full moon yoga
The luminous fullness of the moon represents plenitude, abundance, and generous blessings. Join Danielle Polen for a beautiful evening of flowing, meditative movement, featuring guided Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) by candlelight, lunar mantras, and poetic offerings. In contrast to the energetic, heating quality of sun salutations, moon salutations cultivate a sense of calm and rejuvenation, providing an opportunity to shed old layers and reaffirm our highest intentions. Come and celebrate the feeling of being fully alive, as you absorb and integrate the powerful energy and quiet beauty of the full moon.

And if she faintly glimmers here,
And paled is her light,
Yet always in her proper sphere
She's Mistress of the Night.

shelby settles

shelby settles

A few days ago, while riding the Metro, I overheard a conversation between two guys. One guy — I'll call him John — was telling the other about his car misadventures. Earlier this year, John's car was stolen. Two months afterwards, after he had settled with his insurance company, John received a ticket in the mail from the D.C. government, fining John for unpaid tickets and the cost of towing his car. John learned that his stolen car had been left on the side of the street, illegally parked, where it racked up tickets and was eventually towed. To make matters worse, in the meantime, John's driver's license had expired and the DMV wouldn't let John get a new license until he paid the fine or cleared up the mistake by writing a letter of explanation or attending some kind of hearing. He was grinning as he shared this story with his friend.

You're probably wondering what this story has to do with yoga.

I found John's attitude inspiring, and I saw a parallel to yoga in the way John handled this challenging time. John simply observed what was happening in his life, staying outside of the drama of it all. He stayed nonattached, and even found humor during a time that most people would find incredibly stressful.

Having just come out of one of the most stressful periods of my life, I look back and think how much better off I would have been had I been a little more like John. During the first four months of this year, I went through a lot of major changes: I got engaged, got my car stolen, lost my job, found a new job, studied for, took, and passed a bar exam, and trained for a marathon. I didn't always handle myself during this stressful period with the finesse of a yogi, as my wonderful mother and fiancée would testify to. Perhaps next time.

Life is full of times that are more challenging that others, just as yoga is full of asanas that are more challenging than others are. I'm working on learning to maintain the same peace and equanimity in camel as I feel in child's pose; during life's lows as during life's highs. It's a journey, and I respect the beauty of the experience.

I love being a part of the Tranquil Space team. My first experience with Tranquil Space was at the old church on 16th Street in 2002 and my first class was with Kimberly. I thought it was amazing! I continued to take classes, but a hectic work schedule and loss of inner sanctity took me away from yoga. I still received the Tranquil Space newsletters, so when the opportunity to sub as a studio assistant opened, I took it.

As a studio assistant at the front desk, sometimes I can get frazzled — but everyone is so patient and kind. Kimberly and the staff have welcomed me into the Tranquil Space family and I have accepted them with open arms. The new studio is also a pleasant setting to end or begin a work day or week. When I work at Tranquil Space, I feel as though I have walked into another world filled with soothing colors, calming quotes, and a "no shoe" policy (which I love).

The Tranquil Space family and yoga have brought peace and tranquility back into my life. I'm looking forward to progressing in class and at work. After trying many different disciplines of exercise and breathing, I am happy to return to that "Tranquil Space".

reflective closing thoughts

Kimberly Wilson

"Wherever you go for the rest of your life, you're always in the middle of the universe and the circle is always around you. Everyone who walks up to you has entered that sacred space, and it's not an accident. Whatever comes into the space is there to teach you."
~ Pema Chodron

Summer is a time of escape. People go off to the beach, to the mountains, to other states and other countries, happy to leave their daily routines and relationships for a while and meet new people. Let us take this opportunity to appreciate the gifts the people in our lives bring to us and the connections we have with them (sometimes long-standing and deep-rooted, sometimes surprisingly new and fresh), which nourish and enrich our lives. Since returning from a solo retreat to Spain in celebration of my 30th year, the notion of connection and the importance of paths crossing has weighed heavily on me and allowed me to end some "connections" that were no longer serving me.

There is a certain balance we have to find in our relationships with others. Though things need not always be perfect and smiley, and hard times are often our best teachers, we should not needlessly stay connected with people who drain our energy and upset our harmony. As stated beautifully by Dennis Augustine, "Find those persons in whose presence you feel more energetic, more creative and more able to pursue your life goals. Stay away from persons who make you feel apprehensive, or who influence you to doubt yourself. Especially stay away from persons who drain you, so that your energy is all used up in trying to maintain the relationship."

Let us not forget that the most important relationship we will ever enter into is the relationship we have with ourselves. No other person's input is so important that it should take precedence over our own common sense or intuition. It is impossible to contribute to the happiness of another if you are not happy in yourself. A favorite yoga teacher recently said during a workshop that in order to heal others, one must first be healed.

It may be true that everyone we meet comes into our lives for a reason, but that does not mean we should never let go. People leave our lives for a reason as well, and open up the door for new connections and new lessons to be learned. May these summer months fill you with a sense of connection to yourself and those who enter your sacred space, along with giving you the courage to end those connections that no longer serve you.

flashing hearts

Much love and gratitude,
Kimberly Wilson
Creative Director

May our bodies and minds be healthy.
May our thoughts be filled with love.
May our practice be free of obstacles.
May we carry its benefits into the world.
