what type of yoga is taught at tranquil space?
tranquil space's nurturing style is a beautiful blend of vinyasa hatha yoga.

do i need to register for a class?
No. tranquil space does not require pre-registration, although we encourage it for popular classes (weekday classes beginning at 6PM through 8PM and most saturday classes). yoga class attendance is on a drop-in basis. please arrive 15 minutes before the class begins to guarantee your space.

classes are too crowded! will you please limit the class sizes?
we recognize that there are several classes/class times that are extremely popular a— these are usually the "after work" classes, which are peak hours for all studios and fitness centers. we have over 55 weekly classes, and encourage you to come to a smaller class session. classes that usually average less than 40 percent capacity include the weekday noon, and 5:30 p.m. classes. sunday classes are also generally smaller. for the studio as a whole, the average class size is about 16 students, which is a fairly small size. to guarantee your space, please consider using our online system to reserve your spot.

what should i wear to class?
please wear what is comfortable and allows you to move and stretch. most people find that t-shirts and leggings work best.

all classes are done in bare feet.

what should i bring to class?
please bring a positive attitude, open heart, yoga mat, hand towel and water. sticky mats and towels are available for $1 rental fee. sticky mats, eyepillows, and hand towels are available for sale at the studio. blocks, straps, blankets and eyepillows are provided. water is no longer for sale at the studio due to the high environmental costs involved with shipping the bottles. we now provide a filtered water fountain and encourage you to bring a reusable bottle or purchase one in our boutique.

do you have a place for yogis to change clothes before and after class?
yes! we have two dressing rooms on our second floor. in our changing rooms you will find a "comfort basket" filled with lots of goodies to assist you both during and after your practice.

who is eligible for mat storage?
only tranquil space members are eligible.

do you have showers available for students to use after class?
yes! we are happy to announce we have a shower in both our men's and women's changing rooms for freshening up after your practice.

can I bring my son or daughter with me to yoga class?
tranquil space welcomes young yogis ages 13 and older to participate in yoga class with you, as long as you will be responsible for keeping your son or daughter from disturbing other students. a reminder: you may not use your class pass for your child, as passes are non-transferable. however, student discount fee rates apply for your child. we are happy to recommend a "yoga for children" program for those yogis under 13 years old. no children can be left unsupervised in the facility at any time. if your child leaves a class that is in progress, you must leave the class as well to attend to your child.

babies are invited to take part in our baby and me yoga series. options are available for non-crawlers and crawlers up to 12 months.

what times are classes offered?
visit the class schedule for a complete and updated listing of class times and levels.

how early should I arrive for class?
we recommend arriving to class 15 minutes early to ensure you have time to sign in, change clothes, and get settled before your teacher begins the class. some classes are more crowded than others. for the 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. classes especially, you may want to consider arriving even earlier to guarantee your spot. if you will be driving in, please also allow time to find parking.

how late is too late to arrive for my yoga practice?
we encourage our yogis to arrive 5-10 minutes early to class to settle from their day and prepare for their practice. we also understand that life gets busy and sometimes yogis are delayed. we are unable to allow yogis to enter the studio if this delay exceeds 15-20 minutes due to our concern for the yogi's safety and courtesy to others.

i have an injury/medical condition. can i still practice yoga at tranquil space?
usually, yes. for serious injuries and medical conditions, please consult with your doctor before beginning a yoga practice. in general, yoga can be very therapeutic. always listen to your body and make modifications if necessary. yoga should not be painful.

please alert your teacher to any specific health issues you have before class starts.

what levels of yoga do you offer?

yoga 1: a great introduction to the world of vinyasa yoga. yoga 1 is a beginners class which incorporates the fundamentals of step-back sun salutations, standing poses, hip-openers, seated poses, twists, backbends, and basic inversions. breathing exercises are explored as students begin to link movement through the postures with the inhale and exhale. yoga 1 provides a nurturing environment to help you gain flexibility, strength, balance, and relaxation. a perfect class for those new to yoga or anyone seeking a refresher on the basics of alignment and the vinyasa flow.

yoga 2: a more vigorous class where a faster pace, more intense and challenging poses, and the addition of jump-backs and jump-forwards combine to take your practice to the next level. surya namaskar (sun salutations) A and B, including chatarunga and upward-facing dog, are practiced in yoga 2. strength-building standing poses are combined in creative vinyasa sequences. deeper backbends, more complex balancing poses, and inversions are practiced. a strong foundation in the basics is encouraged.

yoga 3: the most challenging practice we offer, yoga 3 is geared toward students strong in yoga 2 who wish to push the limits of their practice with an intense class adding complex arm-balances and inversions such as headstand, handstand, and forearm stand to a vigorous vinyasa flow. regular participation in yoga 2 and a regular home practice are expected. no beginners, please.

yin/restorative yoga: the perfect yoga class that offers an escape from your week. retreat in the soothing studio by lying over blankets in poses that restore, basking in yummy yin poses that go deep into your connective tissue, and end with a soothing relaxation. a therapeutic experience.

yin/yang yoga: this class incorporates both yin yoga and yang (or active) yoga. yin yoga focuses on passive asanas with breath work and meditation to create a very deep, integrated and satisfying practice. complementary to active vinyasa, yin yoga targets the deep, dense connective tissues of the body — the tendons, ligaments and cartilage — which are difficult to energize and open. the yin postures focus on the hips, pelvis, lower back, and knees, helping the body remain supple at its core. the yin portion of the class is followed by a more active yang portion. suitable for anyone interested in taking his or her practice to a renewed level of awareness and stillness, both inside and out. appropriate for all levels.

what is the difference between yin yoga and restorative yoga?
restorative yoga emphasizes restful poses in which the body is supported with props to promote a calm, peaceful state of mind, body, and spirit. restorative yoga is a great way to achieve deep relaxation to help bring balance to our demanding daily lives. yin yoga features seated and reclining poses, passively held for 3-5 minutes and focuses on releasing deep connective tissue. suitable for all levels, this class uses props where necessary.
