“live fully, seek serenity, laugh often, tread mindfully, savor simplicity, love passionately, think globally, exude creativity, treasure tranquility.”
~ kimberly wilson
luxe living for the modern yogi
i created this little ditty over the holidays while deciding what to have printed on personalized gift candles. this notion of inspiration is a synopsis of what yoga means to me as a lifestyle, and i coined it the "luxe lifestyle manifesto." it has also become the signature statement for my tranquiliT clothing line, along with a constant reminder of who i want to be.
but what does luxe really mean and why would a yogi be interested in such extravagance? the dictionary defines luxe as "elegant and sumptuous." to me luxe signifies not material wealth but strong inner wealth. a feeling of empowerment, refinement, abundance, mindfulness to luxuriate in your senses think cashmere meets your most yummy yoga pose!
as we all know, yoga means union. this union is all about connection with self, others, nature, and beyond. use the onset of spring to strengthen your "luxeness" by coming out of hibernation, engaging with a city in bloom, and awakening your senses. life is meant to be luxe and it doesn't have to cost much more than observation and time. notice the daffodils peeking up out of the soil, walk along the tidal basin and savor the cherry blossoms, indulge in a bubble bath by candlelight, volunteer at the local humane society, practice yoga poses that make your heart sing (and open!), and cultivate gratitude for a world filled with possibility.
live luxe and large in april and watch the winter lulls fade away. an expansion of the luxe lifestyle manifesto is below to help energize your "luxeability"!
luxely yours,
kimberly wilson

practicing yoga has been very meaningful to me over the last several years, particularly as a medium through which to know and accept myself better, and as a result, to know and build meaningful relationships with others.
as a child, i was very "book smart" and at the same time quite the little hypochondriac. the slightest sneeze, headache, ache or pain left me wondering what was "wrong" with me, and worrying that it was the worst. i was very introverted speaking up in front of a group or in class was very challenging. i often felt shy or anxious in these and other moments.
as an adult, this hasn't exactly changed. i still get aches and pains, and i still feel anxious at various times, particularly when speaking in public. what has changed is that yoga has given me tools to understand these sensations and experiences better. i've learned that the natural reaction to stress or perceived stress is to stop breathing or to breathe very shallowly. yoga has enabled me to take deep breaths and to work through difficult moments, episodes and periods of life. i've learned that it's important to take care of one's self mentally and physically. i falter at this (overworking myself, drinking too many starbucks lattes, or not getting to the yoga mat enough), but i always return to myself resting, drinking h2o, doing asana practice, etc. the regular practice of yoga has enabled me to be more compassionate towards myself as well as mindful of my actions, towards myself and towards others.
one very meaningful journey for me "on and off the mat" has been working through lower back injury and pain. over the last couple of years, my lower back has "spasmed" or given out on more than a few occasions. reminiscent of those early childhood hypochondriac moments, i felt very disempowered and disconnected from my body when these injuries would occur. what was frustrating was how painful my back felt, that nothing in particular seemed to have provoked these injuries (i would most often be leaning down to pick up something or even, to feed my cats!), and that no one really understood or related to what was wrong with me. people would say 'be careful' or 'it will be fine,' or 'i'm sure it's nothing,' which made me feel more inept and isolated.
at first, i thought if i just worked harder and took more yoga classes, particularly advanced level classes, this would prevent future injury. this was not the case (nor the right attitude!). i had to stop myself from holding a very typical "type a" mind-over-matter mentality. i learned more about anatomy, i worked with a teacher who was able to compassionately teach me about this particular muscle in my back (quadratus lumborum or ql muscle as i now fondly say a square-shaped muscle which runs from the lower border of the rib cage to the upper border of the hip and connects all along the spine, one on each side of the low back) and how to stretch it through particular asanas. from this knowledge base, i was able to understand the tightness in my back better, know how to take care of this muscle, and from there, explore & create new asana sequences on my own, and even teach others about this muscle. i stopped being so scared when the muscle would start to weaken.
in the last couple of years, i've still loved vinyasa flow practice but i've taken several yoga 1 classes and fewer yoga 3 classes. i have modified poses or skipped poses like revolved half moon because i know they are not working for my lower back/body at that time. it took a while to feel comfortable doing that. never one to enjoy drawing attention to myself in public, i had to just get over what my neighbor was (or most likely, was not!) thinking of me as i skipped or modified these poses. i had to recognize that slowing down did not mean i was somehow lessening myself as a yogi or teacher.
as a result of tailoring my practice to meet my needs, i've grown tremendously, feel so much more in tune and healthy, and (who knew?) recently learned how to do handstand and forearm stand. i guess taking care of my back had some beginner to advanced level effects! i'm grateful to work at tranquil space and to be continually inspired by kimberly wilson. i'm grateful for all my teachers and friends at tranquil space, particularly my mentor siobhan troy. last but not least, i'm grateful to be able to share yoga practice with my fiancée tim kelley. as we dive into planning our wedding (with the simultaneous joy, stress, and commercial over stimulation that such an event brings!), i hope i'll continue to breathe and come back to the yoga mat over and over again.
may your personal yogic journey allow you to find the right path for your body, mind, and true self. namaste!

elizabeth wydra & dibora amanuel tranquil space dupont
we love tranquil space!
people may tease us about our enthusiasm for yoga at tranquil space, but we don't know how we would navigate daily life without it. the best thing about practicing yoga at tranquil space is the joy of engaging in this ancient tradition in such a warm community, led by teachers who combine compassion with exceptional technical skill. after a really stressful day at work, sometimes there is nothing better than siobhan making you work harder than you ever thought possible in monday night yoga 3 (love the gravity surfing!). the challenge and warmth of monday or tuesday night yoga (or both if you are lucky) with peg is a joyful and grounding way to welcome the week. when you are having a fabulous day, lisa's beautifully challenging yet frequently lighthearted (as we are reminded not to take ourselves too seriously) class can only make it better. and when you are getting over a heartbreak or just having a rough day, kevin's laugh and peg's graceful strength will warm your heart and gently coax back joy to your day! saturday noon yoga with kimberly, while quietly anticipating the start of a weekend of quality time with friends, is perhaps the most gratifying way to welcome the weekend.
kimberly has created a yoga studio that manages to be incredibly challenging and physically demanding yet spiritually gentle and accepting and we are so very thankful.
elizabeth started practicing at tranquil space shortly after she moved to dc and, along with another friend, introduced dibora to tranquil space now, in addition to being friends, we are also yoga buddies! we have been able to expand our physical boundaries in ways previously unimaginable, and it is always exciting to leave a class having been able to do something we couldn't do before. this willingness to experiment, to persevere in the face of difficulty and slow improvement, to play with our boundaries and challenge our limits, has inspired us on and off the mat. there is a buddhist teaching:
"do not think lightly of goodness, saying,
'nothing will help me improve.'
a pitcher is filled with water
by a steady stream of drops;
likewise, the wise person improves
and achieves well-being
a little at a time."
at tranquil space, we have both been blessed by the steady stream of kindness and wisdom of the teachers and yogis in this community. we do not think lightly of your goodness; we are grateful and glad of it. thank you, and namaste. |

i am a life-long lover of movement, and as a young girl and teenager i studied modern dance and ballet. during that time, i went to dance camp, performed at churches with my dance class, and danced around the house. as an adult at various times, i have been addicted to folk dance and creative movement. i have also taken stretch classes and done improvisational dance.
along the way, i dabbled in yoga, but it never stuck. about a year ago, i mentioned to nancy fleitel that i was a bit frustrated with my modern dance class. she highly recommended siobhan troy's yoga 1 class at glen echo. after 15 minutes, i was hooked.
i followed siobhan to bethesda when she opened tranquil space there. she has encouraged me as i learned the basics of yoga 1. i often marvel at siobhan's patience and respect her sensitive approach to giving feedback.
although i have a demanding career as a full-time researcher and part-time university instructor, i try to fit yoga into my week. yoga has made me physically stronger, and much more relaxed. it helps me focus on the important aspects of life. |

on a friend's recommendation last july, i came to tranquil space hoping that it would be the perfect once-a-week fix for my failure to stretch after running. after my first few classes, however, i was sold on more than just the stretching. as a part-time graduate student working a nearly full-time schedule, my days are often long and stressful, and weekends are not much different. yoga has provided me with the perfect outlet to release tension, but more importantly, yoga reminds me to be happy with me and has taught me to set boundaries on and off the mat. the instructors at tranquil space are truly inspiring (flexibility and otherwise!), and strike the perfect balance between challenging their students and letting them grow at their own pace.
from opening my mind to new ideas and perspectives, to helping me get through another hectic day, yoga has complemented much more than my running. now, i couldn't imagine my life without yoga or without the wonderful people at tranquil space! |
