living your practice: yoga philosophy in your daily life
For many students, yoga is much more than an exercise that is practiced a few times per week; it is a way of life. In this evening workshop with Darren Main, we will be covering many of the principles that guide a yogic lifestyle.
Rather than focus on yoga poses and breathing, we will devote our attention to the rich philosophy that yogis try to live by. The evening will include chanting, a meditation, a talk on yogic principles and time for group discussion.
- Learn about Yogic Philosophy
- Understand Why Yoga Works
- Explore the Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutra and The Upanishads
- Find Ways to Bring Yoga off the Mat and into the Rest of Life
- Learn the Art of Seated Meditation
- Deepen Your Asana Practice
the eight limbs: taking your yoga to the next level
While most styles of yoga focus on the poses (third limb) and the breathing (fourth limb), there are many other aspects of yoga. In The Yoga Sutras, Patanjali outlined eight limbs. By learning to work these other limbs into their practice, students of yoga can take their practice to the next level. In this workshop with Darren Main poses and breathing are used as a foundation for the latter limbs. By holding poses for longer periods of time, students will have the opportunity to explore the other limbs and to see how they apply to the whole of their practice, as well as to life itself.
- Discover the Rich Psychology of Yoga
- Use Poses as a Transformational Tool
- Explore the Inward Nature of Yoga
- Move Beyond Pre-conceived Limits
- Release Old Patterns (Samskaras)
- Learn to Listen to the Inner-Teacher
- Understand Yoga as a Mystical Path
- Complement Psychotherapy
- Explore The Yoga Sutra

yogi of the month
heather mcauliffe

I discovered Tranquil Space last fall when I attended one of the Wild Woman Workshops. I remember quite vividly that the entire evening felt like a magical turning point for me -- combining NIA dance, yoga and journal writing in several hours time, which ended with the unique tea & cookie sharing -- a tradition I’ve come to cherish. Then I was delighted to learn that Tranquil Space also offered regular yoga classes too!
My first introduction to yoga happened while I was living in Japan in the mid-1990's. At the time, I realized that there are many benefits of yoga practice. Then I stopped after returning to Washington and after the birth of my daughter. So after several years of break from yoga, my time at Tranquil Space has been invigorating, inspirational and an absolute joy. (And the instructors even speak English!)
Since last fall I have been attending as classes here often as my schedule allows and will say that each of the instructors have added their own special influence and gifts to my time on and off the mat. Like some of the others have said, Tranquil Space truly does have a warm, open atmosphere which encourages friendships and leaves you with a wonderful feeling. I’ve found the nurturing and creative environment and each of the instructors at Tranquil Space have encouraged me to grow my yoga practice in a gentle way that is just right and safe for me - I have so much yet to learn, and they've helped me a great deal. Attending yoga practice here has definitely become one of my favorite things to do.
My practice has truly evolved over the year. There is so far I still have to go. I still get mad at myself
sometimes if I can't get in a pose, or I am distracted by thoughts of
what happened before class. Yoga, I'm sure, will be a perpetual thing
to practice. Sometimes I think I have to be a stronger person to be happy. In fact,
that's not true. I am a very strong person. What I need to do is
realize my strength. Slowly I am doing that - realizing it organically
as I practice yoga. Thanks Kimberly!

It's hard to believe this month marks my one year anniversary teaching at Tranquil Space. The past year has been such an incredibly rewarding experience. It has been a year filled with personal growth, physical challenge and new friends. When I moved to DC last year, I was looking for my "place" and luckily a friend introduced me to Kimberly and Tranquil Space. Being new to the area, I had been on a quest for the right yoga studio, as well as the right style or tradition but didn't get that "at home" feeling until my first Yoga 2 Class at Tranquil Space. The class was outstanding! And when the cookies came out, I knew I was in love. It has been a pleasure to learn from Kimberly's amazingly warm style of teaching. The classes taught in the vinyasa tradition along with the nurturing, challenging, and down-to-earth practice, combine to create a unique yoga adventure.
Yoga for me is a very personal experience. It is a time for me to be with Me. I look at my practice as a way to balance the madness of the city life with our need for internal serenity. Yoga has taught me to quiet my mind in the middle of the craziness. Yoga has taught me to breath correctly and to honor my body's limitations without judgment. It has given me the utmost respect for the body (our soul's package) and it's remarkable capabilities. As a teacher, I get the greatest satisfaction from seeing students challenge themselves and moving their bodies in ways they never thought possible. I feel very honored to be working with such amazing students and teachers. It's nice to feel home.

kimberly's closing thoughts

|
"To practice is to pay attention to your whole life: your thoughts, your bodily sensations, and your speech and other actions. As you do, you will discover that nothing is separate from anything else. Thoughts are the sensations of the mind just as sensations are the thoughts of the body. Each moment of your life is a moment of potential practice."
~ Judith Lasater

Our yoga practice contains so much more than simply the physical asanas that we do in a class. It is truly a way of life. Many Westeners are unclear about the eight limbs of yoga, of which only one limb is the physical hatha yoga. I will touch on each limb briefly as a reminder of how yoga can merge into all aspects of our existence.
- Yama: Explains the codes of ethical behavior to be observed daily and reminds us of our responsibilities as social beings. They are restraint through nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, and non-attachment.
- Niyama: The positive current that brings discipline, removes inertia and gives shape to follow the yogic path through purity, contentment, austerity, study of the self & scriptures, and surrender to the Divine.
- Asana: One's physical hatha yoga practice.
- Pranayama: Breath or energy practice.
- Pratyahara: Detachment from the senses.
- Dharana: The ability to concentrate the mind.
- Dhyana: Meditative absorption.
- Samadhi: State of total absorption, superconsciousness.
One's yoga practice goes so much deeper than simply sun salutations and the longer you practice yoga, the more the interconnectedness of all and the karma of our actions is realized. How can we best take the centuries old tenets of yoga described by Patanjali and incorporate them into the present moment? How about beginning right now by simply becoming present? This is the continuous challenge of life and yoga -- enjoying the here and now. May the end of summer bring you a chance to sit with yourself, enjoying the present moment, savoring a sense of relaxation coupled with self-reflection.
Blessings,
Kimberly Wilson
