"To love yourself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." ~ Oscar Wilde
|
|
In our July Hip Tranquil ChickTM workshop, we focused on the importance of living an internal love story through self-nurturing. As the Wilde quote signifies, the relationship you have with yourself (how you feel about and treat yourself) is a VERY important relationship. Actually, this is the only relationship in life that is 100% guaranteed. You are sure to wake up and go to bed with yourself every day. We all know the importance of taking care of ourselves, but is this inner-reflective love story celebrated with regular practice?
During airplane departures, emphasis is placed on putting on your own life mask before a dependent's. This theory translates into modern life. In order to be fully fabulous, you must be full, not running on "E." The active yoga-lover can get caught on the hamster wheel with the best of them, but it is important to realize when it is time to leap off, reassess, and spend some time recharging. Even though the grills are still going and the heels are kicked up, summer is slowly coming to a close and this is the perfect leisurely month to add some self-nurturing into your own life.
Build a solid relationship with you. Get back in touch with the unadulterated delights that you crave. Implement small changes into your routine that guarantee you some time to spend savoring the abundance of simple pleasures that surround you. Life is full of hidden treasures. Below are some simple tips to translate self-nurturing into reality.
Off the mat self-nurturing tips:
- Indulge in weekly solo creative excursions. Ex., visits to museums, wineries, 5 and dimes, city parks, bookstores.
- Spend $5 a week on a "luxury." Ex., lavender scented bath bombs (LUSH bombs are highly recommended), drugstore hot oil hair treatments, scented colored pencils, colorful notecards.
- Practice the 3-part yogic breath at the office, while stuck in traffic, and during your luxurious evening home alone reading.
On the mat self-nurturing tip:
One of my favorite self-nurturing poses is legs up the wall. This pose is a sure-fire way to restore and renew after a challenging day, jet lag exhaustion, or the simple everyday need to quiet the mind. Find adequate wall and floor space so that you can lie on your back and extend your legs up onto the wall (or use a chair as a substitute). Getting your hips up to the wall is the trickiest part. If your hamstrings are tight, pull your hips away from the wall a few inches so that they are more at an angle than straight up the wall. Once the legs are up and comfortable, you can take two of my favorite variations — 1) open the legs to a wide V, 2) bend the knees and place the soles of the feet together. Both variations help open the hips, awaken the inner thighs, and alleviate discomfort due to tight hamstrings. Enjoy!

My first yoga experiences were with Kimberly in the quaint, bygone era before she founded Tranquil Space. It was like this, if you can believe it: little groups of four or five people would meet in her living room, make our introductions, and then proceed to hop, flail, and roll around all over each other in more or less fruitless and comic attempts to imitate Kimberly's smiling and serene acrobatics. I was horribly out of shape and found every pose immensely difficult. When Kimberly asked what we were in the mood for I usually answered "beer!" Indeed I thought about beer a lot even when I wasn't asking for it. And though I tried desperately not to be noticed teetering and toppling over in standing pose after standing pose, I was secretly convinced that it must be abundantly clear to all that I was a hopeless case.
That was a long time ago, and I like to joke that since then Kimberly has become the C.E.O. of a multinational yoga empire and I've become the Jehovah's witness of Yoga fitness. Who would have guessed? And yet in Kimerbly's case it is not so surprising, as the seeds of her success were there from the beginning in her obvious talent, vision, and formidable drive in pursuit of her goals—as were many of the things that make Tranquil Space distinctive: the tea and cookies, the aromatherapy, the eye pillows, the readings. And soon Kimberly found Lisa and other excellent instructors, and the rest is yoga history.
My own evolution into yoga proselytizer is, on the other hand, bizarre—as my boss frequently reminds me. I really identify with the hunched over, slightly misanthropic, sedentary person I was. . . yet I now bound up escalators, organize my weekends around things that happen outdoors, love (almost) every minute of yoga, and revel in meeting new people. I'll admit that this transformation is not a complete mystery, since I know that it was loss and fear at the end of a relationship that changed my investment in yoga two years ago. Part of it was that I simply felt physically and emotionally better after class. On reflection, I think that part of it also was that, amidst much circumstantial change and disorientation, my body was one thing I could count on to be there, moment to moment, day after day. And so I had a new incentive to take care of it. Finally, part of it was certainly that as my physical strength increased and my body changed, I was surprised and delighted by what I could do, and this clear evidence that change was possible was just what I needed. I continue to enjoy this sense of possibility, and to be grateful for it. . . As I head off to hike the alps with my current love, I'll be thinking of the Eleanor Roosevelt quote hanging above the new shoe rack: "You must do the thing you think you cannot do!"

Becoming a part of Tranquil Space has changed my life for the better: mind-, body- and spirit-wise. I once had a yoga practice many years ago, which I drifted in and out of, and never quite pursued seriously. I had been feeling for some time that I needed to go back to it, but hadn't quite found the right place or teachers to inspire me enough.
Then, the first time I walked into Tranquil Space earlier this year, I knew I had found what I was looking for. The energies of calm, kindness, focus and discipline permeated the studio. From the first class, I was hooked. Every teacher inspired me, and every class challenged me in a different way. Now, my body thanks me every time I practice, and my mind reinforces the importance of it. My spirit is infused with the positive energies of the studio, every time I walk in and out. Thank you, Tranquil Space.
