinical social worker (licsw), and a psychotherapist. somehow all of these
changes have been a natural evolution that just had to happen. i'm grateful for
the amazing support from the unique community of yogis at tranquil space. thanks
for pushing me in the right directions while encouraging me to hold the seat of
teacher.
the seat of teacher is a very special gift. over the last few years, yoga has
become more main-stream, which is great because more peaceful practices are
needed in this world. however, with that flourish of popularity a certain
connection between teacher and student can be lost. if you only learn yoga from
a static book with pictures, an overplayed dvd, or in an anonymous class in a
strange studio, something is lost. i believe the true gift of yoga is about
connectivity- connection with self, connection with teacher, connection with
greater community, and connection with spirit. this is the connection that
defines yoga, which is also known as "yuj" or yoking.
the yogic literature defines shaktipat as a transfer of energy between student
and teacher through a special connection. shaktipat can happen in a smile or a
kind word, coaching pranayama, encouraging that "ah-ha" moment in down-dog, or
prompting the yogi to study themselves on a deeper level (svadyaya). i feel this
connection inspires the true gifts of practice. i feel humbled to have been
given this opportunity to teach while exploring and receiving these gifts.
through my studies, i have found that a good teacher is someone who communicates
with truth, compassion, peace, self-reflection, and creativity, in a very
ordinary way. that is what i hope to be. thank you again for these last few
years. -kevin
please join me for some of the exciting events i'll be leading this fall at the

greetings
from tranquility boutique manager marq few
hot
fun in the summer time! – sly & the family stone
hey everyone! well, just in time for the hottest
month of d.c.'s summer, we have received an
order of sigg bottles. they were so popular in
fact, one style sold out within a week. thanks
to the lovely jo ann, we have more on the way.
come pick up yours before they're gone!
since we are on the subject of popular and new
items, the new be present striped camis have
been very popular. in very cool colors such as
mixed berry, amber and graphite, the camisoles
come with a shelf bra and adjustable straps.
fellas, i haven't forgotten about you. i'm still
working on finding more men's items, so be
patient, as more offerings will trickle into the
boutique. as a lover of t-shirts, i had to try
my hand at 'designing' a new tranquil space
men's tee. new colors include earth ocean and
earth moss (it's just blue and green guys). be
sure to check out new be present tree tees.
these are t-shirts made of tencel, which is a
durable fabric made from recycled wood pulp. if
you love your be present shorts and practice
pants for their wicking properties, you should
take a look at these tees.
thanks to all who have purchased manduka mats
and mat saks. i am very happy at your response
and plan to keep them in the selection of mats
and mat bags in the tranquil space boutique.
this month kimberly and i will be heading to the
new york international gift fair and will be
purchasing items for the fall and holiday
season. we'll be sure to find unique and fun
things for all your gift giving needs. as
always, if you have any suggestions for the
boutique, please send them to
marq@tranquispace.com.
