"if i had my life to live over, i
would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay
that way later in the fall. i would go to more
dances. i would ride more merry-go-rounds. i would
pick more daisies." – nadine stair |

cherry blossoms. daffodils. blooming trees. green
grass. fresh fruit. tank tops. peep-toe sandals. spring
has sprung. i’m fresh back from leading a retreat for a
dozen women at an old farmhouse in the catskills. it’s
always a treat to be in the midst of compassionate,
like-minded women exploring svadyaya (self-study). at
the end of our time together, the final module touched
on simple ways to create a sacred spring. i wanted to
share ideas on how you too could find a sense of
sacredness during this special season.
- try something new: bike around town. go
on a solo adventure. start a blog. listen to a
different genre of music. wear something red. listen
to a podcast.
- plant something: try bulb forcing. plant
an herb garden – try basil and mint. pot impatiens
for oodles of color until the first frost.
- get moving: garden. dance. do yoga. pull out
those roller blades. swim. run. walk.
- drink up: douse your h2o with lemon,
cucumber, or orange slices. carry a water bottle
with you to refill. add emergenc for a jolt of
vitamins. hydrate your system.
- go green: buy in season. shop the local
farmer’s market. carry your reusable bags
(bamboo/organic cotton ones en route to tranquil
space). switch to green power –
cleancurrents.com. wash in cold.
- practice ahimsa: avoid gossip. breathe.
send mindful e-mails. reduce meat consumption. be
kind to yourself. think nice thoughts as they lead
to words and actions. exude compassion.
tranquil space is also prepared to bloom fully as we

we all have those moments on our mats. when something suddenly
clicks or makes sense. something that we hadn't previously noticed or or didn't
yet fully understand. maybe a new feeling in the body when it finds a pose we've
practiced hundreds of times. or a certain phrase our teachers uses all the time
now has meaning. or a moment of enlightenment of the mind. maybe the breath
falls into a meditative dance connecting body and mind. maybe the mystery of the
bandhas reveal themselves. or maybe, just maybe, we lift that last toe off the
earth and float into headstand.
one of those moments happened to me several years ago when a teacher seemed to
sense the competitive energy emanating from within some of the us yogis— an
energy that probably also seemed to be oozing onto the mats of other yogis. she
took a moment to remind the class that yoga is not about becoming a better
person. or about becoming a more flexible yogi. or about perfecting a certain
asana. yoga, she reminded us, was a practice of the body and mind that helps us
to reveal our true selves. what is already there. some positive side affects,
she explained, may happen— more open hips or a stronger upper body or a more
peaceful mind. but our practice, she gently stated, is really just about
uncovering our true selves.
her reminder came as a relief. i didn't need to "get better." i just needed to
be on my mat. fully present. breathing. allowing my true self to be revealed.
what my teacher was referring to was atman or atma. while atman has similar
meanings and roots in several religions, there can be some secular applications
as well. noticing our obsessions and human habits. making peace with the ego.
not being attached to certain outcomes or things. knowing the difference between
needs and desires. letting go. going on the journey rather than striving for the
destination.
the journey to the center of the self can take place not only on the sacred
space of our yoga mats, but in our daily interactions with the rest of the
world. our yoga practice just makes it a little easier- and a little more fun!-
to make that journey.

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.
salamba
sirsasana (supported headstand)

kimberly has brought together a wonderful team
of yogis to teach at tranquil space. every teacher i've met has expressed a
genuine concern for my practice. i've really been able to immerse myself, which
is what i needed. in the last two months i've learned a lot from everyone in the
studio.
every teacher at tranquil space has a different energy and style. their
individuality prevents the classes from becoming predictable, and when i take
frequent classes, it does not feel like a chore. i particularly appreciate the
small touches, like readings from a text or the chime at the end of a pose.

yoga has played a sweet part in my life for
almost ten years. but three years ago it took on an even more significant role
when a boating accident left me with a spinal cord injury and unable to walk.
fortunately, surgery got me back on my feel and one of my first thoughts shortly
thereafter was "when can i do yoga again?" having started with tranquil space
back in the day when classes were held in a church on 16th street, it was a
treat to discover how much they had grown! thus, it seemed a natural progression
to find my way back to this marvelous haven. i absolutely credit my
rehabilitation and successful healing to yoga. both the mental as well as the
physical practice, coupled with a warm, accepting environment, were the best
medicine i could have taken - and continue to take.
when i learned that tranquil space was opening a studio in arlington i leaped at
the opportunity to participate in the work study program. all of the teachers,
other work study yogis and students are an absolute joy to interact with. their
spirit, camaraderie and passion for yoga are such a gift to me. and, along with
all of that important stuff, to borrow one of kimberly’s favorite words,
there’s “oodles” of fun & laughter. more wonderful medicine.
here’s to yoga & your health!!

this month, a few words of ayurvedic wisdom
from tranquil space's ayurvedic consultant, anne thiel:
ayurvedically speaking, now is the time when we move into "kapha season", the
season when the earth and water elements dominate. the snow melts and the water
binds with the earth to offer fertile soil for new growth and life. while we
transition during this time cold and heaviness to warmth and activity and we are
encouraged to open on all levels, mentally, spiritually, physically and now is a
good time for purification and renewal, for eliminating stagnation and
heaviness.
go to bed by 10 pm and rise by 5:30/6 am to support healthy agni, the
digestive fire that helps us process food. after rising, oil the body with oil
and then take a hot shower, followed by a cold rinse.
eat lesser foods that increase kapha dosha, such as dairy, iced foods or drinks,
bread, processed wheat products, heavy and processed food.
a tea of cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and tulsi tea can support the body in
its digestive efforts. generally, a light diet with fresh, local fruits and
vegetables and kichari (a dish of rice and mung beans) will benefit the body
greatly. generally, we want to favor bitter, pungent and astringent tastes (in
abundance in leafy green vegetables) and reduce the salty, sweet and sout
tastes. triphala, an herbal product, can further support the body's digestive
efforts.
your yoga practice should be dynamic and warming to stimulate the metabolic fire
and circulation; just be careful not to work so hard as to create tension in the
body which will block kapha dosha. twists, backbends, inversions and sun
salutations are wonderful practices for this time of the year. they should be
done with a smooth deep breath so that the waste materials and the heavy kapha
dosha molecules can be circulated and eliminated.

we are pleased to announce that we will be offering our yummy treatments out of
