“and the time came when the risk it took to remain in the bud was
more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

happy, happy spring! with the new
season upon us, i love taking the time to think of blossoming and growing in new
ways. i recently took a beading class (always a sucker for creative endeavors)
and loved making my own rose quartz chunky necklace. i also hit the trails with
fervor - excited to be running again. what dreams did you have brewing over the
winter months that now can be enjoyed? is deepening your practice a passion? how
about indulging in our exciting 20 yoga classes in 30 days pass?
across the country, the recent trend in yoga studios is to offer a challenge to
encourage yogis to deepen their practice. mulling over the perfectly tranquil,
yet empowering concept with my studio director, gina, and bethesda partner,
siobhan, we came up with the spring blossom adventure. practicing this
ancient art truly is an adventure! challenging ourselves to go deeper through a
consistent practice can have profound effects. we hope you’ll join us for
experience.
my personal challenge/adventure is attending a one-month teacher training
in upstate new york with sharon gannon and david life of jivamukti yoga later
this month. in addition, i’ve been indulging in weekly private sessions with a
local teacher to help my practice grow while i prepare for 15-hour days filled
with asana, philosophy, meditation, and more in a few short weeks. i’ll be sure
to share my experience in my blog,
hiptranquilchick.com/blog, so tune in.
to do some spring cleaning philosophically (always a sucker for socially
conscious business books), i recently rewrote our philosophy page to incorporate
our five studio values and raison d’etre. we’ve grown in exciting ways
over the past eight years and are always looking for new ways to serve, empower,
assist, and enlighten washingtonians. to make it easy for you to share your
suggestions, kudos, and requests, we added a "share
your thoughts" button on the homepage. do talk, we’re listening!
here is a taste of our five core values as noted on our
philosophy page:
initiative: tranquil space began in kimberly's one-bedroom apartment in
1999. with visions of strangers huddled around her fireplace, drinking tea,
doing yoga and connecting, she began hanging fliers around dupont. years later,
we continue to be innovators in our offerings of tranquility: local and
international retreats, trunk shows to highlight local female designers, karma
yoga program complete with volunteer days, yoga concierge service, newbie
offerings, pre and postnatal teacher training and classes, our very own book and
cds, voluptuous vinyasa flow for curvy bodies, and TranquiliT, kimberly’s
eco-friendly luxe lifestyle clothing line.
passion: in kimberly's living room, there was a focus on special details:
ribbons wrapped around inspirational quotes which greeted students on their mat,
aromatic scents, the blazing fire that welcomed students, and the chai served in
porcelain tea cups. these special touches continue to welcome students through
vibrant studio decor, lavender aromatherapy scents throughout the studio, an
abundance of tranquiliTea and treats available at all times, and inspiring music
to accompany one's practice.
community: over the years, moving from a living room to a parlor in a
beautiful old church on 16th street to the opening of our doors on p street in
2003, tranquil space has attracted hundreds of like-minded yogis to its
nurturing fold -- encouraging them to mingle over tea and cookies after class,
and carry the lessons they've learned in class off the yoga mat into their daily
lives. giving back to the community has been important at tranquil space since
its humble beginnings. through donations to
numerous charities,
volunteer days, picnics in the park, doga, and studio celebrations, tranquil
space has made mingling off the mat mindfully with one’s community an intricate
part of its mission.
creativity: teaching from the vinyasa yoga tradition, tranquil space
teachers have all completed the studio's comprehensive 200-hour teacher training
– dc’s first yoga alliance certified training -- and lead flowing creative
classes with a strong emphasis on the relationship between the breath, body, and
spirit. with a focus on helping students become fully aware of the present
moment, leaving to-do lists at the door, tranquil space teachers also offer
numerous enlightening events to assist students in finding a tranquil space on
and off the yoga mat.
compassion: during practice, teachers encourage students to honor exactly
where they are while also challenging their edge. this nurturing voice
encourages students to stay mindful of and recognize continual growth.
recognizing the importance of yoga as a catalyst for living a fuller life,
tranquil space launched its own non-profit in 2006, the
tranquil space foundation.
its signature program, tranquilTeens: stretch yourself, is focused on assisting
girls with finding their inner voice through yoga, creativity, and leadership.
thank you for supporting our raison d’etre over the years. please swing
by tranquil space in dupont or bethesda to sip tranquiliTea and shop our
tranquiliT boutique, indulge in our specialty spa, or roll out your mat for one
of our passionate practices.
keep igniting your adventurous spirit this spring – enjoy the daffodils, walk
among the cherry blossoms, pack a picnic and frolic in one of dc’s many parks,
practice yoga outside, take a watercolor class, journal write and sip tea at an
outside café, plant some impatiens, adopt an animal from the humane society.
tranquilly
yours,
kimberly wilson

yoga is my teacher of contentment. my practice
is in part a tribute to my late aunt, and it gives me great pleasure to remember
her in my practice as i strive to create my own dance in my yoga practice. a
poem was once written for her, as she followed her true path in the world of
dance:
merrilee smith was a friend of the dance in the atlantan world of culture and
art. her way of life was to form and enhance the uncluttered ballet of the mind
and heart.
her's was the spirit of music and movement. the ultimate beauty of the unspoken
whole erased the partial by constant improvement. her life was the balance of
body and soul.
i began my practice eight years ago seeking an exercise well-suited for my body,
something i could adhere to on a long-term basis. to my delight, i found this in
yoga, but quite unexpectedly i discovered much more. progressively, as i
returned to my yoga mat, i began to shed unwanted layer after unwanted layer
before finally arriving to acknowledge myself in its most pure, uncluttered,
natural state. from there and with each practice of discovery, i began building
positive layers of self: contentment, feelings of worthiness, beauty, joy,
recognition of strength and resilience. i remember feeling like rocky balboa
after practicing, "bring it on! i can handle anything!" the study and practice
of
vinyasa yoga has been one of the greatest gifts i have ever sought out for
myself.
yoga is my teacher of contentment. we all know life is constantly changing. who
knows what really comes next? like so many people, i find it often takes
incredible patience to be in the presence of uncertainty. for me, i seek
contentment with uncertainty by holding fast and strong to what feels right to
my soul: what sings to my heart, what strengthens my mind, what moves my spirit.
this translates into striving for a healthy mind and body aided by my practice
as well as intently striving to follow my bliss (jos. campbell): through
creating music, preparing and enjoying food, and surrounding myself with family,
friends and kindred spirits. what is your bliss?
mother teresa is quoted as saying, "you and i have been created for greater
things. we have not been created to just pass through this life without aim --
that greater aim is to live and be loved and we cannot love unless we know.
knowledge always leads to love and love to service."
i strive to guide my students toward their own paths of contentment, with
themselves and the lives they lead. it is the first step towards knowledge and
service. each day is an opportunity for us to seek and create contentment,
whilst remaining true to ourselves.
praise they that will times past, i joy to see my self now live: this age best
pleases me. ~rbt. herrick (1648)

each month we choose a pose to focus on in each class through strong attention to alignment, variations, and/or modifications as a way to grow and expand our yogic horizons.

annette
killmer
long before arriving in dc on halloween 2004,
i had picked out my dc yoga studio. from the comfort of my then-home in a small
town along california's central coast, i had searched the internet for the most
essential ingredient in easing the transition, and the promise of a 'tranquil
space' in the middle of a big unfamiliar city with winters sounded very
promising. and then there was the note about tea and cookies after yoga-class.
three of my favorite words in one sentence; that had to be a good sign! and it
was. i have been a huge fan ever since my first class at tranquil space. the
atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming, and the tranquility team so friendly,
you might think you'll get away easy in class. but no. all the
teachers i've had the pleasure to practice with so far have an astonishing
ability to guide you gently, compassionately and with good humor to an edge you
didn't even know you could reach, and teach you something new about your own
practice every time. so, what are some of the things i've discovered at tranquil
space? if your flying crow takes an unexpected nosedive, no worries; you are
clearly mastering the art of letting go. 'therapeutic discomfort' is not an
oxymoron. and never underestimate the power of the
breath - inhaling and exhaling may not solve all problems, but without it, you
are really in trouble. most of all, though, i've discovered a wonderful place to
relax, recharge and contort my body to my heart and mind's content.

yoga is more than asana, and tranquil space
is more than a yoga studio. i've practiced at many studios in many cities for
the past seven years, and i can honestly attest to the fact that tranquil space
is the one studio that really embodies it's mission to help students carry
what's learned on the mat into their lives. here, i've learned not just how to
"do" yoga, but how to "be" yoga.
i began my journey at tranquil space when it was located at the church on 16th
street. i took my first class with siobhan, and even though she made me hold
hold utkatasana for what seemed like an unbearably long time, i understood from
that moment that she was genuinely interested in my growth. along with providing
a place to nurture students' growth, the teachers at tranquil space are also the
most approachable and knowledgeable teachers i've encountered. i believe that
every student who takes class here instantly feels welcomed and encouraged.
recently, i graduated from the teacher training program and became a teaching
assistant. i thoroughly enjoy offering my knowledge of yoga to the students, as
well as watching their practice progress.
there is always something fun and funky to do at tranquil space, and i'm very
grateful for all the like-minded individuals i've met here.
peace and love, jenni
